Day 1a of the 2018 WSOP Main Event is in the Books: Truyen Nguyen the Top Stack; Blumstein Busts

Level 5 : 250/500, 75 ante
Truyen Nguyen
Truyen Nguyen

The first of three starting days of the 2018 World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event is in the books and a total of 925 players took part in the biggest and most important poker tournament of the year at the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino.

After five levels of two hours each, only 659 hopefuls advanced and Truyen Nguyen leads before the UK's Chris Fraser for the top spot.

Nguyen, who works in the IT business, used to play online poker before Black Friday and shared a table with 2017 WSOP Main Event 9th place finisher Ben Lamb. In the last level of the night, Lamb was very active at the table, escaping elimination by Nguyen once when they chopped it up when a straight ran out on the board. However, Nguyen then got there a few hands later with a flush draw against the set of Lamb and the top pair of a third player, to bag up massive 324,800. Fraser follows not far behind with an equally impressive 316,100.

Some other big stacks and notables that can now enjoy two days off before returning to the action on Thursday, July 5, are Frank Crivello (215,000), Kevin "Phwap" Boudreau (186,300), Nick Jivkov (186,000), Matt Berkey (185,600), Alexandru Papazian (147,100), Gordon Vayo (87,100), the former Main Event champions Joe Hachem (84,700), Scotty Nguyen (84,400) and Joe McKeehen (36,200), as well as Erik Seidel (72,100).

The early spotlight was on defending champion Scott Blumstein and the 2017 champion was moved to the ESPN feature tables after the dinner break. However, his title defense came to a very early end after he called a three-bet by Brian Yoon and check-called bets by Yoon all the way with pocket tens on a six-high board. Running spades gave Yoon the nut flush with ace-jack suited and Blumstein couldn't get away from it to bow out on level three. Yoon went on to bag up 145,000 at the end of the night.

Other former Main Event champions that failed to advance included Qui Nguyen and Jerry Yang. Notables such as Brian Rast, Christopher Andler, Felipe Ramos, Stephen Chidwick, Chance Kornuth, former football star Richard Seymour and Jonathan Little all hit the rail also.

It wasn't just about the superstars of the poker scene though at the tables on Day 1a, as poker commentator David Tuchman (111,000), actor Kevin Pollak (71,300), and the well-known comedian Ray Romano (61,100) all bagged up along with plenty of first-timers and poker enthusiasts from all over the world. One arrival, in particular, caused quite some attention, as American film and television producer Randall Emmett entered the tournament with a band of musicians and girls in exotic costumes. Emmett bagged up an above-average 133,400 and will be among those to return for Day 2 and fight for poker's most elusive title of the year.

While Day 1a is in the books, the second starting day is just one night's sleep away and kicks off at 11am local time on July 3. The PokerNews live reporting team will be back on the floor to provide coverage of all the action.

Seidel On the Rise Again

Level 5 : 250/500, 75 ante
Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

Erik Seidel lost a big set-over-set pot earlier against Diego Martinez, but he's chipping up nicely again and starting to head back to where he started before that pot.

In the latest pot, there was a {4-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{6-Spades} flop and Seidel called a 3,500-bet from the player in the big blind. The turn was the {9-Diamonds} and Seidel called another bet. This time the bet was 5,500.

His opponent checked to him on the {Q-Diamonds} river and Seidel put out a bet of 15,000. He was called and Seidel opened up {6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for a flush. His opponent mucked and Seidel's rail started celebrating the victory.

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Richard Seymour
Richard Seymour

Wolfram Liebold opened to 1,200 from the hijack. Richard Seymour, in the small blind, called, along with the big blind.

A flop reading {k-Spades}{9-Hearts}{3-Hearts} was dealt. Seymour and the player in the big blind checked. Liebold led for 2,600. Seymour check-raised all in for around 14,000. The big blind folded. Liebold quickly called.

Richard Seymour: {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Wolfram Liebold: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

The {7-Spades} turn and {a-Clubs} river completed the board and Liebold raked in the pot, eliminating Seymour.

Fraser Eliminates Rast Flush Over Flush

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Brian Rast and Chris Fraser
Brian Rast and Chris Fraser

Chris Fraser just won a monster pot and eliminated Brian Rast in the process and Fraser filled us in on what transpired. Brian Rast raised to 1,000 from the button and Fraser reraised to 3,200 from the button.

Rast called and they went heads-up to a flop that was all low cards with two hearts. Fraser led out with a bet, Rast called, and the dealer put a third heart on the turn.

Fraser checked, Rast bet 6,000, and Fraser check-raised to 15,000. With the action back on Rast, he made at it 30,000 and Fraser moved all in, covering Rast who had about 40,000 behind. Rast called, turning over his {k-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for the second-nut flush, but Fraser had turned the nut flush with {a-Hearts}{7-Hearts}.

Rast was sent to the rail and Fraser vaulted to the top of the chip counts.

Van Sanford Makes a Huge Call on the River

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Ryan Van Sanford
Ryan Van Sanford

The board read {9-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} at the turn and Ryan Van Sanford checked to Kilian Loeffler who bet 10,000 into a pot of about 50,000. Van Sanford made the call and the river fell the {2-Hearts}.

Van Sanford checked again. Loeffler moved all in for almost 30,000 — enough to cover Van Sanford. After several minutes of thought, Van Sanford made the call for his remaining 28,375 and showed {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} for kings over twos.

His opponent said, "Nice call," as he mucked {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} face up, and Van Sanford took down the pot, leaving his opponent with crumbs.

Fraser Busts Andler Set Over Set

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Chris Fraser
Chris Fraser

The action started with a raise to 750 by Brian Rast and Chris Fraser from one seat over bumped it up to 2,100. Christopher Andler called on the button and Rast also came along to see a flop of {J-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}. Rast checked and Fraser bet 5,000. Andler raised it up to 15,000 and Rast quickly folded, but Fraser called.

On the {K-Spades} turn, Fraser checked and Andler moved all in for what appeared to be 40,000, Fraser snap-called by tossing in a single chip.

Christopher Andler: {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}
Chris Fraser: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

While Andler flopped best, he only had one out to remain in contention with Fraser turning the superior set, and a blank {Q-Clubs} on the river was of no help for the Swede. Fraser, in the meantime, has jumped up to more than three times the starting stack, trailing only Matt Berkey in the Gold section.

Defending Champion Blumstein Eliminated on Feature Table

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Scott Blumstein
Scott Blumstein

The ESPN feature tables kicked off at the start of Level 3 and among those to take a seat in the main spotlight were Jean Montury, Lacey Jones, defending champion Scott Blumstein, and Brian Yoon. The latter two tangled in a big pot that left the defending champion devastated, as he was sent to the rail early on.

Blumstein raised to 800 and Yoon three-bet to 3,700 in late position, which Blumstein called. On the {6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop, Blumstein check-called a bet of 3,000 and did so again on the {3-Spades} turn for 10,000. The {2-Spades} appeared on the river and Blumstein checked with 27,350 behind. Yoon moved all in and Blumstein called it off with the {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} only for Yoon to turn over {A-Spades}{J-Spades} for the back door nut flush.

A loud fanfare emerged and the entire Amazon room was preparing themselves for the entrance of what was expected to be Phil Hellmuth.

Instead, the group of musicians and girls in exotic dresses was led by Randall Emmett, an American film and television producer. He is the chairman and co-founder of production company Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films, and set the bar pretty high for Hellmuth's big show on July 4th.
