Event #29, $1,500 Razz, saw a field of 341 players trying to make the 'worst' hands as measured against the standards of other poker variants, dealt seven-card-stud style. It was the game's debut at this year's WSOP, excepting as segments within several preceding H.O.R.S.E. events. Among the players entered here were Mel Judah, Paul 'Eskimo' Clark, Davidson Matthew, Dutch Boyd, David Sklansky, Ted Forrest, Mike Wattel, Bill Edler, Marco Traniello, Cyndy Violette, Clonie Gowen, Chris 'Armenian Express' Grigorian, Men 'The Master' Nguyen, Darrell Dicken, Jennifer Harman, C.K. Hua, Tony G, Marcel Luske, Richard Brodie, Brandon Cantu, Barry Greenstein, James Van Alstyne, Chris Reslock, Vanessa Rousso, Jeffrey Lisandro, Humberto Brenes, Eric 'E-Fro' Froehlich, Chip Jett, Berry Johnston, Barny Boatman, Mickey Appleman, Doyle Brunson, Eli Elezra and Shirley Rosario. Matthew, Elezra, Brunson, Boyd, Luske and Tony G would be among the day's early knockouts.
The star-heavy entry list created several high-powered matchups, including one featuring cash-game killer Chau Giang, Mark Vos, Hua and Tom Schneider. Another offered Jett, Annie Duke and Max Pescatori, while Mark Seif, Cyndy Violette and Chad Brown battled at a third.
Mike Dreyer finished Day One play with 39,200 chips, nearly 15,000 ahead of second-place Steve Sung. 140 players survived into Day Two play, with the overnight leader board as follows:
