Rodriguez Leads Final 24: Karamalikis, Sahamies & Juanda in Contention

On Thursday, the 2012 PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event continued as 61 players returned to play down to the final 24. After just over three levels of play, Samuel Rodriguez finished atop the chip counts with 5,330,000.

Day 4 kicked off with a bang when short-stacked Team PokerStars Pro Matthias De Meulder got all in preflop with {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs} and was racing against the {3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} of Felix Kretchmann. The {6-Hearts}{K-Spades}{10-Spades} flop didn't hit De Meulder directly, but it did give him an added gut-shot straight draw to go with his overs. The {K-Hearts} turn gave the Belgian counterfeits outs as well, but the {8-Hearts} river blanked. With that, De Meulder exited the tournament floor and left Fatima Moreira de Melo as the last Team PokerStars Pros remaining.

Over the next few hours the field began to shrink as players like Yuri Gulyy (57th-€14,150), Kevin Weiland (56th-€16,800), Konstantin Puchkov (48th-€16,800), Andrey Zaichenko (45th-€16,800) and Zimnan Ziyard (44th-€16,800) all made their way to the payout desk.

In Level 21, Jonathan “xMONSTERxDONGx” Karamalikis became the new chip leader and the first to break the two million mark. It happened when a played opened to 25,000, Karamalikis three-bet to 65,000 from the small blind, and Kretchmann four-bet to 150,000 from the big. The original raiser folded, Karamalikis five-bet to 275,000, a call ensued and the flop fell {q-Spades}{6-Hearts}{9-Spades}. Karamalikis continued for 340,000 and then called all-in when his German opponent shoved.

Showdown
Karamalikis: {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Kretchmann: {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

The board ran out {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} and Karamalikis doubled to 2.65 million. Kretchmann was eliminated a few hands later in 39th place for €20,000.

Others to fall toward midday were Leo Margets (42nd-€16,800), Daniel Rudd (36th-€20,000), Guy Thomas (33rd-€20,000), Konstantin Streletskiy (29th-€24,650), Anatoly Gurtavoy (28th-€24,650), and Ilan Boujenah (25th-€24,650).

While 37 failed to survive the day, 24 did. Among them are , sport star de Melo; online poker legend Ilari “Ilari FIN” Sahamies; five-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner John Juanda; Day 1a chip leader Aku Joentausta; Season 7 EPT Prague winner Roberto Romanello; and the start-of-the-day chip leader Antonin Duda.

Juanda Busts Boujenah to End Play

Ilan Boujenah has been eliminated by John Juanda to end play for today.

The action folded around to him in the small blind and he moved all in for 255,000. Junda took his time and called with {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}. Boujenah seemed surprised Juanda took so long to call with his hand. He was in bad shape with {k-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} and said, "Get me luck, once!"

The {9-Clubs}{4-Spades}{6-Diamonds} flop didn't help him but the {9-Diamonds} turn offered hop.

"Ooh, a six will be nice!" said Boujenah.

It wasn't to be though as the river came {7-Spades}. With that, play has come to an end here on Day 4. Stay tuned for chip counts, the new seat draw, and a full recap.

Hoodoo you think you are?

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

It is one of the European Poker Tour's most enduring mysteries that no one has ever won two main events. But why is this so? In the first of a two-part investigation, PokerStars Blog takes a close look at the hoodoo and tries to get some answers. Warning: includes a random number generator and an engineer.

1 Down 1 To Go

Antonin Duda
Antonin Duda

There's been some preflop betting action going on and according to our sources Farid Chati four-bet on the button for around 300,000 which was more than half of his stack. Antonin Duda went all-in from the hijack seat and Chati called.

Showdown
Farid Chati: {K-Clubs} {K-Hearts}
Antonin Duda: {A-Diamonds} {A-Clubs}

Chati's kings were dominated by Duda's aces and he needed the board to go his way in order to survive. Unfortunately for Chati the board blanked {5-Diamonds} {2-Spades} {8-Spades} {6-Hearts} {J-Clubs} eliminating him from the tournament in 26th place for €24,650.

With 25 players still left in the field we only have to lose one to end Day 4 of the 2012 EPT Barcelona Main Event.

Anaras Beats Aku

Anaras Alekberovas

With around 81,000 already in the pot and {8-Clubs} {K-Spades} {8-Diamonds} on the board Lithuanian player Anaras Alekberovas bet 25,000 on the button and the Finn Aku Joentausta check-called from the small blind.

The dealer opened {2-Diamonds} on the turn and Joentausta lead for 41,000 and the Lithuanian made the call. The {7-Hearts} on the river was followed by the 100,000 bet from Joentausta and after thinking about it for a while, Alekberovas made the call.

The Lithuanian flipped {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs} for a pair of kings, ace kicker and that was enough to beat Joentausta's {K-} {J-}.
