2014 World Series of Poker Day 22: Boyd Wins Third Bracelet, Buchman Wins Second

Another thrilling day at the 2014 World Series of Poker on Tuesday was punctuated by two players adding further gold to their WSOP bracelet collections, with Dutch Boyd picking up his third career title in Event #33: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em and Eric Buchman grabbing a second bracelet in Event #34: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud.

Here’s a recap of both players’ victories as well as what happened in the other four events in action on Tuesday.

Event #33: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em

After entering the final day third in chips of the final 10, Dutch Boyd emerged as the champion of Event #33, topping a total field of 1,688 to earn a $288,744 first prize.

Since his memorable 12th-place finish in the 2003 WSOP Main Event, Boyd has now collected nearly 30 WSOP cashes and three bracelets, his first two wins coming in 2006 in 2010, both in $2,500 six-handed NLHE events.

Following the early elimination of David Olmsted in 10th on Tuesday, the official final table was set with start-of-Day-3 leader Will Givens still in front and Boyd in second position in the counts. The shorter stacks soon were eliminated, among them the Frenchman Gabriel Nassif in eighth and Vinny Pahuja in seventh. A short while later Pok Kim was knocked out in fifth, the best-finishing woman in Event #33.

Givens was next eliminated in fourth by Paul Cogliano. Boyd’s A♠9♠ then stood up against Cogliano’s 7♦6♦ to eliminate the latter in third, and just Boyd and Steven Norden remained.

Boyd had a small lead over Norden to begin heads-up play, but soon began to widen the gap and on the 16th hand between the pair called a three-bet by Norden to see a 3♠7♦3♥ flop. Both checked, then following the A♣ turn Norden bet and Boyd called.

The river brought the 6♥ and an all-in shove by Norden, and after a short bit of deliberation Boyd called to show A♥4♣ for aces and treys. His hand was best as Norden tabled K♣5♣, and Boyd had secured his third WSOP title.

Event #33: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em Final Table Results

Event #34: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud

Meanwhile just six players returned for the final day of Event #34, with Aleksandr Denisov coming back to a big stack relative to his five opponents although all six players had relatively little left with which to work.

While Denisov would outlast Nabih Helmi (sixth), Bryn Kenney (fifth), and his nearest challenger to start the day William Thompson (fourth), two of the short stacks — Buchman and Alex Kravchenko — would manage to chip up to challenge Denisov in the counts.

Then Buchman would knock out Denisov in third in a hand that saw Buchman draw a set of jacks by fifth street while Denisov had picked up two pair. Having committed the last of his chips, his final two cards didn’t improve Denisov’s hand and they were down to two.

Not only were both Buchman and Kravchenko seeking second career WSOP bracelets, but both happened to have finished fourth in the WSOP Main Event before, with Kravchenko doing so in 2007 and Buchman in 2009.

Buchman had the lead versus Kravchenko to start their duel, and after winning some early pots had chipped the Team PokerStars Pro down into the danger zone. Finally Kravchenko was all in by fourth street showing (8♠7♣) / 6♥7♠ (a pair of sevens) to Buchman’s (J♠10♣) / 10♦6♠ (a pair of tens). Buchman then drew out to a full house, tens full of sixes, besting Kravchenko and giving Buchman the win.

Buchman now has a bracelet for each wrist after having won his first in 2010 in a $2,000 limit hold’em event.

Event #34: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Final Table Results

Event #35: $5,000 Eight-Handed No-Limit Hold’em

Day 2 saw 170 return from a starting group of 550 to Event #35: $5,000 Eight-Handed No-Limit Hold’em, and after another full day of play just 23 remained with three-time bracelet winner Jeff Madsen leading the counts and thus best positioned currently to fight for the event’s $633,341 first prize.

Start-of-day-2 chip leader Sam Trickett also still had a spot inside the top 10 when the players bagged up at night’s end along with Timo Pfutzenreuter and Josh Arieh.

The afternoon saw more than 100 players eliminated, then the cash bubble burst shortly after the dinner break. As the night wore on some of the notables cashing included Brent Wheeler (56th, $9,642), Chris Tryba (46th, $11,141), Michael Mizrachi (44th, $11,141), Steven Silverman (43rd, $11,141), Brock Parker (42nd, $11,141), Eric Baldwin (38th, $12,847), Jonathan Duhamel (37th, $12,847), Jim Collopy (33rd, $12,847), Aaron Massey (31st, $15,148), Dan O’Brien (28th, $15,148), Nick Schulman (26th, $15,148), and Giuseppe Pantaleo (25th, $15,148).

Here’s a look at the overnight top 10, with David Peters (currently in 11th position), Sylvain Loosli (12th), and Sam Stein (13th) sitting just outside this group while Eric Froehlich, Dan Smith, and Olivier Busquet will be among those returning to short stacks today.

Event #35: $5,000 Eight-Handed No-Limit Hold’em End of Day 2 Top 10 Chip Counts

Event #36: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball

Event #36: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball started with a relatively small field of 241 players, just 38 of whom made it through to yesterday’s second day of play.

That group then quickly played down to a final six-handed table shortly after the dinner break on Day 2, and the survivors decided to end proceedings there and return for a last day of play on Wednesday. Steven Wolansky will be returning to the chip lead when play resumes, with Joseph Cheong (in third position) among those against whom he’ll be competing for the bracelet and $89,483 first prize.

They reached the final 28 and the bursting of the money bubble in short order yesterday, after which Max Pescatori (27th, $2,837), Chino Rheem ($2,837), Robert Williamson III (23rd, $2,837), Mike Leah (22nd, $2,837), John Racener (21st, $3,471), and Eli Elezra (19th, $3,471) were among those heading to the payout desk.

Phil Hellmuth next fell in 18th to earn his record-extending 104th WSOP cash, with start-of-day-2 leader Brian Rast following shortly thereafter in 16th, both earning $3,471 for their finishes. Ali Eslami (11th, $5,371) and Scott Abrams (ninth, $5,371) were then part of the last wave of knockouts, with Scott Bohlman finishing seventh to bubble the final table and earn a $9,223 payday.

Event #36: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball End of Day 2 Chip Counts

Event #37: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha

One of two new events getting started on Tuesday was Event #37: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha which drew an unsurprisingly large field of 967 players, thereby building a $1,305,450 prize pool with $264,400 awaiting the winner.

The top 117 make the money in this one, and they managed to play down to 113 with the bubble bursting right at night’s end. Among those making the money was Humberto Brenes who notched his eighth cash of the 2014 WSOP and survived the night with a short stack.

Meanwhile at the top of the counts at the end of Day 1 sat Brandon Paster with Fabrice Soulier his nearest challenger and Erick Lindgren, Taylor Paur, and Raj Vohra also sporting top 10 counts.

Event #37: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha End of Day 1 Top 10 Chip Counts

Event #38: $10,000 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low Championship

The last event to finish after 3 a.m. Vegas time was the Event #38: $10,000 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low Championship that saw 134 players turn out to build a prize pool of $1,259,600 to be divided among the top 16 finishers with $352,696 reserved for the winner.

There are still 75 left after Day 1 of Event #38, with the Event #18: $10,000 Seven-Card Razz Championship winner George Danzer way out in front with 237,800 with Richard Sklar second (164,300) and Roland Israelashvili third (110,700).

There are many other familiar names in the overnight top 10 (see below), including that of Tournament Director Matt Savage.

Five bracelet events will be in play today at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. One — Event #36 — is scheduled to play down to a winner, while Event #35 is a four-day event that should be reaching a final table tonight. Meanwhile Events #37 and #38 will move through second days today, while one new event, Event #39: $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em gets things going at noon.
