Day 1a In the Books: William John Leads; Kornuth and Baldwin Big Stacks

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
William John - Chip Leader
William John - Chip Leader

Well today was one of the most exciting days on the poker calendar, as the biggest poker tournament in the world kicked off at Day 1a of the 2012 Main Event! 1066 players stormed the Rio this morning with $10,000 and a dream, and after five action packed levels. William John is looking down at everyone else, as he sits on a whopping 266,700 chips, which covers the rest of the field by 100,000. Trailing John are Gerardo Lubas (165,800), Daniel Strelitz (164,125), Dane Lomas (157,600), and Chance Kornuth (141,775), who round out the top five.

Plenty of famous faces were here at the Rio today, including our defending champion Pius Heinz. Heinz spent most of his day on the main stage in the mothership, and he grinded a shortish stack for much of the day. However, Heinz found a key double up in the last level and his stack grew to 39,275 by the end of the night.

We were also surprised to see the one, the only, Phil Hellmuth, who unlike in past years, made a quiet, subdued entrance to this event. Hellmuth originally had registered for Day 1C of this event, but tweeted that after getting 14.5 hours of sleep, he was ready to play the day. Unfortunately for Hellmuth, it might not have been his best decision, as he was eliminated in the last level of the night when his top pair ran into the bottom set of Michael Tureniec.

While Hellmuth won’t be coming back for Day 2, there are a ton of notable names that still have a shot at the dream of the Main Event Final Table. That list of names includes Eric Baldwin (123,150), Faraz Jaka (115,775), Filippo Candio (85,000), JJ Liu (78,800), Mike Sexton (15,200), and David Williams (9,100).

Of course, not everyone could make it to the end of the day. We lost a handful of famous faces, including Ray Romano, Greg “FBT” Mueller, Allen Bari, Kathy Liebert, Eric Froehlich, Matt Glantz, Lee Markholt,Frank Kassela, Pokernews Hostess Kristy Arnett, former main event final table finishers Raymond Rahme and Soi Nguyen, and three former Main Event Champions: 1993 Champ Jim Bechtel, 2005 Champ Joe Hachem, and the aforementioned Hellmuth.

The players who have advanced to make it to Day 2 will now have two days off before they return on Tuesday at noon to play five more levels. Tomorrow will be Day 1b, where we will see a fresh batch of players try to match the accomplishment of today’s survivors. Play for Day 1b will start at noon tomorrow, so we hope that you come back to Pokernews to check out all the action. Until then, good night from the desert!

No Day 2 For Kristy Arnett

Kristy Arnett
Kristy Arnett

PokerNews hostess Kristy Arnett has just been eliminated from the World Series of Poker Main Event with just 30 minutes of play left on Day 1a.

The flop read {10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Clubs} and Arnett shoved all in over the 4,000-chip raise from the player to her right. While he was tanking she told us the following.

The player to her right had limped under the gun, and Arnett raised it up to 1,400. The other players folded and the limper, Moacyr Arnaldo Farah, called. On the flop, Farah checked and Arnett fired out 1,600. At this point Farah made it 4,000 and Arnett moved all in for around 12,000 chips. Arnett's opponent paused before making the call.

Moacyr Arnaldo Farah{Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

The turn was the {2-Clubs}, and the river the {8-Spades}, knocking out Arnett. Hopes and dreams were shattered this year for Arnett, but our guess is we'll be seeing her back in action next year.

Heinz Holds

Over at the ESPN featured table sits last year's Main Event champ, Pius Heinz. We don't know exactly how the action went, but the flop read {A-Spades}{5-Spades}{3-Spades} and Heinz moved all in for 7,775. Action moved over to Heinz's opponent who took about a minute deciding his course of action. In the end he opted to call and threw out the right amount of chips to put Heinz at risk. Cards were then tabled and it was Heinz who was ahead.

Heinz: {J-Spades}{4-Spades}
Opponent: {8-Spades}{7-Spades}

Both players had flopped flushes, but it was Heinz's that was superior. A {7-Hearts} on the turn, and a {8-Diamonds} on the river sealed the deal and Heinz doubled up to around 27,500.

Hellmuth's Series Over

Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

The under the gun player raised it up to 900. Michael Tureniec in middle position made the call, as did Phil Hellmuth.

The flop came {A-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} prompting a check from the under-the-gun player, and a bet of 1,650 from Tureniec. Next it was on Hellmuth who announced "4,000" and threw out the raise. The under-the-gun player folded and Tureniec went all in, a bet that would put the short-stacked Hellmuth all in. Hellmuth called all in for his few remaining chips, and was in for a sore sight.

Tureniec: {3-Spades}{3-Hearts}
Hellmuth: {A-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

The turn brought the {2-Hearts}, prompting Hellmuth to stand up and begin his walk out the door, mumbling how Tureniec wins every hand. A meaningless {7-Diamonds} landed on the river and Hellmuth was halfway to the closest door dropping a few choice profanities at nothing in particular.

This ends Hellmuth's 2012 World Series of Poker. The poker brat has had a fairly successful showing this year; boasting 6 cashes, 3 final tables, 1 bracelet, and $2,985,840 in WSOP winnings. Despite this amazing outing at the WSOP, being knocked out of the main event has to be an extremely tough beat to handle for any talented poker pro.

Randall Routs Rahme

Raymond Rahme- Early Casualty
Raymond Rahme- Early Casualty

Our first player over 100,000 is David Randall. We just caught him scoop a big pot where he busted Raymond Rahme, who finished 3rd in the 2007 Main Event.

There was already 4,500 in the middle when we arrived to see the dealer fan out a flop of {9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{8-Hearts}. Rahme checked to Randall, who fired out 3,200. Rahme thought for about 15 seconds before tossing out three orange T,5000 chips, a raise to 15,000 total. It was back to Randall, and he grabbed his stack of oranges and dropped it into the middle, moving Rahme all in. He quickly made the call, and asked Randall if he had the eight. Randall shook his head, because he had something better.

Randall: {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}
Rahme: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}

Randall had flopped a monster, and Rahme would need a miracle to catch back up. The turn brought the {10-Diamonds}, and the river came the {3-Clubs}. Rahme shook his head as he left the table, while Randall added to his already impressive stack. He is now easily the biggest stack in the room, sitting on a whopping 135,000.

Quads on Board For Pasalic

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Tatjana Pasalic
Tatjana Pasalic

We just caught an interesting hand involving Tatjana Pasalic. Pasalic started by raising to 550 in the small blind. The big blind called, and the two were clearly having fun chatting it up. The flop came down {q-Spades}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts}, and both players checked. The turn came the {6-Clubs}, and again, they both checked. The river brought the case six, the {6-Diamonds}, bringing quads on board.

The whole table was laughing at the final board, and Pasalic bet out 500. Her opponent straight up told her "Don't call" and toss out an orange T5,000 chip. Since it was just the one chip, it should have been deemed just a call, but no one at the table, dealer included, said anything, so it was considered a raise. Pasalic folded her hand, and her opponent flashed the {a-Clubs} for "the nuts".

It should also be noted that Pasalic is wearing a rather interesting leopard suit today. She lost a last longer with her boyfriend, poker pro McLean Karr, though there is a bit of controversy with the bet. The event in question was a re entry event, but Pasalic was not aware of this. Karr was, and outlasted her after re-entering. She's been a good sport about it, as she showed up in the outfit. Meanwhile, Karr is showing his support by rocking out in cat shoes today.

Lynn Gilmartin spoke with Pasalic during a break:

For the next several days, dreams will be made and shattered as we move towards crowning another WSOP champion. Last year, Pius Heinz fulfilled the ultimate poker dream to become the 42nd WSOP Main Event champion. He defeated a field of 6,865 runners to earn the $8,715,368 top prize and will forever be remembered in the poker history books.

Another 6,000-7,000 entrants are expected in attendance to create the most sought after prize pool in all of the land. Today's Day 1a is the first of three starting flights, which is one less than in recent previous years. Still, the expectations are set extremely high for the most prestigious tournament title in the world.

Play today is scheduled for five 120-minute levels. Each player will begin with 30,000 in starting chips and a 20-minute break will occur after every level. After the third level of the day, the players will be sent on a 90-minute dinner break. If everything runs according to schedule, play should end at approximately 12:30 AM tonight.

The festivities are upon us and the Main Event is scheduled to get underway shortly. Stay tuned to PokerNews for all of the live coverage straight to you from the tournament floor. You won't want to miss it!
