2012 ANZPT Melbourne Champion, Sam Razavi

Another day in Auckland sees us return to the SKYCITY Auckland Casino for Day 1b of the PokerStars.net Australia New Zealand Poker Tour Auckland Main Event!

Yesterday saw 66 hopefuls take to the felt with 26 surviving to the end of the night. 42 online qualifiers have already registered before the start of play today, and who knows exactly how high that number might climb as PokerStars and SKYCITY Auckland look to eclipse the previous day.

Some of the players already confirmed in attendance today will be Sam Razavi, winner of the 2012 PokerStars APPT Melbourne Main Event, as well as Mishel Anunu, Aaron Benton and Brett Chalhoub.

Play is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. NZST with the PokerNews Live Reporting Team providing continuous live coverage throughout the day as we look to find who the next ANZPT Auckland Champion is!

For now, we'll leave you with Lynn Gilmartin introducing the day, with a surprise visit from APPT President Danny McDonagh:

Shuffle Up and Deal

After some kind words towards the staff at SKYCITY Casino, Tournament Director Danny McDonagh has given the all clear to start the day by announcing "shuffle up and deal."

Who's Here?

We have recently spotted several players take their seats for the commencement of the tournament. Some of those include 2009 APPT Sydney Main Event Champion Aaron Benton, reigning Australia New Zealand Player of the Year Mishel Anunu, and Dean Francis who made three final tables at this year’s ANZPT Melbourne Event. Also in attendance are Charles Caris, Didier Guerin and Jason Lee.

Anunu Busy Early

We caught the action with the player under-the-gun limping into the pot. A player in middle position then raised to 350, before being met with a re-raise from Mishel Anunu to 850. The original player folded, and the raiser called.

The flop fell {A-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs}, and Anunu’s opponent checked. Anunu continued with a bet of 1,100 and was instantly met with a check-raise to 2,700. He thought for a moment, before making the call. The turn came the {5-Clubs} and both players checked, before the {J-Spades} dropped on the river.

Anunu sat and waited, as his opponent counted out a bet of 3,500, and threw it into the middle. He made the call and was happy to see his opponent table the {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a rivered pair, but was no match as Anunu tabled the {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}.

A great start to the reigning Australia New Zealand POTY, as he moves up to 28,000 in chips.

Lee Runs into Set

With the board reading {2-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}, the player in the small blind checked, as did Jason Lee from under-the-gun, before a player in middle position bet out 1,100. The small blind called, but Lee decided to check-raise, throwing out a bet of 3,200. The original raiser folded, and the small blind called.

Both players checked the {Q-Clubs} on the turn, before seeing the {J-Hearts} fall on the river. The small blind then check-called a bet of 3,600 from Lee, and after realizing his {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} had out-flopped Lee’s {A-Spades}{6-Spades}, jumped up, clapping his hands in celebration.

With that hand, Lee drops down to 11,700 in chips.

Anunu Loses it Back

An up-and-down first level has seen Mishel Anunu drop back down below starting stack. We caught the action on the river, with the board reading {3-Spades}{2-Spades}{10-Clubs}{7-Spades}{7-Clubs}. Anunu bet out 4,000 and was met with a very quick call. He tabled the {4-Clubs}{4-Hearts}, but it was no match against his opponent’s {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}.

Razavi Arrives

2012 ANZPT Melbourne Main Event Champion Sam Razavi recently took his seat over on Aaron Benton’s table, and was involved in a hand early.

On a flop reading {a-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, the two players in the blinds checked, before Razavi bet out 500 from middle position. Only the small blind called, and both players saw the {K-Spades} fall on the turn. This time the player in the small blind check-folded a bet of 1,350 from Razavi, who scooped in a nice little pot to start off proceedings!
