Day 1 Concludes With Ryan D'Angelo On Top

Last year in 2006's Event #36: $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em Marvin Rettenmaier ended the day with the chip lead. History did not repeat itself tonight though with Rettenmaier finishing the day near the top of the pack with 99,100. The person who does sits atop the chip count throne is Ryan D'Angelo who bagged 190,300 for the day.
With 1,607 players coming out for their chance at poker glory only 233 will be returning tomorrow with their bracelet dreams and chip stacks still intact. With the field size reaching over 1,500 play consisted of 11 levels today.
Some notables who will be making the rounds on day 2 are Vanessa Selbst who spent her day gathering chips; René Angélil, Martin Staszko, and Randy Lew. All these players fought tooth and nail to get where they are, and look to put themselves in prime positions to win the $694,609 first place money.
The day had its fair share of short comings with Nick Binger, Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Ivey, Erick Lindgren, and Tony Dunst all being eliminated early on.
Jason Somerville had an interesting time today almost proving the old adage "a chip and a chair" true. After losing a hand Somerville was left with a single green chip with 25. Somerville was able to turn that 25 into 1,100 and put himself in a position where moving all in wasn't his only move. Unfortunately his mini rush of doubling and tripling up could only last so long and we lost him in the chaos of the day.

Big Stack Watch
This chip leader race is getting pretty tight at the top. At the moment there are fifteen players with stack over the century mark.
Bon Phan is one of them after eliminating Olav Hauge. Phan held

Fall for Moorman
Chris Moorman has been on a steady decline after climbing his stack to well over 100,000. Recently we found him getting involved in a pot with a board reading 
. Moorman's opponent in early position checked and Moorman fired out for 2,500. After almost a minute passed the early position player raised it to 6,700. Moorman made the call and to the river we went.
After the 
on the river the early position player waited until a minute or two dripped off the clock before placing a bet of 14,800. Moorman then measured out his chips a few times before ultimately folding. Now sitting with around 28,000 Moorman has some room to make up for.

Lewis Leaves and D'Angelo Delivering
There are 315 players left with an average stack of 38,262 and here is the news from the Gold Section of the Brasilia Room.
Toby Lewis has left the building, eliminated at the hands of Ryan D'Angelo. Lewis flopped a flush draw and went with it while D'Angelo called with top-pair and held it. That elimination put D'Angelo on 45,000 but he has since tripled that stack and sits behind a hefty looking 130,000.
Some of the other big stacks in the Gold Section belong to Peter Gilmore (124,000), Shankar Pillai (100,000) and Daniel Chamberlain (100,000).
Bryan Pellegrino secured his first-ever live six-figure score when he finished runner-up to Nick Jivkov in Event #5: $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold'em for $117,199, an event that Pellegrino went into the final table as the chip leader. We have just seen Pellegrino eliminate Petr Bartagon

to move up to 40,000.
In other news, Marvin Rettenmaier has eliminated Nicholas Verkaik, pocket aces versus pocket jacks, to move him up to 83,000, and Steven Kerr has just dragged in a nice pot to put him up to 74,000 after flopping

René Angélil Continues to Collect
René Angélil three-bet to 5,400 from the small blind after his opponent made it 2,400 from the button. The button made the call and both players were allowed to see the flop.
The flop came 
and Angélil checked. The button fired out for 4,000 and Angélil quickly made it 14,000. The button then grabbed up all of his chips and pushed them in the middle. Angélil only needed to put in about 5,000 more and he did just that.

As long as a spade didn't land on the turn or the river Angélil would be awarded the pot. The on the turn wasn't a spade, but it did give the button another out. Now any ten could hit and Angélil would forfeit the pot. The 
river though allowed Angélil to breathe easy, as he had won the pot.
