Iraj Parvizi Leads $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller Field After Day 1

Level 10 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante
Iraj Parvizi
Iraj Parvizi

The third largest buy-in of the 2017 World Series of Poker kicked off Wednesday afternoon with twice the cards dealt to each player than the first two prestigious large buy-in events offered. Day 1 of Event #67: $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed High Roller got underway at 3 p.m. and drew a field of 187.

Only 103 players remain after ten hour-long levels of battle on the felt. Leading the charge heading into Day 2 is Iraj Parvizi.

During the last few hands of the night, Parvizi was the beneficiary of a dream river card to make a straight to crack Sean Winters' flopped set after the two got their stacks in the middle on the turn. Parvizi bagged a healthy stack of 850,000 soon after.

The defending champion of this event, Finland's Jens Kyllönen, was a no-show, but the inaugural champ back in 2015 Anthony Zinno made an appearance and will continue on to Day 2 after bagging 172,000. 2016 runner-up Tommy Le also jumped into the mix, just days after claiming his first bracelet in Event #54: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed Championship. Le will carry a stack of 126,500 into Day 2.

Joining Parvizi at the top of the counts are Michael Kamran (550,000), Artem Babakhanyan (524,500), Gjergj Sinishtaj (508,500), Joshua Beckley (471,000) and James Calderaro (466,500).

A great story from the early stages came not long after the day kicked off. Leon Tsoukernik scooped a monster pot by eliminating Nadar Kakhmazov, moments after Kakhmazov took his seat. Tsoukernik almost tripled his starting stack to take a huge lead, but less than an hour later he was standing on the other side of the rail. His chips were distributed to Max Silver and Babakhanyan.

Several notables are also headed to play on Day 2, including Silver (402,500), JC Tran (388,000), David Williams (365,500), Roberto Romanello (284,000), Brain Rast (259,000), Sylvain Loosli (240,000), and Eric Wasserson (215,000).

With 187 entries through Day 1, this marks a record attendance for this prestigious event. That number could easily grow even more as late-registration remains open until the start of Day 2. In 2106 a total of 184 players entered, beating 2015’s mark of 175.

Notables failing to progress include Brandon Shack-Harris, Talal Shakerchi, Davidi Kitai, Robert Mizrachi, Cliff Josephy, Mohsin Charania, Connor Drinan, Shaun Deeb and David Benyamine.

Day 2 will resume at 2 p.m. on Thursday inside the Amazon Room with another ten hour-long levels on the schedule.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor to provide all the action until a winner is crowned on Saturday, July 8.

Lackey Triples Up in Massive Clash Between Smith and Obst

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Micah Smith's Stack Sent Crashing
Micah Smith's Stack Sent Crashing

Paul Lackey was already all in and at risk for 34,200 while a reraise for the pot saw James Obst and Micah Smith invest another 88,400 on top of that for an even bigger side pot. The flop fell {7-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and Obst moved all in from the cutoff for 111,200 with Smith calling.

Paul Lackey: {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{J-Spades}{2-Hearts}
James Obst: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Micah Smith: {Q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}

Both the {4-Hearts} turn and {3-Spades} river changed nothing and Lackey tripled up while Obst doubled through Smith in a huge side pot with just ace-king high.

Jachtmann Finishes Off Josephy

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Cliff Josephy in an earlier event
Cliff Josephy in an earlier event

Jan-Peter Jachtmann and Cliff Josephy had tangled in a big pot earlier on and it was a cruel final chapter that the German ended up being the one to take the remainder of Josephy's stack.

Josephy raised the pot and Jachtmann three-bet to 15,000 out of the blinds. Josephy moved all in for around 65,000 and Jachtmann quickly called.

Cliff Josephy: {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{4-Hearts}
Jan-Peter Jachtmann: {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

The {K-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Spades} flop gave Jachtmann two pair, and the {4-Clubs} turn and {K-Hearts} river gave Jachtmann a full house to send Josephy packing.

Only a few moments later, Ashly Butler was also spotted on his way out.

Jachtmann Doubles Through Josephy

Level 7 : 600/1,200, 0 ante
Jan-Peter Jachtmann
Jan-Peter Jachtmann

Picking up the action on the three-way turn of {J-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}, Jan-Peter Jachtmann faced a bet of 66,000 from Cliff Josephy, in the cutoff, and check-called while the third player in the hand let it go. The {2-Diamonds} river completed the board, and Jachtmann moved all in for his last 20,300.

After brief consideration, Josephy announced, "Okay I call," and Jachtmann turned over {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} for the nut flush. Josephy wanted to muck his cards, but as per the showdown rules, Jachtmann insisted that the cards were revealed. Josephy had {Q-Diamonds}{J-}{8-Diamonds}{7-} for the queen-high flush and lost the vast majority of his stack.

The next hand, Jachtmann limped in from the small blind, and Anthony Zinno checked in the big blind. Jachtmann check-called a bet of 2,200 from Zinno on the {A-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop and did so again for 4,000 on the {K-Hearts} turn. Jachtmann then bet the {3-Hearts} river for 15,000, and Zinno folded.

Tollerene Back in Action

Level 5 : 400/800, 0 ante
Ben Tollerene in an Earlier Event
Ben Tollerene in an Earlier Event

Micah Smith limped in, and Ben Tollerene raised to 3,000 in the cutoff. Ajay Chabra three-bet the pot to 12,800 on the button, and the action folded back to Tollerene, who called.

On the {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} flop, Tollerene checked, and Chabra bet the pot. Tollerene check-raisee all in for his last 46,200, Chabra called, and the cards were tabled.

Ben Tollerene: {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} (flush)
Ajay Chabra: {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}{10-Spades}{8-Spades} (top set)

Neither the {4-Clubs} turn nor the {3-Clubs} river paired the board, and Tollerene doubled.

Babakhanyan Sends Tsoukernik to the Rail

Artem Babakhanyan
Artem Babakhanyan

Artem Babakhanyan has disposed of one-time chip leader Leon Tsoukernik, just a level and a half into the day.

We missed the action but Babakhanyan was able to fill us in. The flop came {a-}{10-Clubs}{3-} and Babakhanyan had {a-}{10-}{x-}{x-} with two diamonds. Tsoukernik had flopped a set of threes and a diamond on the river gave Babakhanyan a flush to win the pot and bust Tsoukernik.

Tsoukernik Busts Kakhmazov, Takes Huge Lead

Level 1 : 150/300, 0 ante
Leon Tsoukernik
Leon Tsoukernik

Nadar Kakhmazov opened to 4,450 and got calls from Leon Tsoukernik, a player in early position, and Max Silver.

The flop was {2-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and Tsoukernik led, betting pot. The bet was 19,200 and Silver called. Kakhmazov three-bet pot, which put him all in for about 97,000.

Tsoukernik four-bet jammed all in and Silver leaned back, saying, "I might need a while guys."

A crowd began to gather as Silver examined Tsoukernik's stack, realizing he was covered. "I'm the chipleader, so it doesn't matter what happens. I'm still in," Tsoukernik told the crowd that had gathered around the table.

After a few moments, Silver folded.

Kakhmazov: {k-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Tsoukernik: {9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{2-Spades}

Tsoukernik was in the lead and held through the turn and river — {10-Spades}{j-Spades} — improving to a straight and sending Kakhmazov to the rail moments after he took his seat.

At 3 p.m. local time, Day 1 of the 2017 World Series of Poker Event #67: $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed High Roller gets underway at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The defending champion of this event is Finland's Jens Kyllönen who emerged victorious in a 184-entry strong field to claim his first gold bracelet and a payday of $1,127,035.

While Kyllönen most likely won't be back to defend his title, 2016 runner-up Tommy Le will be there with plenty of confidence after finally claiming his first gold bracelet on his sixth WSOP Omaha final table appearance just a few days ago. Le took down Event #54: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed Championship after defeating Chris Lee heads up and confirmed his participation in this event in his winner's interview.

Day 1 of this four-day event will feature a total of 10 levels of 60 minutes each with a 15-minute break every two levels. All participants will receive 125,000 in chips and the registration remains open until the start of Day 2.
