That's a wrap for Day 1 of Event No. 41. When registration closed for the day, the final number of entrants was set at 847, a good amount larger than last year's field. As it stands, it looks to be Mike Chappus as the overnight chip leader barring any crazy action that we missed on the last few hands of the night. He amassed himself a stack of 133,400 by the end of the night.
Plenty of big names showed up for this one, but not all of them made it through the day. Eric Baldwin, Jon Friedberg, Jason Mercier, Scott Seiver, Jeff Madsen and Erica Schoenberg all vanished from play before day's end. Tom Dwan also busted rather early on as did Phil Ivey, fresh off his bracelet victory last night.
Out of those names still hanging around, we've got Mike Matusow, Phil Hellmuth, Binh Nguyen, Ben Lamb, David Sands and Tony Cousineau. Even the defending champion Brandon Cantu is still alive. Cantu held the chip lead for a good portion of today, but had a few hiccups towards the end of the day that caused him to finish out with 27,300 in chips.
Barry Greenstein (83,000), Spencer Lawrence (79,500), Kevin MacPhee (77,100), Michael Sapko (76,500) are the few that look to be the closest to Chappus on the overnight leaderboard.
Play resumes tomorrow across the hall in the Amazon Room at 2:30 p.m. local time. We'll see you back here then, but for now you can point your browser towards our other WSOP coverage to fill up your time. Enjoy!
It's that time of night. Each table will play three more hands before bagging up the chips.
Jeff Madsen moved his whole stack of 7,200 into the middle after an opponent opened for 2,800. That opponent was the only player to call the re-raise, taking the two men to a pre-flop showdown. Madsen's wound up quartered by his opponent's when the board came to give each player the nut low but to also make two pair for Madsen's opponent. Once the stacks were split, Madsen was left with about 4,000.
On the turn, the board read and Mike Matusow fired 3,000. His opponent went all in for 9,000 an Matusow made the call. Matusow held the and his opponent the .
Going to the fifth and final community card, Matusow had the lead with a full house. The river completed the board with the and kept Matusow's full boat in front, eliminating the other player and moving Matusow up to 44,000 in chips.
Barry Greenstein suffered a small setback after knocking out Jeff Lisandro but he recovered by eliminating another player. Greenstein opened pre-flop for 2,400 and was re-raised by a player to 8,400. That re-raise cleared the field for Greenstein, who then raised pot. Greenstein and his opponent were quickly all in.
Greenstein:
Opponent:
The two men had virtually identical hands, but everything changed after the flop came all diamonds, . It gave Greenstein the nut flush and the best low. The turn and river blanked and to give Greenstein the pot. He's up to 81,000.
Phil Hellmuth just got moved to Mike Matusow's table a few moments ago and limped in during this hand from middle position. Another player limped behind him and both blinds were in as well. The flop came down and the big blind fired 1,500 after the small blind checked. Hellmuth made the call and the the player after him folded along with the small blind.
The turn was the and both players checked. The river completed the board with the and the big blind checked. Hellmuth fired out 2,000 and he was called.
Hellmuth tabled the and his opponent mucked.
Matusow grabbed Hellmuth's card and held them while yelling out, "First f***ing hand your dealt you get the best starting hand, ace, ace, king, deuce doubled suited and you play it like a world class champ, you limp in!"
