Day 2 Completed

Day 2 In The Books!

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante
Greg Brooks
Greg Brooks

We came into today’s Day 2 expecting plenty of action, and boy we were not disappointed! We started off the day with 105 entrants, and after 10 full levels of play, we are down to our final 15 players. Our end of day chip leader is Gregory Brooks, who ended up bagging a whopping 1,294,000. He is followed closely by David Chiu, who has 891,000.

Brooks was involved in several big hands today, but none was bigger than the shocking elimination of bracelet winner and Day 1 chip leader Vanessa Selbst in 18th place. From late position, Selbst raised it up to 18,000 preflop and got a call from Steven Merrifield in the cutoff and Greg Brooks in the big blind. The flop came down {6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{3-Hearts} and Brooks bet out 38,000. Selbst in middle position then raised it to 104,000 and Merrifield folded. Brooks thought about it for a little while and then re-raised to 203,000. Selbst then re-raised the pot and Brooks called putting her all in.

Selbst turned over {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} for a trip threes with the ace kicker, and Brooks showed {k-}{k-}{9-}{3-Spades} for trip threes with a king kicker.

It all changed on the turn though when the {9-Clubs} fell and gave Brooks a full house. Selbst cringed as she realized her fate, and the river {7-Hearts} sent her to the rail in 18th place.

David Chiu also played a massive pot with Erick Lindgren that changed the course of the tournament. Lindgren limped under the gun, and Michael McDonald made it 36,000. David Chiu called, as did Lindgren. The flop came {2-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{q-Spades}, and Chiu immediately fired out four green chips, a 100,000 bet. Lindgren thought for about 15 seconds before announcing "raise the pot." McDonald quickly got out of the way, and it went back to Chiu. Chiu went in the tank for about a minute, and found out that Lindgren barely had him covered. Finally, Chiu started to slide his stack in the middle, saying "well I know you have the straight flush outs Erick cause I have top set." Erick called, and sure enough, Chiu was right.

Lindgren: {k-Spades}{a-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}
Chiu: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}

The turn brought the {3-Spades}, giving Lindgren the flush, but he still had to avoid the board pairing. Well he couldn't, as it came the {10-Clubs} . Chiu collected the pot, upping his stack to over 1 million, while Lindgren was crippled, then eliminated on the next hand.

Brooks and Chiu aren’t the only big names left. In fact, a majority of the players left are household names, including David Ulliot, Michael McDonald, Peter Jetten, Jason Mercier, Chris Moorman, and Jared Bleznick.
Some big names who fell short of the money were Shaun Deeb, Brian Rast, Praz Bansi, Josh Arieh, and Joe Hachem. Meanwhile, the likes of Joseph Cheong, Layne Flack, Isaac Baron, Emil Patel, and Jeff Lisandro all cashed, but didn’t make it to Day 3.

The 15 remaining players will return tomorrow at 2:30 local time to hopefully play down to a winner. Will Gregory Brooks, the winner of the 2011 LA Poker Classic, complete the second leg of the coveted triple crown in four months’ time? Will Jason Mercier or David Ulliot get their second bracelet? Or David Chiu his fifth? Or will one of the relative unknowns top this start studded final day. Tune in tomorrow as Pokernews will be providing you with all of the action as we find out who the next bracelet winner will be!

Blez

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante

On a flop that read {J-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, Jared Bleznick checked to Hans Winzeler who opened for 35,000. Bleznick called, then did the same after Winzeler's bet of 63,000 on the turn of the {5-Spades} before both players checked the river {3-Hearts}.

Bleznick showed {J-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Spades} and that was good enough to take down the pot. With that, Bleznick is now up to around 675,000 while Winzeler is down to 292,000.

Tom Dwan Eliminated in 16th Place ($23,519)

Tom Dwan
Tom Dwan

Everyone who had bracelet bets with Tom Dwan can all take a deep breath, as Dwan has just been eliminated. Dwan was down to his last 100,000 when he raised to 35,000 in the cutoff. Jason Mercier was next to act, and he made it 67,000 on the button. The blinds folded, and Dwan called. Dwan then bet his last 44,000 before the flop came, and Mercier called in the dark. The flop came {4-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}, and as Dwan would soon find out, that would nearly seal his fate.

Dwan: {3-Spades}{7-Clubs}{10-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Mercier: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{4-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

Mercier had flopped a set of aces, and Dwan was drawing very thing. The turn brought the {8-Diamonds}, and Dwan was drawing dead to Mercier's flush. The river came the {k-Hearts}, and Mercier collected the bounty, while Dwan headed for the exit.

Brooks On Broadway

We caught a heads up flop between Gregory Brooks and Steven Merrifield that read {a-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. Merrifield checked, and Brooks bet out 28,000. Merrifield called, then checked again when the {j-Clubs} hit the turn. This time, Brooks bet out 66,000, and Merrifield tanked for a minute before calling again. Merrifield checked for a third time when the {4-Spades} hit the river, and Brooks methodically put together a bet of 141,000, which was about half of Merrifield's stack. He tanked for a couple minute, before sliding in the call. Brooks showed {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{5-Spades} for a broadway straight, and Merrifield flashed the {10-Clubs}{10-Spades} before mucking.

Lindgren Crippled By Chiu, Eliminated in 17th Place ($23,519)

Erick Lindgren
Erick Lindgren

Sometimes in poker, you hear the express, "the hands played themselves." Well there is no greater example of that then what we just saw in a huge hand between David Chiu and Erick Lindgren.

Lindgren: {k-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{a-Spades}
Chiu: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}

The turn brought the {3-Spades}, giving Lindgren the flush, but he still had to avoid the board pairing. Well he couldn't, as it came the {10-Clubs}. Chiu collected the pot, upping his stack to over 1 million, while Lindgren was knocked down to just 15,000.

On the next hand, Lindgren shoved all in and got a call from David Callaghan, Joseph Ressler, and Michael McDonald. The board ran out {4-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}, and while Ressler was the only player left to get to showdown with Lindgren. Lindgren showed {k-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}, but Ressler showed {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{j-}{x-} for the nut flush, eliminated Lindgren.
