Froehlich Leads After Day 2

Level 17 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Eric Froehlich - Day 2 Chip Leader
Eric Froehlich - Day 2 Chip Leader

After 10 more levels of play in Event #10: $1,500 Limit Hold'em, the field is down to 19 players, and your end-of-day chip leader is two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Eric Froehlich. Froehlich bagged 319,000 chips, and his closest competitors are Mark Mierkalns (266,000), Morgan Newman (242,000), and Aaron Ogus (233,000).

The day began with 177 players, and several notable players quickly hit the exits. On one of the first hands of the day, Phil Ivey was knocked out by the aforementioned Ogus. Ogus made a pair of fours, which bested the nine-time WSOP bracelet winner's jack-high. Ivey's friend and fellow multiple gold bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu also fell before the first break of the day. He found himself all in with ace-king, made top pair, but unfortunately an opponent turned two pair to eliminate him.

Other notables who fell short of the money include David "ODB" Baker, Bryan Devonshire, and Tobias Peters.

The bubble finally burst at the end of Level 13, when Andrew Leshovsky was forced to go all in from the small blind with just 800 chips. An opponent made trip queens against his ten-high, and sent him to the rail empty handed.

Once the players were in the money, we lost a gaggle of players, including Matt Hawrilenko, Sam Barnhart, Tom Schneider, Nick Schulman, David Goldberg, Michael Moore, Kevin MacPhee, Larry Wright, Hoyt Corkins, Lee Goldman, and Alex Dovzhenko.

En route to grabbing the chip lead, Froehlich eliminated Mike Sowers in 29th place. The two got it in on the turn of a {q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} board, and Froehlich opened up {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} for a straight flush. Sowers was drawing dead with {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}, and hit the rail.

After the redraw, Froehlich made another timely flush - this one against Thomas Blizniak. With the chip lead and the experience, Froehlich is certainly one of the favorites to bring home the gold, but there are several tough players remaining.

Jeff Shulman is looking to replicate what his father and mother have accomplished by bringing home a gold bracelet. He will be in tough shape with just 23,000, however, and will need to spin it up early on Day 3.

Play will begin tomorrow at 2 p.m. local time. We hope you join us then.

Jeff Shulman picks up a big one

Thomas Blizniak raised in early position, Stuart McHenry called on his left, and Jeff Shulman called on the button. The flop produced the {q-Spades}{2-Hearts}{4-Spades}, Blizniak checked, McHenry bet, and Shulman raised. Only McHenry called.

McHenry then check-called bets on the turn ({5-Hearts}) and the river ({2-Spades}), only to muck when Shulman showed {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts} for a pair of queens.

Froehlich Turns a Straight Flush; Busts Sowers

Level 17 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Eric Froehlich
Eric Froehlich

Eric Froehlich raised from under the gun, Mike Sowers made it two bets on his direct left, and Amos Segev cold-called on the button. Froehlich called as well, and the flop came {q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. Froehlich led out, Sowers raised, Segev folded, and Froehlich called.

The rest of the money went in when the {9-Diamonds} turned, and the hands were opened:

Froehlich: {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Sowers: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

Froehlich turned a straight flush, leaving Sowers drawing dead. The {a-Clubs} completed the board, and Sowers was eliminated in 29th place.

Froehlich now has 120,000 chips.

Kevin McPhee Eliminated

On a flop of {7-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{a-Clubs} a player bet and Kevin MacPhee made the call.

The turn was the {7-Diamonds} and the player bet again. This time MacPhee raised and he was called.

The river was the {A-Hearts} and the player first to act checked. MacPhee moved all in, and he was called by the man who turned up {A-Spades}{5-Diamonds} for a full house. MacPhee tossed his cards into the muck exposing his {6-}{7-}.

Sam Barnhart Gone in 64th ($2,455)

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 0 ante
Sam Barnhart
Sam Barnhart

In February 2011 Sam Barnhart came out of nowhere to win the Harrah’s Tunica, Robinsonville WSOP Circuit Event ($148,612) which gave him automatic entrance to the National Championship in May of that year. He won that one too ($300,000) and used part of that money to buy-in to the 2011 WSOP Main Event. He finished 17th in that one for another $378,796.

Since then he's cashed in a lot of smaller events and today he added another cash to that already impressive list. He made it in to the money but just busted in a three way hand. His {A-Hearts}{4-Hearts} couldn't compete with the {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} of one of his opponents on {3-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{3-Clubs} | {3-Hearts} | {2-Diamonds}. Exit for Sam Barnhart, we'll see him in another one.

Klimczak KO'd

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 0 ante
Faith Klimczak
Faith Klimczak

We missed the betting action between Faith Klimczak and Brian Nichols on a flop of {a-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, but when the {8-Hearts} turned, the rest of her chips went in the middle.

Klimczak: {a-Spades}{j-Spades}
Nichols: {j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

Klimczak was in great shape to double, until the {q-Spades} spiked on the river, giving Nichols a straight. Klimczak was suddenly eliminated from the tournament, and off to the cage to collect her winnings.

Nichols now sits with 45,000 chips.

Barnburner

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 0 ante
Sam Barnhart
Sam Barnhart

There was a raise in early position, Matt Hawrilenko three-bet in middle position, and Sam Barnhart four-bet near the button. The early position raiser tanked for a bit before calling, and Hawrilenko called as well.

The flop came {a-Clubs}{8-Spades}{q-Clubs}, and the action checked to Barnhart who bet. The early position player called all in for 500, Hawrilenko called, and the turn brought the {2-Diamonds}. Hawrilenko check-folded to a bet.

Barnhart showed {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} for a set of aces.

"I'm drawing dead," the player said, keeping his cards hidden.

The dealer shrugged, them delivered the river card - the {a-Diamonds}. The entire table erupted with laughter, even the player who was eliminated, and Barnhart was shipped the pot.

Daniel Negreanu Busts

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu checked in late last night, and departed early today. In his last hand he was allin before the flop with three opponents. He held {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} which looked pretty solid on {7-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{J-Clubs} but when the {8-Diamonds} hit the turn he could feel he was in trouble. The initial-raiser from under-the-gun was now involved in a war for the side-pot with the big blind and that came to a final on the {2-Clubs} on the river. The big blind bet out one last time and the under-the-gun plus one player made the call.

The big blind showed his {J-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a turned two pair which bested Negreanu's ace-king and the under-the-gun plus one's {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}. Negreanu was heading for the exit, but he might just jump in another tournament today because he still looked hungry for bracelets.

Gabriel Nassif Busted

Gabriel Nassif
Gabriel Nassif

Gabriel Nassif didn't start out with to many chips today, and couldn't turn it around. Nassif was very short already and commited his last chips on a {3-Hearts}{10-Spades}{7-Clubs} flop. We arrived on the flop but imagine quite some chips went in before that happened. {3-Hearts}{10-Spades}{7-Clubs} and Nassif turned over his {J-Spades}{J-Hearts} when the last chips had gone in. His opponent tabled {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} and the {A-Spades} hit the turn directly after. The {2-Hearts} on the river couldn't save Nassif who exited the tournament area.

"I'm Not Folding River"

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 0 ante
Phil Ivey (Event #8) - Eliminated
Phil Ivey (Event #8) - Eliminated

When we arrived at the table, Phil Ivey led out for a bet on a flop of {7-Spades}{5-Hearts}{8-Hearts}. Aaron Ogus called.

The turn was the {4-Diamonds}, Ivey fired out another bet, leaving roughly a third of a big bet behind, and Ogus just called. Ivey shot him a look.

"I'm not folding river," Ogus joked.

Before the {q-Diamonds} completed the board, Ivey moved all in. Ogus called.

"Boom," Ivey said, tabling {j-Spades}{9-Spades}. "Cya."

Ogus showed {4-Spades}{3-Spades} for a pair of threes.

Ivey abruptly left the table, while the pot was pushed to Ogus. Ogus then stopped the action to take a picture of the board, even though some players objected because they wanted the game to keep moving.

"It's a Phil Ivey knockout," Ogus shot at the player. "It'll take 10 ***damn seconds."
