2014 World Series of Poker Day 21: Joe Cada Collects 2nd Bracelet in $10K Six-Max; Shaffer Wins
Monday saw six events in action and two bracelets won at the 2014 World Series of Poker, including 2009 WSOP Main Event champion Joe Cada breaking through to win his second career bracelet in the Event #32: $10,000 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em Championship. Brett Shaffer also picked up a second career bracelet yesterday, earning his in Event #31: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em.
Event #31: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em
Brett Shaffer of Beloit, Kansas was the only one of 15 players left of a starting field of 1,631 returning for yesterday’s final day of play in Event #31 who had won a WSOP bracelet before, having won a $1,500 no-limit hold’em event last summer. After a long Day 3 he remained the only one of the group with WSOP gold, earning a second title after outlasting RJ Sullivan heads-up to win the bracelet and $418,435 first prize.
Early action on Monday saw the field trimmed to a final table of nine, with Michael Souza among the eliminated, going out in 11th to collect $23,317 and his 20th career WSOP cash.
The official final table began with Sullivan enjoying the chip lead and Shaffer among the shorter stacks. As the field further whittled down Shaffer began to collect chips while Peter Gould took the lead, then at four-handed Shaffer earned a big double-up through Gould with Q♠Q♣ versus the latter’s A♥Q♣ to move in front.
Gould next went out in fourth followed by Matt Stout’s exit in third, with Sullivan the responsible player in both instances. Stout’s finish marked a fourth WSOP final table and another near-miss for him in a career that includes more than 30 WSOP cashes.
Shaffer still had a small lead over Sullivan to start heads-up play, however, and on the 13th hand between them Sullivan was all in and at risk before the flop with A♥4♥ versus Shaffer’s A♠2♦. A deuce then fell on the flop, and Shaffer’s hand held to secure him his second $1,500 NLHE title in as many years.

Event #32: $10,000 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em Championship
Meanwhile Joe Cada managed to end a long streak of Main Event champions who have been unable to follow up their Main Event victories with another bracelet win, earning his second by topping a tough field of 264 in the $10,000 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em Championship.
Carlos Mortensen won his Main Event title in 2001, then followed it up with a second bracelet win a couple of years later, but no ME champ since then has managed to follow suit until last night. Indeed, all but one of the 12 Main Event champs since 2002 remain single-bracelet winners, the exception being 2012 champ Greg Merson who won an event prior to winning his Main Event title.
Since becoming the youngest-ever Main Event champion in 2009, Cada has come close to winning WSOP events before, having notched two fourth-place finishes a year ago to follow a runner-up finish in 2012. The Michigan-based pro finally broke through last night, however, and against one of the most talent-laden fields at the WSOP this summer.
Speaking of players seeking multiple bracelets, seven of the 13 players returning yesterday for the third and final day of Event #32 were former WSOP bracelet winners, and four of them would make the six-handed final table following the knockouts of Layne Flack (13th, $28,414), Scott Clements (11th, $36,975), and George Danzer (ninth, $49,061).
Cada had the chip lead to start the final table, but Jeremy Ausmus would grab it away after he knocked out Dario Sammartino to end the Italian’s run in sixth. Erick Lindgren followed in fifth, then Ausmus knocked out JC Tran in fourth and Cada eliminated start-of-day-3 chip leader Max Silver in third to set up heads-up play.
Ausmus had nearly 4.9 million to Cada’s stack of just over 3 million start their duel, and Ausmus would maintain the advantage for nearly 40 hands until Cada secured a huge double-up when his 8♠8♣ held in a race versus Ausmus’s A♦J♦. Five hands later Ausmus was all in with J♠J♦ versus Cada’s Q♥Q♣, and when the board brought Ausmus no help Cada had won the bracelet and $670,041 first prize.

Event #33: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em
In other action on Monday, Day 2 of Event #33: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em saw 115 players return from a starting group of 1,688, and they played all of the way down to just 10 players and a not-quite-final final table.
Will Givens of Colorado finished the night with the chip lead, with Steven Norden and Dutch Boyd his nearest challengers and Vinny Pahuja and Gabriel Nassif also still in the hunt for the $288,744 first prize.
Among those going relatively deep but missing today’s final day in Event #33 were Joe Ebanks (36th, $6,973), start-of-day-2 chip leader Gualter Salles (31st, $6,973), Dan Kelly (22nd, $8,446), Brad Libson (20th, $8,446), Justin Zaki (18th, $10,345), Martin Finger (17th, $10,345), Sean Jazayeri (16th, $10,345), and Faraz Jaka (11th, $16,088).

Event #34: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud
Just 60 returned from a starting field of 345 in Event #34: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud yesterday, and they managed to play all of the way down to a final table and then some as just six players will come back for today’s final day of play with the Russian Aleksandr Denisov enjoying the overnight chip lead.
Denisov will still have a difficult group with which to contend today that includes Bryn Kenney (currently in third position) and two former Main Event final tablists, Eric Buchman (in fourth) and Alex Kravchenko (in fifth), although each of those players will return to short stacks.
The top 40 finishers made the money in Event #34. Among the notables cashing prior to the final table being reached yesterday were Robert Mizrachi (38th, $2,524), Cyndy Violette (34th, $2,524), Marcel Luske (33rd, $2,524), Brian Hastings (32nd, $3,008), John D’Agostino (28th, $3,008), Vladimir Shchemelev (27th, $3,008), Mel Judah (26th, $3,008), Steven Albini (24th, $3,586), Phil Laak (19th, $3,586), Bryan Campanello (18th, $3,586), Sergey Rybachenko (12th, $6,716), Daniel Negreanu (10th, $8,504), and start-of-Day-2 chip leader Steve Sung ($8,504).
Meanwhile, making the final table but not the final day were David Prager (eighth, $10,921) and Mallory Smith (seventh, $14,228).

Event #35: $5,000 Eight-Handed No-Limit Hold’em
The first day of Event #35: $5,000 Eight-Handed No-Limit Hold’em saw a big field of 550 turn out, up from the 481 who played last year when the event was first introduced at the WSOP. That big field together created a $2,585,000 prize pool, to be divided among the top 56 finishers with $633,341 of it going to the winner.
After a long first day just 170 players remain with Sam Trickett ending the day on top of the counts as he hopes to make his first cash of the summer. Josh Arieh and Dan Smith occupy the next two spots in the overnight counts, with Jeff Madsen, Chris Tryba, Russell Crane, and Timo Pfutzenreuter among others building big stacks yesterday.

Event #36: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball
Finally Event #36: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball got going as well yesterday with 241 players taking part in this new WSOP event. With a total prize pool of $325,350 going to the top 28 finishers — $89,483 of which reserved for the winner — they got close to the cash last night as just 38 players remain with Brian Rast returning to the chip lead today as he seeks a third career WSOP bracelet.
Joseph Cheong, Bryce Yockey, and Ali Eslami are among those returning to top 10 stacks today, with 13-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth sitting just outside that group in 11th position.
