WSOP Updates - Event #11, $5,000 Seven Card Stud - Oppenheim Overtakes Ivey as Final Table Set

The second day of Event #11, $5,000 Seven Card Stud, promised an increase in both action and pace of knockouts. 110 of the 180 entrants were still alive starting Day Two, tightly packed behind early leader Jacob Fernandez. Fernandez would be the first player to reach 100,000 in chips during the day but ran into tougher going later on and exited short of the money, paid to the top 24.

Fernandez had plenty of company, joining players such as Cyndy Violette, Daniel Negreanu, 'Miami' John Cernuto, Barry Greenstein, Howard Lederer, Humberto Brenes, John Juanda and John Hennigan. Johnny Chan was still alive when the money bubble broke, raising prospects of a possible 11th WSOP bracelet, but he fell in 18th position, leaving the career-bracelet tie with Phil Hellmuth and Doyle Brunson (at ten each) intact. Meanwhile, Phil Ivey moved into the lead in the middle stages of the day's play, as other names fell back or were busted.

This event's unfortunate bubble boy was Warren Coleman, who was bounced in 25th spot by Mike Wattel, not long before Chan's exit. Wattel, though, found himself in the opposite spot of the next bubble situation, that of the eight-player final table. Wattel held two pairs on fourth street — eights and nines — at the same moment Theo Jorgensen found trips, and the all-in Wattel couldn't find the four-outer he needed to stay alive. This allowed the short-stacked Marco Traniello to slide into the last seat at today's final table; Traniello battled for more than an hour with just a handful of chips and brings a meager 30,000 into today's action.

Traniello was among several shorter-stacked players jockeying for a seat at the final table, much to David Oppenheim's advantage. Oppenheim made a late surge to overtake Ivey as the chip leader and kept pounding away at the antes and bring-ins, eventually accumulating a third of all the chips in play.
