Rettenmaier Leads as 53 Advance from Day 1b

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

The 2012 World Series of Poker Europe Event #2: €1,100 No-Limit Hold'em continued on Sunday as 331 players turned out for Day 1b, the second of two starting flights. In just over nine levels of play, that number was reduced to just 53 with Marvin Rettenmaier and his stack of 69,950 leading the way.

Combined with Day 1a’s 295 players, Event #2 drew a total of 626 entries and created a prize pool of €600,960, which will be distributed to the top 63 with €126,207 reserved for the winner. Tomorrow, the remaining 98 players from both starting flights will combined under the same roof for Day 2 action.

Back on Day 1a, Rettenmaier late registered for the tournament but didn't have much luck as he busted fairly quickly. He took advantage of the re-entry format and fired a second bullet, which proved to be a wise decision. In a hand earlier today, the board read {5-Spades}{3-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} when an unknown player had checked from early position and Rettenmaier took the opportunity to move all in. His opponent only had 1,550 behind and tank-called only to discover his {A-Clubs}{K-Spades} was no good against the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} of Rettenmaier. It wasn’t a huge pot, but it was reminiscent of how the German ran throughout the day.

Unfortunately not everyone was as fortunate as Rettenmaier. Andy Frankenberger, Chance Kornuth, Oliver Speidel, Vanessa Selbst and Michael Mizrachi were just a few of the players who re-entered and fell short for a second time. They were joined by Day 1b newbies Jennifer Tilly, David “ODB” Baker, Phil Hellmuth, Charlotte Van Brabander, Roland Israelashivili, Dan Shak and Brandon Cantu, just to name a few.

With that said, a few re-entries did make the most of their second chance including Dominik Nitsche, Joe Kuether, Tristan Wade, Erik Cajelais and John Monnette, all of whom finished toward the top of the Day 1b chip counts. They, along with John Tababtabia, Roger Hairabedian, Jean Paul Pasqualini, Bourcier de Carbon, and Gil George, will join the likes of Day 1a’s Antonio Esfandiari, Mclean Karr and Antonin Teisseire on Monday for Day 2 action.

Kollman Succumbs

Erich Kollmann
Erich Kollmann

A short-stacked Erich Kollmann moved all in for 575 from the cutoff and received calls from Marc Barller in the small and the player in the big blind. Both those players proceeded to check it down as the board ran out {A-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}, and Bariller showed {2-Spades}{6-Hearts}. The big blind then showed {8-Clubs}{5-Hearts} for the win as Kollmann simply mucked.

Happy John Monnette

John Monnette

Yesterday John Monnette had a short and not-so-sweet day after busting in the first level. Monnette, who won a bracelet this summer and is contending for Player of the Year, opted to fire a second bullet here on Day 2 and it's paying dividends thus far.

In a recent hand, Monnette and a player in the small blind got the money in on a {8-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} flop with the latter being all in for around 6,500. The small blind held {A-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and was in dire straits against the {A-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} of Monnette. The {8-Hearts} turn ended any suspense as Monnette improved to a boat, which left the small blind drawing dead, and he was pushed the pot after the meaningless {K-Spades} was put out on the river. Monnette is now up to 30,000.

Wrong Call for O'Brien

Dan O'Brien
Dan O'Brien

With 7,000 in the pot and a board reading {9-Hearts}{2-Spades}{5-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}, a player in the small blind moved all in and put the pressure on Dan O'Brien, who was sitting with 4,000 on the button. O'Brien seemed perplexed by the bet and thought for awhile, oftentimes talking things out, before making the call.

The small blind then rolled over {9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} for a straight and O'Brien shook his head in disgust. "Good luck guys," he said as he collected his things and exited the tournament area.

Day 1b of Event #2: €1,100 No-Limit Hold'em is Set to Begin

Majestic Barriere
Majestic Barriere

Yesterday, World Series of Poker Europe Event #2: €1,100 No-Limit Hold'em kicked off as 295 players took to the felt for the first of two starting flights. Just 45 players survived with American Ashly Butler leading the way. Today, the Casino Barrière will play host to Day 1b, which is expected to be even bigger and better than the first flight.

You see, this particular tournament is a re-entry, meaning the 250 players who busted on Day 1a have the option of re-entering on Day 1b. We expect many pros to take advantage and fire a second bullet including Vanessa Selbst, Chance Kornuth, Davidi Kitai, Marvin Rettenmaier, Michael Mizrachi, Joe Kuether, Jeff Lisandro, John Juanda, Andy Frankenberger and Jonathan Aguiar.

In addition, they will likely be joined by some new face, such as Phil Hellmuth and David “ODB” Baker, both of who were unable to play yesterday because of their deep runs in Event #1: €2,700 Six-Handed NLHE. All of these players and more will be looking to join the likes of Day 1a’s Antonio Esfandiari, Mclean Karr and Antonin Teisseire on Monday for Day 2 action.

The plan for the day is to play the same amount of time as the first flight, meaning action should come to an end a short time into Level 9. Join us in about an hour as we bring you all the latest and greatest from Event #2: €1,100 No-Limit Hold'em Day 1b.
