There Are Worse Fates

The board showed {3-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} {8-Clubs}. One player bet 900 before a second player raised all in to 3,350. Action was on Liz Lieu.

"You want me to gamble?" she asked the all-in player. He shrugged.

"It's gonna hurt if I suck out on you," said Lieu.

"I don't think he'll mind," another player quipped. Lieu eventually folded, but the original bettor made the call and tabled {4-Diamonds} {4-Hearts}. He was well behind the all-in player, who turned over {10-Spades} {8-Spades}. The river was the {3-Diamonds}.

"I did suck out on you," joked Lieu as the all-in player scooped the pot. "I had pocket threes. I made quads on the river."

Timoshenko's Timely Raise Wins Pot

On the last hand before the break, Yevgeniy Timoshenko picked up a few chips when he reraised one raiser and one caller to 2,000 from the small blind. Both players glanced at the tournament clock, saw that the tournament was going on break, and folded. One of them asked Timoshenko if he had A-K. Timoshenko just shrugged, collected the pot and left the table.

The Sins of the Father

Todd Brunson has exited the tournament on the heels of his father Doyle. With only 2,700 left, he pushed all in preflop with {A-Diamonds} {10-Clubs}. Simon Johansson called with pocket kings. Brunson couldn't catch the ace he needed. He's out.

Lieu Clips Chan

Six limpers took an interesting-looking flop of {2-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Hearts}. Johnny Chan was under the gun and led out with a bet of 500. Liz Lieu was the lone caller.

The turn brought the {10-Diamonds} and Chan fired out again, this time for 1,000. Lieu quickly raised it up, making it 2,500 to go. Chan thought for a few moments before making the call as a big pot was brewing.

The river landed the {7-Spades} and Chan checked to Lieu who instantly grabbed her entire stack and shoved it into the middle. Chan was left to cut down the chips and discovered it was 5,750 to make the call. He went into the tank for a long time before eventually giving up his hand as the pot was pushed to Lieu.

Lieu seems to have gotten the better of the battles of these two Asian poker pros, as she is now back to around 14,000 with Chan falling to 11,000.

Godfather Rubbed Out

Doyle Brunson eliminated

It was a short day for Doyle Brunson. With just 1,100 in chips remaining, he wound up all in against Chong Wing Cheong. The board showed {7-Clubs} {5-Spades} {4-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}. Chong tabled {K-Spades} {Q-Spades} for top pair; Brunson could only muster up {K-Hearts} {8-Hearts} for an inside straight draw. The river {7-Diamonds} didn't fill Brunson's straight. He rapped the table, said "Good hand" to Chong, then got up and slowly walked out of the tournament area.

Dichotomy

There are two tournaments playing out simultaneously here on the eighth floor of the StarWorld Casino: Day 1a of the APT Macau Main Event, and a super satellite for Day 1b. In the back half of the room, the Main Event players are relatively quiet, with play calming down and players settling in for the long grind now that the earliest of the bust-outs have occurred. Meanwhile the super satellite players have been whooping it up quite a bit in the front half of the room, seemingly having a great time. Ten of those players will be able to buy into Day 1b of the Main Event on the cheap.
