Daniel Idema Wins Event #39: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low 8-or-Better ($184,590)

Level 28 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante

Seventeen players, out of the 558 who entered, emerged from Day 2 of Event #39, and Daniel Idema has outlasted the other 16 runners to claim the World Series of Poker gold bracelet and $184,590 in prize money. He finished off runner-up Joseph Hertzog after about 90 minutes of heads-up play (and a few shots) on the 301st hand of the final table. Idema had been down as low as four big bets in heads-up play.

A couple of notable names fell early in the day: Kristy Gazes in 17th and Layne Flack in 15th. The elimination of Poker Hall of Famer Linda Johnson in ninth set up the official final table.

There, four-time bracelet winner Artie Cobb, who won all of his titles in stud variants, was the first to hit the rail when Hertzog made a wheel. Well-known pros Mike Leah (fifth place) and Matt Vengrin (fourth place) fell a few hours later, and three-handed play commenced.

Once there, Raul Paez held more than half of the chips in play at one time, but Hertzog showed him a bluff on one of the most memorable hands of the tournament. Paez never seemed to recover, dropping out in third a bit later.

Idema claimed his second bracelet. His first win came in the $10,000 Limit Hold'em Championship in 2011, when he claimed a $378,642 first prize.

Hand #301:

Daniel Idema: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}/{2-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Joseph Hertzog: {2-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}/{8-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{q-}{x-}

Joseph Hertzog completed, and Daniel Idema called. Hertzog fired again on fourth, and Idema raised. Hertzog reraised, and the two got it all in. Idema was way ahead with kings in the hole, and Hertzog didn't catch anything on fifth and sixth.

"He's dead, he's dead to the case king," Greg Mueller called out.

Hertzog flipped over a meaningless {4-}, and he was the runner-up.

Hand #296:

Joseph Hertzog: {x-}{x-} / {3-Spades}{5-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{8-Hearts} / {x-}
Daniel Idema: {x-}{x-} / {3-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{10-Spades} / {x-}

Idema brought it in then called when Hertzog completed. Both players checked on fourth street, and Idema check-called bets on fifth, sixth, and seventh. Idema turned over {a-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} for a seventy-six low.

"It's good," Hertzog sighed. "Ace-high is good."

He showed {q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{7-Spades}, and mucked it.

"Why did you bet?" Idema asked, seriously.

Hertzog gave him no anser.

Daniel Idema: {x-}{x-} / {j-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{5-Spades} / {x-}

Idema brought it in, then called when Hertzog completed. Hertzog bet out on every street, including seventh where he bet blind, and Idema called him down.

When Idema called on seventh, Hertzog turned over his first two cards ({a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}), then ripped over his seventh card, the {7-Hearts}. Idema mucked his hand, and Hertzog dragged in a massive pot, regaining the lead.

"You got me," Hertzog said, laughing.

He called, then folded to a bet on seventh, showing {10-Spades}{8-Spades}{3-Clubs}.

"Too many outs," Hertzog chuckled.

Idema showed {a-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} for aces up.

Raul Paez: {x-}{x-} / {6-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{2-Spades} / {x-}

Paez brought it in, Idema completed, and Paez called. Idema led out on every street, Paez called him down, and the Spaniard angrily threw his cards into the muck when Idema showed {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for aces-up.

Hand #208:

Paez was left with 160,000 after Hand #206, and the money went in on third street two hands later against Joseph Hertzog.

Hertzog: ({4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}) / {8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} / {x-}
Paez: ({j-Diamonds}{3-Spades}) / {2-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} / {x-}

Hertzog ripped over the {4-Hearts} on seventh, making eights and fours, and Paez shoed the {6-Spades} for king-high.

Daniel Idema: {x-}{x-} / {6-Diamonds}{j-Spades} (FOLD)
Raul Paez: {x-}{x-} / {j-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{3-Clubs} / {x-}

Hertzog brought it in, Idema completed, and Paez raised. Both Hertzog and Idema called. Paez led out on fourth, Hertzog instantly raised, and only Paez called. As soon as the {7-Diamonds} dropped in front of Hertzog, he fired out a bet. He bet quickly again on sixth, then bet dark on seventh. Paez called

Hertzog flipped over {4-Clubs}{6-Hearts} for sevens and fours with an open-ended straight draw. He then ripped over the {8-Diamonds}, giving him a straight and an eighty-seven low.

Paez could only shake his head as he showed {j-Hearts}{10-Spades} and angrily mucked his seventh card face down.

"What?" Hertzog said after the hand, continuing to needle Paez. "I didn't have cheese. Swiss cheese. I had cheddar!"

Mike Leah Eliminated in 5th Place ($37,552)

Level 25 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Mike Leah - 5th Place
Mike Leah - 5th Place

Hand #126:

Raul Paez: {x-}{x-}/{3-Clubs}{5-Spades}{j-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Mike Leah: {x-}{x-}/{6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Matt Vengrin: {x-}{x-}/{10-Clubs}{3-}

Paez completed, Vengrin raised and Leah cold-called. Paez made the call as well. Leah took the lead when he picked up a second low diamond, and Paez was the only caller. He kept the lead on fifth, but Paez bet sixth when he got his third wheel card. Paez bet the end as well, and Leah went into the tank.

"I'm gonna need a few minutes here, guys," he said, seeming anguished. "You have to have a wheel," he muttered to himself shortly thereafter.

Finally, he slammed in a call. Leah was right about the wheel, and Paez even had a six-high straight to go with it, showing {2-Spades}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs}.

Hand #128:

Matt Vengrin completed with the {6-Clubs}, Leah raised with the {10-Spades}, and Vengrin re-raised to 66,000, putting Leah all in. He called, and the boards ran out like this:

Leah: ({10-Clubs}{4-Hearts} / {10-Spades}{a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Vengrin: ({6-Hearts}{3-Hearts} / {6-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{6-Spades}{a-Spades}

Vengrin turned over the {j-Diamonds} for a full house, leaving Leah drawing dead. He turned over the {7-Clubs} on seventh, giving him a flush for kicks and giggles.

The Canadian will walk away with $37,552 for his efforts.
