A Different Kind of Felt

One of the locals playing in today's tournament is none other than Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan. Pagulayan is better known around these parts for his skills on a different kind of felt-covered table -- a billiards table. Pagulayan is a champion nine-ball player, having competed in and won various nine-ball tournaments around the world.

Pagulayan is finding competing in poker tournament a big more difficult. His chip count currently stands at about 4,500 and hasn't been much over the starting stack all day.

Mabanta Rolling

Kwang Soo Lee and Franco Mabanta put in lots of chips preflop, but all of the action fizzled after that. There were 7,500 chips in the pot when Mabanta made a rolling motion with his hand to signal to the dealer that the pot was right and a flop could be taken. It came down all small cards, {3-Spades} {8-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds}. Mabanta led out for 4,800, a bet that sent Lee into the tank for two solid minutes. He had 13,500 behind, which seemed to suggest he could not flat call. He finally folded.

Mabanta is up to 23,000 in chips. Lee is down to 13,500.

Chino Chips Up

David "Chino" Rheem limped from the cutoff following two callers, including Curtis Chang. The blinds came along and checked it round to Chang, who led out for 1,700 on a flop of {Q-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}. Rheem made the call and the remaining players folded.

The turn fell the {K-Hearts} and Chang made it 1,800, putting Rheem into the tank for two minutes before he eventually splashed the pot with a raise to 6,300. Chang twisted and turned in his chair looking visibly distraught before calling the additional 4,500.

Chang led for 3,000 when the {K-Clubs} fell on the river, and as Rheem re-checked his cards he then slid a stack of yellow 1000-chips into the pot indicating a raise to 12,000. It took Chang some time but he eventually laid his hand down to see Rheem rake in the pot sending him to over 58,000 in chips.

Te Eliminated

"Ai-ya-yah!" exclaimed William Te Jr. He had check-raised a flop of {K-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} from 800 to 3,025, putting himself all in. Kwang Soo Lee made the call with {A-Spades} {A-Clubs}, a hand that had Te's {J-Spades} {10-Clubs} crushed. Te didn't get any help on the turn or river. He gave a heartfelt, "Nice hand" to Lee, shook his hand, and then grabbed his things and headed outside the tournament ropes.

Pedley Pedels Some Chips In

With an all-in and call ahead of him, Michael Pedley called 1,600 out of the big blind and two active players saw the flop of {J-Hearts}{9-Spades}{5-Spades}.

Pan Jun Kim led out for 2,400 and Pedley check-called before both players checked the turn of the {8-Diamonds}. The river fell the {K-Hearts} and Pedley threw out a bet of 4,500, putting Kim to a decision that sent him into the tank for several minutes.

Pedley tried as hard as possible to sneak a shove, or at least a call from Kim, but to no avail as Kim eventually passed, with Pedley tabling {Q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} for the nuts to scoop the pot and send a player to the rail.

Pedley is now sitting on a healthy 44,000 in chips and seems to enjoy the Asian Poker Tour after final tabling the 2008 Macau Main Event in 9th place.

Ron Kluber Update

Ron Kluber is hanging tough. He's attempting to slog his way through this field and is sitting behind roughly 16,000 chips after a recent four-way limped pot. The flop came down {5-Diamonds} {2-Spades} {J-Spades}. Kluber, in late position, raised to 3,700 after the small blind led out for 1,200. Everyone else folded.

Chris Back Runs Good!

Chris Back is running good today, having hit several slim draws. He did it again after raising preflop with pocket jacks. A player in late position moved all in and Back quickly called. His opponent showed down {A-?} {j-?}, but flopped an ace to take the lead in the hand. That was no problem for Back; he promptly turned the case jack for a set of jacks, then hung on when the river bricked out to send his opponent to the rail.

Back is up to 41,000 in chips.

A Drink Soon for Saab

"I hope the lady takes your chips," comments Asian Poker Tour CEO Chris Parker in the direction of David Saab.

"In a while," responds Sunshine Samson putting all three into a fit of laughter.

"So when we going drinking together? We haven't done that in ages . . . are you not allowed to drink anymore?" quips Saab.

"Well looking at your chip stack . . . probably very soon," laughs Parker as Saab looks to add to his 9,200-chip stack.
