AGA Spends $400,000 on Q3 Lobbying
The American Gaming Association's transition toward a public stance favoring online gambling received public confirmation this past week with the announcement that the lobbying firm spent up to $400,000 in the fiscal third quarter of 2008 on federal efforts surrounding online gambling. The AGA, which represents major American land-based casino interests, continues to throw the majority of its support behind the study proposed by Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV), which calls for a detailed examination of Internet gambling. Berkley's H.R. 2140 measure includes the call for a cost/benefits analysis of the online industry as a whole.
Peter 'Zupp' Jepsen signs with Ladbrokes
Leading European site Ladbrokes picked up another major poker name with the announcement that it had signed Peter "Zupp" Jepsen to an endorsement contract. Jepsen, one of Denmark's most prominent players, first shot to fame by winning the 2007 EPT Polish Open for more than $423,000. Said Ladbrokes on the signing, "Peter is one of the best online poker players in Europe and has also proven that he is a good player in live tournaments after his EPT win in Warsaw last year."
Microgaming Buys 3-D Technology Firm
Online software provider Microgaming continued its expansion into future online-gaming technologies with its recent purchase of Playwize 3D software. Playwize's 3-D setting allows players to customize their online avatars amid what a release describes as "hundreds of different game combinations, such as Texas Hold 'Em, Omaha, Five Card Stud and Seven Card Stud." Microgaming CEO Roger Raatgever stated that the acquisition will eventually allow the 3D functionality to be enjoyed by Microgaming's thousands of players worldwide. The software already includes a complete poker tutorial and a practice mode with "as you play" advice.
