Saab Sends One Home

Saab smashing it up with the Hammer!
Saab smashing it up with the Hammer!
Catching the action on the flop with around 2,000 in the middle, a player led 4,000 into a board reading {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. David Saab moved all in and the player called.

Saab: {8-Hearts}{8-Spades}
Opponent: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}

"I have heaps of outs." quipped Saab, and one of them fell when the {9-Hearts} came on the turn and {6-Diamonds} landed on the river to see Saab send his opponent to the rail.

"You broke the rock," stated a fellow tablemate. "I love breaking rocks . . . call me the hammer!" stated the 2008 Asian Poker Tour Manila champion as he climbed to over 21,000 in chips.

The Numbers

We have a final count of entrants in today's field. 186 players put up the entry fee to play today. When combined with the 75 from yesterday, the total for the tournament is 262, creating a prize pool of $635,500. That's down slightly from last year's total of 316, but ever since September poker tournaments across the world are off slightly from last year's numbers due to the sour economy.

We don't have the official prize breakdown yet, but as soon as we do it will go into the Prizepool and Payouts page.

Lieu Doubles

Lieu and Pedley in action
Lieu and Pedley in action
Liz Lieu limped under the gun and it was folded round to Richard Mari in the small blind, who called another 100, and Michael Pedley who checked his option.

On a flop of {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{Q-Spades} Mari and Lieu traded five-raises with each other before Lieu eventually called Mari's all-in for her last 8,375.

Mari: {5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}
Lieu: {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

Another heart would not land on the board, but the {4-Diamonds} on the turn and {9-Clubs} on the river would see Lieu double to over 22,000, as Mari was left crippled with only 150 in chips.

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!

The Aussie contingent is busy out on the tables.

Nik Lackovic moved his shortened stack of 4,700 chips into the middle on a flop of {4-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} {2-Spades} after his lone opponent opened for 1,500. He induced a fold, and chipped up to about 7,500.

One table over, Michael Pedley was involved in a hand. On a board of {J-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {K-Clubs}, his opponent peeked back at his cards. "How many clubs do you have?" Pedley asked.

"He only needs one now, said tablemate Liz Lieu when the {A-Clubs} hit the turn. Both players checked. Pedley's opponent made a large bet when the {4-Clubs} hit the river to make a board flush, but Pedley wasn't fooled. He folded {K-Spades} {4-Spades}.

"Does two pair beat a flush in Australia?" Lieu asked. Pedley, still sitting behind 15,200 in chips, answered in the negative.

Ivan Tan Slowly Chipping Up

Ivan Tan
Ivan Tan
Singapore-based player Ivan Tan is playing his usual quiet game today. Tan has an innate ability to chip up through a series of small pots without ever putting his entire chip stack at risk. We haven't seen Tan in any big pots yet today, but he has managed to increase his stack from the starting 10,000 to 16,000.

A recent hand provides an excellent example of how Tan does it. He raised from middle position to 575 and was called by Liz Lieu on the button and by the small blind. The small blind checked a flop of {10-Clubs} {A-Hearts} {4-Clubs} to Tan. He bet 1,250 and took down the pot when both opponents folded.

Rheem Hits Chip Lead

David "Chino" Rheem opened to 500 from middle position and was called out of the blinds.

On a flop of {K-Clubs}{6-Spades}{K-Spades} it was checked to Rheem who led out for 400. His opponent then followed with a check-raise to 800, and once it was back on Rheem he reraised to 2,000 total, forcing a fold from his opponent.

As Rheem raked in the pot he moved to tournament chip leader with a little over 28,000 in chips.

Quinn Do Eliminated

Do can't do today
Do can't do today
Poker Pack member Quinn Do has just been eliminated from the tournament in a three-way all-in. Do was holding {Q-?}{Q-?}, another player held {K-?}{K-?}, and Peter Berger held {A-?}{A-?}.

The board brought no help for either player to see Berger eliminate both as he moves to over 20,000 in chips.

Wu Still Fighting

Raymond Wu hasn't found the going to be particularly easy in the first half of the day. He found himself in a three-way pot with Steve Sung and one other player. Sung folded to Wu's bet on a flop of {7-Diamonds} {3-Spades} {8-Clubs}, but the other player called.

The turn {2-Diamonds} was checked through, bringing Wu and his opponent to the river {6-Hearts}. Wu bet 700. His opponent said, "I think we have the same cards," then called. Wu turned over {8-Diamonds} {5-Hearts}. It was the winner, boosting his chip count to 6,000.
