Just 14 Players Stand Between Phil Hellmuth and Bracelet No. 14

Level 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

On Thursday, the 2014 World Series of Poker Event #15: $3,000 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em began with 810 players, of which 144 returned for Day 2 action earlier today. After ten one-hour levels of play, just 15 players remain with Heinz Kamutzki best positioned to make a run at the $508,640 first-place prize with his stack of 841,000.

Another man eyeing up the title is Phil Hellmuth, who was denied his 14th bracelet when he finished runner-up to Ted Forrest in Event #7: $1,500 Seven-Card Razz. Hellmuth is the biggest name in the field and will take 491,000 into the final day of play.

Others who will be there include Davidi Kitai (815,000), Pratyush Buddiga (760,000), Gordon Vayo (483,000), Ryan Olisar (444,000), Vladimir Geshkenbein (178,000), and Tony Ruberto (98,000).

The day kicked off with 54 players needing to hit the rail before the money was reached, and one of the first to go was 2010 WSOP Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel, who ran pockets tens into the kings of Matt Marafioti. Before long the Canadian had company on the rail including Blair Hinkle, Dani Stern, Eric Baldwin, Peter Jetten, and Adam Bernstein.

Bernstein was actually the victim of a cooler to burst the bubble, which happened in Level 12 (600/1,200/200). It happened when Bernstein limped under the gun and action folded to Artem Metalidi in the big blind. He raised to 3,600, and Bernstein simply moved all in for 58,600. Metalidi snap-called.

Metalidi: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}
Bernstein: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}

It was a cooler hand, and Bernstein was on the bad end of things. With a minimum payday of $5,041 on the line the dealer ran out the board — {10-Spades}{3-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{a-Clubs}. There would be no miracle for Bernstein and he became the bubble boy in particularly brutal fashion.

From there the in-the-money finishes came at a rapid pace and included Joe Tehan (89th - $5,041), Michael Mizrachi (86th - $5,041), Tony Dunst (75th - $5,484), Sorel Mizzi (68th - $5,484), Jesse Sylvia (63rd - $5,970), Andrew Lichtenberger (52nd - $7,098), Paul Volpe (47th - $7,938), Bryn Kenney (41st - $9,066), and Brandon Cantu (32nd - $10,614).

Cantu, who began the day as a big chip leader, fell when he opened for 12,000 from the button only to have Hellmuth, who he battled against at aforementioned razz final table earlier in the week, three-bet to 25,000 from the big blind.

Cantu responded by four-betting all in and Hellmuth snap-called.

Cantu: {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Hellmuth: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

Cantu had picked the wrong time to shove as the "Poker Brat" had the best hand in poker. Cantu, who began the day as a big chip leader, wouldn't get so much as a sweat as the board ran out {7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. With that, Hellmuth, who notched his 102nd WSOP cash in this event, eliminated his “frenemy.”

Day 3 action will see the remaining 15 players return at 1 p.m. on Saturday to play down to a winner. Of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to bring you all the updates. Be sure to check back then, but in the meantime check out this video where Hollywood actor James Woods talks about his start in poker:

Matt Marafioti Eliminated in 17th Place ($19,574)

Level 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Matt Marafioti - 17th Place
Matt Marafioti - 17th Place

Matt Marafioti moved all in under the gun for his last 135,000 and Gabriel Andrade called from the small blind.

Marafioti: {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Andrade: {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

Marafioti was drawing to two live cards, but the {q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{9-Clubs} flop paired Andrade's queen. That said, it also gave Marafioti a gutshot straight draw. The {9-Spades} turn was close to the ten he needed, but not quite close enough. The same can be said of the {9-Hearts} river.

"Good luck everyone," Marafioti offered before taking his leave in 17th place.

The Last Woman in the Field Falls in 19th Place

Level 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Jackie Glazier
Jackie Glazier

Australian Jackie Glazier had been nursing a short stack for the last hour or so, but her number was finally called and it was 19, as in 19th place.

In what would be her final hand, Glazier moved all in for her last 40,000 and received a call. When action reached John Andress, he three-bet to 120,000 and isolated Glazier. Andress tabled {a-}{k-}, which was well out in front of Glazier's {a-}{6-}.

The board ran out clean, and the WSOP bracelet winner had to settle for 19th place and $15,567 in prize money. The field is now down to the final 18 players, and that means it is time for a complete redraw.

Busquet Busted in 20th Place

Level 20 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Olivier Busquet
Olivier Busquet

Just before the level went up, Ryan Olisar raised to 12,000 from the button and was met by a three-bet to 30,000 from Olivier Busquet in the big blind. Olisar responded by moved all in and Busquet called off for right around 235,000.

Olisar: {k-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Busuqet: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

It appeared as if Olisar had picked a bad spot to shove, but then lightning struck when the flop fell {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{k-Spades} to give him the lead with a pair of kings. Busuqet had gotten unlucky, and he watched helplessly as the {J-Spades} blanked on the turn followed by the {2-Hearts} on the river.

Busquet exits in 20th place, which means the field is just one elimination away from the three-table redraw.

David Chase

Just before the break, David Chase moved all in for 95,500 from the small blind and Jake Toole called from the big.

Chase: {a-Spades}{5-Spades}
Toole: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}

Chase liked his ace enough to go with it, but he was a bit unlucky Toole woke up with a pocket pair. The eights ended up holding too after the board ran out {6-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}. Chase takes home $12,714 for his 25th-place finish.

Hellmuth Sends Cantu Packing

Level 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Brandon Cantu
Brandon Cantu

After losing a few pots and dropping down to near 200K, Brandon Cantu opened for 12,000 from the button only to have Phil Hellmuth, who he battled against at the Event #7: $1,500 Razz final table earlier in the week, three-bet to 25,000 from the big blind.

Cantu responded by four-betting all in and Hellmuth snap-called.

Cantu: {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Hellmuth: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

Korik Continues to Roll; Sends Guagenti to the Rail

Level 16 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Nick Guagenti
Nick Guagenti

Zachary Kurik has been on fire ever since he doubled through Artem Metalidi. First he spiked the river to eliminate David Diaz, and now he's sent Nick Guagenti to the rail.

We missed the action, but Barry Hutter was kind enough to fill us in on some details. He said it began when Kurik raised from the small blind and Guagenti defended from the big. The {q-}{5-}{3-} flop, which contained two hearts, saw action go bet-call, and then Korik checked the {6-Hearts} turn. Guagenti bet 13,100, Korik check-raised to 30,000, and Guagenti called.

When a {5-} completed the board on the river, Korik returned to checking and Guagenti moved all in for roughly 95,000. Kurik called with {k-Hearts}{5-} for rivered trips, which bested Guagenti's {6-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} two pair.

Meanwhile, Paul Volpe has also been eliminated from the tournament.

In Need of a Medic

Level 13 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Nenad Medic
Nenad Medic

A short-stacked Nenad Medic moved all in preflop for his last 19,400 and Bryn Kenney called him from the button. The blinds both folded and the cards were flipped on their backs.

Medic: {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Kenney: {k-Clubs}{j-Spades}

Medic was ahead, but Kenney was drawing to two live cars. The {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop paired Medic's ten, but it didn't change much as he still needed to dodge paint. That didn't happen though as the dealer burned and turned the {J-Diamonds}. Kenney paired his jack to take a hammerlock on the hand.

The {8-Diamonds} river bore no consequence on the hand, and Medic was sent to the payout desk.

Duhamel One of the First to Go

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Jonathan Duhamel
Jonathan Duhamel

As expected, the eliminations are coming quickly. One of the first to go was 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel.

It happened when Chris Hunichen opened with a raise and Matt Marafioti three-bet to 6,900. Duhamel then four-bet jammed from the big blind, Hunichen folded, and Marafioti snap-called.

Duhamel flipped over {10-}{10-}, but it was dominated by the {k-}{k-} of Marafioti. The board ran out clean, and Duhamel's Day 2 came to an end here in the opening minutes.
