Ari Engel Riding High as Day 1 Event #60: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Draws to a Close

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 0 ante
Ari Engel
Ari Engel

He's already won one WSOP bracelet this series and Ari Engel looks to be in the mood for another as the Canadian was on incredible form in Event #60: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better, finishing with 216,200 chips as Day 1 drew to a close here at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The tournament attracted 1,117 hopefuls, which is almost 200 more than took part last year and Ari Engel (216,200) ended the day in fourth place on the leaderboard behind overnight chip leader Ray Medlin (240,100) and more than four times the average stack in play.

It’s been a fantastic series for Engel so far. He secured his first bracelet, netting $427,399 in the process, for his victory in Event #48: $2,500 No Limit Hold'em less than a week ago. Prior to that, he finished runner up in Event #38 $800 Pot Limit Omaha 8 or Better at the beginning of the month, too. Engel's deep runs and bracelet win have already put in contention for the WSOP Player of the Year title and he's off to the perfect start in this event to add yet more points.

Engel wasn’t the only big name to grace the Amazon Room today. Mike Sexton (82,800), Daniel Negreanu (77,200), Joseph Cheong (73,900), Mike Matusow (73,500), Barry Greenstein (61,200), Erik Seidel (45,400) Barny Boatman (36,600), Joe Hachem, (34,000), Joao Vieira (29,700), Kristen Bicknell (29,400) and Chris Ferguson (7,100), were just some of the well-known faces to get involved and survive the fun and games to bag up at the end of the night.

It wasn’t good news for all the notables, with Maurice Hawkins, Maria Ho, Justin Liberto, Allen Kessler and Scott Bohlman just a few of the notables who were unable find a bag at the end of play. Late registration is closed now, too, putting an end to the single re-entry that was available and taking the tournament into the knock-out stages.

In total, a $1,507,950 prizepool was generated and a very attractive $279,920 first place prize is on offer to whoever is the last man or woman standing. There will be 168 players who will make it to the money and the prize for making it past the bubble is a min-cash worth $2,249. Tomorrow they will return to continue battling it out, and PokerNews will return for Day 2 also, with live coverage from every day of every remaining event at the 50th annual World Series of Poker.

Ho Eliminated by Cartwright

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 0 ante
Maria Ho
Maria Ho

Maria Ho has hit the rail after getting short and losing the last of it in a hand against Kyle Cartwright just now.

Cartwright opened the betting to 2,000 in early position and after one call in middle position, Ho defended from the big blind.

The flop read {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} and Ho lead with a pot-sized bet for 6,500, which left her with 1,400 behind. Cartwright upped it again, which pushed out the other player and they turned their cards on their backs.

Kyle Cartwright: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}
Maria Ho: {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs}

Both players were drawing to chop for the low pot on qualifying boards and Cartwright's pair of aces was a long way ahead of Ho's pocket fives.

The turn paired with a {4-Hearts}, reducing the low pot chance and the {10-Spades} river couldn't help Ho, who had to leave the table.

Seidel Eliminated by Mince

Level 8 : 400/800, 0 ante
Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

Erik Seidel has just come unstuck after getting his short stack all in preflop with aces versus aces.

Bill Mince: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Erik Seidel: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

Though Mince had the better kicker, it was his two clubs that proved favourable, hitting a flush by the river on the {k-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{2-Spades}{q-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} board. With no low hand possible, all the chips went to Mince and Seidel had to make his way to the exit.

Three Quarters for Greenstein

Level 6 : 300/500, 0 ante
Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein

Three players were still in and facing a board of {5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. There was a bet of 5,000, which Barry Greenstein upped to 15,000. The player on the button swiftly moved all in for about 30,000, which got the initial better to pass but not Greenstein who made the call.

Barry Greenstein: {a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}

The players chopped the low pot with ace-three but Greenstein took the high with a flush.

Ho Chipping Up

Level 5 : 200/400, 0 ante
Maria Ho
Maria Ho

Maria Ho continues to build steadily. Just now she defended in the small blind after an early position open and two flat calls in front. The big blind came along too, making it five-handed to the flop.

It came down {9-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Clubs} and Ho opted to lead on the paired board, making it 800 to play. Two players called and two folded taking them to an {8-Hearts} turn. It was checks all round and the final card was the {q-Clubs}. Ho took the betting initiative once more, putting 2,700 over the line and both of her opponents folded, leaving Ho to collect the pot.

Day 1 of Event #60: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Starts at 3 p.m.

Joseph Couden
Joseph Couden

The first of three days of action in Event #60: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better will get underway at 3 p.m. local time in Amazon Purple here at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

The 50th annual World Series of Poker continues with yet another popular event. On the schedule for today are ten 60-minute levels, with a 20-minute break at the end of every two levels. Late registration is open for the first eight levels so will close at around midnight. The event also features a single re-entry format for any players who are eliminated while registration is still open.

Joseph Couden won this event in 2018 and took home $244,370 and his first bracelet after beating a field of 935 entrants, coming out on top of a star-studded final table that included the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow, Eli Elezra, and Bruno Fitoussi. Couden has already had some deep runs, cashing five times in this year's series, including a fifth-place finish in Event #43: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet a few days ago. The American will certainly be a formidable figure if he returns to defend his title.

As always PokerNews will be on hand, providing coverage of all the action over the next three days.
