A rare occurrence at the WSOP this summer -- we've made it all of the way down to nine players in two days, and are set for an exciting final table tomorrow for Event #44, the $2,500 Mixed Hold'em (Limit/No-Limit) event.

On Day 1 we quickly moved from a starting field of 507 down to just 69 returners today, and that torrid pace continued for most of Day 2. We quickly made the cash today, losing Grant Hinkle, Shannon Shorr and 13 others within just a couple of hours.

Soon after that the rapid parade of players to the cashier's cage began, among them Eric Froehlich, Jeff Shulman, Erica Schoenberg, Matt Matros, Alexandre Gomes, and Andreas Hoivold. Jim Collopy and Matt Stout both competed for the chip lead for a while, but both went out shy of the top 20. Eli Elezra also went out in 23rd.

Finally, following Jonathan Tamayo's elimination in 12th place, things slowed down a bit, and it would take close to two-and-a-half hours for the next elimination -- Steven Kelly -- in 11th. And it was only a short while later that Alfonso Amendola would exit in 10th and our final table was set.

Jarred Solomon and Gavin Smith return tomorrow in a virtual tie for the chip lead, with Danny Hannawa and Michael Michnik close behind.

Alfonso Amendola Eliminated in 10th Place ($16,663)

Alfonso Amendola was down to about 170,000 -- enough to cap the betting before the flop and have just a little left over -- when he put in a raise from middle position and it folded around to Timothy Finne who three-bet from the big blind. The pair proceeded to cap the betting, and even tabled their cards before the flop came out, at which point the rest of Amendola's chips made it in.

Finne showed and Amendola . The turn was the and the river the , and Amendola is out.

Santoro Survives

Daniel Idema opened with a raise to 24,000 from middle position, and Michael Santoro reraised all in with his last 85,000. It folded back around, and Idema made the call.

Idema showed and Santoro . The flop came , giving Santoro a set. The turn suggested the possibility of a chop, but the ensured Santoro the double-up.

He's back up to 175,000 now, while Idema has about 165,000.

Gavin Smith opened from the cutoff with a raise to 27,000 and it folded back to Steven Kelly in the small blind who pushed all in with his last 180,000. Danny Hannawa folded from the BB, and Smith snap-called.

The flop came and Smith was still in front, but the gave Kelly the lead. But the fell on the river, giving Smith the better pair and ending Kelly's hopes for back-to-back bracelets (after winning Event #39, the $1,500 NLHE Shootout earlier this week.)

We're down to ten, and the remaining players are now rearranging themselves around a single table.

Much Ado

Shortly after the return from break, Alfonso Amendola pushed all in from the cutoff with his last 90,000, and Dan Idema called him from the button. A little bit of tension as the players readied to show their cards, but that lessened soon after their cards were tabled.

The tension returned after the , making a flush possible. But the turn and river brought a couple of black fours, and the pair chopped the pot.
