The 12-Time Bracelet Winner Looking For #13

It was a quick day of play here in Cannes, France as the final 24 players returned to battle for a coveted spot among the final table of the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event. After a flurry of big pots and dramatic eliminations, the official final table is set with none other than twelve-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth leading the way.

After the final 24 players took their seats, the play began fast and furious and never relented as the day wore on. The players to bust before the final two-table redraw at 16 were able to earn a payday of €26,611. Those to see the exit included Joe Kuether, Vladislav Varlashin, two-time WSOP bracelet winner Andy Frankenberger, Vadzim Markushevski, [Removed:138], Joe McGown, Liv Boeree and Curt Kohlberg.

As the last woman standing in the field, Boeree came into play today focused and poised to make a deep run. However, the deck seemed to have it out for Boeree, as the during the second hand of play she ran {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} into Stephane Albertini's {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} for a solid chunk of her stack. While she was able to recover from that hit, she eventually saw her tournament life end at the hands of Joseph Cheong. Cheong opened with a raise and Boeree three-bet all in for 272,000. Cheong called with {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs} only to find that he was behind Boeree's {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}. The flop and turn were safe for Boeree, as they brought {7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} to the felt. The river, however, spelled disaster, as it was the {10-Diamonds}, which paired Cheong's ten and sealed the deal on Boeree's tournament.

Kohlberg was eliminated immediately after Boeree, and his elimination sent a shock wave throughout the room that prompted players from every table to stand up and watch the action. Kohlberg opened with a raise to 30,000 from under the gun and Hellmuth three-bet to 180,000. It folded back to Kohlberg and he wasted no time announcing that he was all in for roughly 900,000.

"What did he say? All in?" said Hellmuth. "I call!" Hellmuth shot out of his chair and tabled {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}.

Kohlberg showed {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and was in dire need of some help. The flop brought Kohlberg hope, however, as it fell {8-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}, giving him an open-ended straight draw. Hellmuth took one look at the flop and stormed away from the table.

The {A-Diamonds} rolled off on the turn, giving Hellmuth a set but Kohlberg was still drawing live going to the river. Fifth street was paint, but unfortunately for Kohlberg it was the {J-Spades}, pairing him up and securing his elimination in 17th place.

The next two players to go took home a prize of €32,356 for their efforts. Max Silver, who finished 8th in this very event last year, fell at the hands of Cheong when he called all in with two pair against Cheong's made straight. David Benyamine was the next player to see elimination when he ran into the full house of Sergii Baranov.

Kyle Julius and Toby Lewis were the next two to go, and finished in 14th and 13th place respectively. Julius and Lewis took home a solid prize of €40,320. The 2005 WSOP Main Event runner up Steve Dannenman was the next to see his tournament come to an end. Dannemann rode the short stack for most of this tournament and finally moved all in from the button holding two nines. Cheong woke up with pocket jacks in the big blind and the jacks were able to hold, sending the always smiling Dannenmann home in 12th place.

Nicolas Cardyn and Scott Seiver were the next two to be eliminated, and the exit of Seiver prompted a full redraw for the unofficial final table of nine. Play for the day came close finishing when Timothy Adams moved all in and was dominated by Hellmuth. Fortunately for Adams, he was able to spike a ten on the river to double up.

The table then engaged in two rough hours of poker where many chips exchanged hands and and short stacks doubled up. Finally, Adams became our final table bubble boy by getting his entire stack in the middle with {A-Hearts}{j-Spades} against Christopher Brammer's {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}. Adams was unable to improve and he was forced to settle for a 9th place finish.

Timothy Adams Eliminated in 9th Place (€66,528)

Timothy Adams goes all in.
Timothy Adams goes all in.

Christopher Brammer moved all in from the cutoff for 487,000 and Timothy Adams called off for a little less in the big blind.

Showdown
Adams: {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}
Brammer: {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}

"I folded ace-jack," Sergii Baranov said from the small blind. It wasn't good news for Adams, who was at risk and needed to improve. The {2-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} flop wasn't particularly exciting, and neither was the {8-Clubs} turn. Adams needed either an ace or jack, of which there were only two left of each, in order to survive, but it was not meant to be as the {7-Clubs} blanked.

With that, the 2012 WSOP Europe Main Event final table is set.

Scott Seiver Eliminated in 10th Place (€66,528)

Scott Seiver - 10th Place

Jason Mercier opened with a min-raise from the cutoff before the flop and was called by Scott Seiver from the button and Paul Tedeschi from the big blind.

The flop came {9-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} and Tedeschi checked to Mercier who continued out for 38,000. Seiver called and Tedeschi folded. The {J-Hearts} fell on fourth street and Mercier continued for 70,000. Seiver called once again.

The {3-Clubs} completed the board and Mercier moved Seiver all in. Seiver ripped his headphones off his head and made what looked to be quite the tough decision. Eventually he called and Mercier showed {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}. Seiver mucked his hand and was eliminated in 10th place.

Nicolas Cardyn Eliminated in 11th Place (€52,416)

Phil Hellmuth opened for 50,000 under the gun and was met with an all-in three-bet to 153,000 from Nicolas Cardyn on the button. Both blinds folded, Hellmuth asked for a count, and then he committed the chips to put Cardyn at risk.

Showdown
Cardyn: {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Hellmuth: {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

Hellmuth had Cardyn crushed, and he would put an end to the Frenchman's Main Event run in 11th place after the board ran out {Q-Hearts}{8-Spades}{9-Spades}{A-Spades}{3-Clubs}. The remaining ten players will now play two five-handed tables until we get down to nine, at which point they'll combine and play the unofficial final table.

Steve Dannenmann Eliminated in 12th Place (€52,416)

Steve Dannenmann busts out in 12th place.

Action folded around to Steve Dannenmann's button and he moved all in for his last roughly 130,000. Joseph Cheong snapped him off from the big blind and showed {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}.

Unfortunately for Dannenmann, he held an under pair and his {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades} were in need of dire help to score him a double up. The flop came down {Q-Spades}{A-Clubs}{8-Spades} and was of no help to the 2005 WSOP Main Event Runner-Up.

The {4-Spades} hit the turn.

"There's always a sweat," said Cheong as Dannenmann called for a spade.

Alas, the {10-Clubs} fell on the river to eliminate Dannenmann in 12th place. Cheong stood up to shake Dannenmann's hand and Dannenmann said "You always fold jacks! Jacks are a bad hand!" with a smile.

The ever jovial Dannenmann will take home €52,416 for his efforts here in Cannes.

Toby Lewis Eliminated in 13th Place (€40,320)

Toby Lewis - 13th Place

In a pot that was raised preflop, Toby Lewis, Sergii Baranov, and Stephane Albertini saw a flop of {8-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}. Lewis and Baranov checked to Albertini who fired out a bet of 52,000.

Lewis counted out a raise to 145,000 and moved it into the center. Baranov got out of the way and Albertini announced all in. Lewis called for his tournament life and the hands were shown:

Albertini: {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}
Lewis: {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}

Albertini was way out in front after the flop and stayed the way when the {k-Hearts} fell on fourth and the {5-Clubs} on fifth. Lewis was eliminated in 13th place and will collect €40,320 for his efforts.

Kyle Julius Eliminated in 14th Place (€40,320)

The drama continues with huge elimination hands. Phil Hellmuth has once again regained the chip lead.

On a {7-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Diamonds} flop, Phil Hellmuth led out for 45,000 and his lone opponent Kyle Julius chose to flat call.

Fourth street brought the {A-Hearts} and Hellmuth quickly moved 110,000 into the middle.

Julius reached into his stack and put out a raise to 225,000.

"This is such a sick hand for me," lamented Hellmuth. "Alright, I call,"

The dealer pounded the table and rolled off the {4-Clubs} on the river. Hellmuth quickly checked and Julius announced that he was all in for his last 298,000. Hellmuth stood up from the table and stared at the board, talking the hand out to himself under his breath.

After about ninety seconds, Hellmuth counted out enough chips to call and pushed them forward.

"You're good," said Julius.

"YES!" yelled Hellmuth as he clapped his hands and jumped up from the table, showing {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for two pair. Julius mucked his hand but tournament staff forced it to be tabled - {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}.

"Great play, kid," said Hellmuth with a sincere tone to Julius. "Seriously. I almost laid that down. Remind me to buy you a bottle of Dom. One bottle."

Julius will take home €40,320 in tournament winnings while Hellmuth is now the chip leader with about 2.5 million in chips.

David Benyamine Eliminated in 15th Place (€32,256)

David Benyamine - 15th

After David Benyamine raised from middle position, Sergii Baranov called and the two took a flop of {4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}. Benyamine put out a bet of 40,000, Baranov called, and the dealer burned and turned the {10-Spades}. This time Benyamine checked, but called when Baranov bet 80,000.

Benyamine checked for a second time on the {3-Spades} river, and Baranov spiked out a tall stack of red T25,000 chips, enough to cover Benyamine if he chose to call. The high-stakes pro thought for a moment and then committed his last 320,000. Baranov proceeded to proudly roll over {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} for a full house, and Benyamine sent his cards to the muck before exiting in 15th place.

Max Silver Eliminated in 16th Place (€32,256)

Max Silver - 16th Place
Max Silver - 16th Place

Joseph Cheong did not let Phil Hellmuth hold onto the limelight for long. Cheong has once again overtaken the chip lead after the following hand:

On a flop of {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{K-Spades}, Cheong checked to Max Silver who bet 28,000. Cheong called and the turn brought the {9-Diamonds}. Cheong checked for a second time and Silver fired 64,000. Once again Cheong decided to stick around.

The {A-Clubs} rolled off on fifth street and Cheong checked one last time. Silver moved 122,000 into the middle.

Cheong thought for a moment before plopping down a large stack of red t25,000 chips into the middle. This bet was enough to put Silver all in and he was visibly upset over the size of the bet.

"This is incredibly close," said Silver, who then pulled a coin out of his wallet to help him make his decision. Ultimately, Silver opted not to use the coin, and announced a call.

Cheong showed {8-Diamonds}{7-Spades} for a straight and Silver flung his cards into the muck. They were turned over to reveal {A-Spades}{k-Diamonds} for top two pair.

With his elimination of Silver, Cheong is now our chip leader with about 2,350,000 in chips.

Curt Kohlberg Eliminated in 17th Place (€26,611)

Curt Kohlberg - 17th Place
Curt Kohlberg - 17th Place

Phil Hellmuth is our new chip leader.

Curt Kohlberg opened to 30,000 from under the gun and it folded to Phil Hellmuth who pushed out a sizable three-bet to 180,000. It folded back around to Kohlberg who announced that he was all in for 900,000 total.

"What did he say? All in?" said Hellmuth. "I call!" Hellmuth shot out of his chair and tabled {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}

Kohlberg showed {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and was in dire need of some help.

Fortunately for Kohlberg, the flop brought him hope, as it fell {8-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}, giving him an open-ended straight draw.

While stacking his new chips, Hellmuth broke into a chorus of English New Wave band Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World". Hellmuth may not be ruling the world, but he is certainly ruling this room as this win boosts him to 2,000,000 and is good for the top spot on the chip counts.
