(James) Kim Halved

James Kim came into the day as one of the chip leaders but now finds his stack cut in half after an unlucky beat delivered by Espen Solaas. Solaas opened the preflop action by raising to 2,500 before Kim re-raised the button to 7,500. Solaas tanked for about a minute before moving all in. Kim quickly called, putting Solaas at risk.

Kim: {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds}
Solaas: {A-Clubs} {7-Spades}

Kim didn't seem pleased by the situation, as if he knew that the flop was going to fall {7-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {A-Spades}. There was no further help for Kim on the {6-Hearts} turn or {3-Clubs} river. He had to double up Solaas, cutting his own stack in half in the process.

Double Up or Go Home

Another of our movers early this afternoon is Ira Blumenthal. Blumenthal was looking to double up quickly or go home, eyeing a 4pm flight so that he could be back to Bangkok in time for his son's soccer game. Instead he doubled up first by catching pocket aces, and then by making two pair against an opponent's smaller two pair. As a result, Blumenthal is up to 43,000 in chips.

Andrew Scott Upswings

Andrew Scott eliminating everyone
Andrew Scott eliminating everyone
Andrew Scott has hit a nice upswing this morning.

First Scott got {10-?}{10-?} in against Alex Pagulayan's {A-?}{a-?}. A {10-?} spiked just in time for Scott to virtually double up and send Pagulayan to the rail.

Barely, a few hands later Scott found {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} against fellow Australian Michael Marvanek's {A-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}. All of the money went in preflop with the board running out {4-Hearts}{7-Spades}{5-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{q-Spades} to send Marvanek to an early exit.

Scott now has 87,000.

Slow Down!

We've already broken three tables in the early action. Since every table was full to start the day, that means that 27 players have been eliminated in the first 35 minutes. It's a pace that is sure to slow down shortly.

Fan Needs to Cool Off

Terry Fan
Terry Fan

We suspect, based on his post-hand comments, that Terry Fan is a little steamed after losing a recent pot on Table 2. He opened preflop from middle position for 2,300 and was called by one player in late position. Both men checked the flop, which came down {3-Spades} {Q-Spades} {2-Diamonds}. The turn was a repeater, {3-Clubs}, and drew a bet of 3,000 from Fan. His opponent min-raised to 6,000. Fan tanked for about a minute and then called.

The river was the {A-Clubs}. Fan checked, then quickly called his opponent's all in for 10,900, turning over {K-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} for a pair of queens in the process. His opponent showed {A-Hearts} {J-Diamonds}, having rivered a pair of aces to win the pot.

"Well played," said Fan, the sarcasm practically dripping off of his voice. "Well played."

Le Cracks a Smile?

Nam Le
Nam Le
The often-inscrutable Nam Le is playing on Table 8 this afternoon, three seats to the left of Celina Lin. He opened a pot from under the gun for 2,300 and was called only by the small blind. That player led out for 2,000 on a flop of {A-Spades} {7-Spades} {A-Diamonds}. Le studied his opponent, his own face remaining impassive, and then called.

The turn {10-Hearts} brought another 2,000-chip bet from the small blind. Again Le studied and called. On the river {10-Spades}, the small blind checked. Le bet 10,000 and drew a snap-muck from his opponent, who showed {4-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} as he mucked in disgust. We weren't sure, but we thought we might have seen Le crack the slightest of smiles as he dragged the pot.

Scott Runs The Bluff

On a flop of {10-Spades}{4-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} Andrew Scott fired out a bet from the small blind, only to be raised to 7,600 by the player in the big blind. Scott made the call and the {k-Spades} hit the turn.

Both players checked to the {10-Diamonds} river, where Scott moved all in covering the big blind, who had about 15,000 behind.

The big blind looked agonized, and eventually folded. Scott was all to happy to show the bluff flipping over just {8-Diamonds}{j-Spades} for a gutshot straight draw.

The Frenzy Subsides

Jack Ng
Jack Ng
With the initial chip-shoving frenzy of the first level of the day over, things calmed down enough to the point that we could check out some chip counts. The most surprising mover so far is Jack Ng, father of PokerStars Team Asia Pro Bryan Huang. Ng started the day with roughly 46,000 in chips and has almost tripled up, to 133,000.

We also noted that Nam Le managed to quietly double up and is now rocking roughly 74,000 chips.
