First Time's the Charm: Michael Moncek Wins Event #13: $1,500 Limit Hold'em

Level 34 : 250,000/500,000, 0 ante
Michael Moncek
Michael Moncek

Michael Moncek, a native of Chicago, had three World Series of Poker Circuit rings on his poker resume. But he had never won the game’s ultimate prize, a WSOP gold bracelet.

That has now changed after Moncek won Event #13: $1,500 Limit Hold’em, defeating Ben Ross after a back-and-forth heads-up match to earn the $145,856 top prize.

Moncek admits he had never played Limit Hold’em before this tournament. He had come to the WSOP expecting to play as many events as possible, and this one just happened to be the only event on the schedule that day.

“It feels awesome, especially in a game that I’ve never played before,” he said following his win. “I’m going to have to learn to play it now.”

Moncek had live tournament winnings of around $235,000 before this event. His best finish in a WSOP bracelet event was 16th in the Salute to Warriors tournament in 2019. Earlier this week, he had a chance to add to his career totals in a big way in the $25,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em tournament, but he was eliminated two spots shy of the money.

He didn’t get too bothered by that loss. He just jumped right into the next tournament he could find. “You just have to go win the next tournament you play,” he said about overcoming that disappointment.

Day 3 Action

Day 3 began with 16 players remaining out of a starting field of 522. A burst of action saw three eliminations within the first 10 minutes of the day. By the time the final table was set, Moncek was second in chips to 2015 Main Event champion Joe McKeehen, and it would be in two pots against McKeehen that he would take control of the tournament.

Early on during the final table, McKeehen had made the nut straight while Moncek was holding a set of tens. The river paired up, giving Moncek a full house and the big pot. He would later eliminate McKeehen in fifth place in another cooler, both flopping a straight on a board of {q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}. Moncek’s, though, was higher with {k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}.

Moncek also knocked out Christoph Kwon in fourth and bracelet winner Yueqi Zhu in third place, setting up a heads-up battle with Ross. With Ross’ loud and exuberant rail cheering him on, Moncek ignored the noise and came back from a significant chip deficit. On the final hand, he made a flush with {3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} to crack the two pair of Ross.

Moncek isn’t going to stop playing every tournament in sight, even with the bracelet in his possession. His goal is simple. “To win Player of the Year, what else,” he said.

Moncek did have one supporter on the rail during the final table, his friend Adam. They celebrated the victory together, but now it’s right back to work. Moncek’s plans for tomorrow:

“Register for the next tournament,” he said.

That concludes PokerNews’ coverage of Event 13. Follow along the rest of the 2022 WSOP at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas for all the action.

Yueqi Zhu Eliminated in 3rd Place ($63,314)

Yueqi Zhu
Yueqi Zhu

Yueqi Zhu and Ben Ross went heads-up to a flop of {3-Spades}{7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}. Zhu bet and Ross called.

Zhu bet again on the {10-Hearts} turn before Ross raised. Zhu called to see the river.

Ross bet in the dark before the dealer turned over the {5-Clubs}. Zhu spent a few moments considering the decision.

"You can't win. You took too long," Ross told him before Zhu eventually called.

"Set," Ross announced, turning over {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts} to win the pot.

A few hands later, Zhu called a pre-flop raise from Michael Moncek. The flop came {4-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{5-Spades} and Zhu check-raised, leaving himself around 300,000 behind.

Moncek called and they got the rest of Zhu's chips in the middle on the {a-Diamonds} turn.

Yueqi Zhu: {k-Diamonds}{2-Spades}
Michael Moncek: {k-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}

Moncek was ahead with a pair of fives, while Zhu needed to complete a straight draw. The river came the {6-Hearts} and the last remaining bracelet winner in the field was eliminated.

Moncek and Ross are taking a quick break before the start of heads-up play.

Christoph Kwon shoved his last 275,000 in the middle from the button and both Yueqi Zhu and Michael Moncek called from the blinds.

Zhu and Moncek checked as the board came {8-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{a-Spades}{10-Hearts} before Moncek bet the {7-Diamonds} river.

"I guess you have a nine," Zhu said before folding.

Moncek did indeed have a nine, turning over {q-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} for a straight. Kwon showed {j-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and hit the rail in fourth place.

Joe McKeehen Eliminated in 5th Place ($32,761)

Joe McKeehen
Joe McKeehen

Ben Ross raised before Joe McKeehen three-bet from the button, leaving himself around 40,000 behind. Ross put him all in and McKeehen called.

Joe McKeehen: {k-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Ben Ross: {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

McKeehen stayed ahead as the flop came {6-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}, but Ross hit the {10-Diamonds} on the turn.

"Hold one time," he yelled as the dealer turned over the {k-Hearts} on the river, giving McKeehen a higher pair.

McKeehen doubled up to 1,200,000, but he was all in again the next hand against Michael Moncek.

McKeehen called a three-bet and saw a flop of {9-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}. Moncek bet, McKeehen raised, and Moncek called. They got the rest of McKeehen's chips in the middle on the {4-Diamonds} turn.

McKeehen had flopped a straight with {j-Spades}{8-Spades}, but Moncek had a higher straight with {k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}. The {3-Diamonds} on the river was inconsequential, and the 2015 Main Event champ made his exit in fifth place.

Joe McKeehen raised in early position and Fred Lavassani three-bet in the big blind. McKeehen called.

The dealer fanned a flop of {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} and Lavassani continued with a bet. McKeehen instantly dropped two 100,000-value chips for a raise and Lavassani put his remaining stack of roughly 230,000 across the line.

Fred Lavassani: {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Joe McKeehen: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

Lavassani was looking for a ten to stay alive but the {k-Hearts} on the turn sealed his fate and the {4-Hearts} river was just a formality as Lavassani was sent to the payout desk in 7th place for $18,100.

Yueqi Zhu
Yueqi Zhu

Ben Ross raised from early position and both Steven Wolansky and Yueqi Zhu came along from the blinds.

All three players checked the {j-Spades}{q-Spades}{2-Spades} flop before Zhu bet on the {3-Clubs} turn.

Only Ross called to the {k-Spades} river, when Zhu put out another bet.

"If you have a flush, you're good," Ross said as he called.

Zhu didn't have just a flush. He turned over the {a-Spades}{10-Spades} for a royal flush as he stopped to take a picture of the board before players went off on break.

Yueqi Zhu raised the button and Ben Ross three-bet from the big blind. Zhu called.

The dealer spread a flop of {9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{3-Hearts} and Ross fired in a bet. Zhu made the call.

The {6-Hearts} fell on the turn and Ross wasted no time tossing chips across the line to bet. Zhu stuck in a call and as soon as he did, Ross fired a bet in the dark.

The {6-Diamonds} landed on the river and Zhu went into the tank. After a few moments, he called off his stack of 120,000. Ross tabled {a-Spades}{j-Spades} for ace-high and Zhu doubled up with {a-Hearts}{3-Clubs}.
