Day 2 Soon to Begin

Chip leader Dean Blatt is all smiles
Chip leader Dean Blatt is all smiles
A champion will be crowned today as the first event of the 2009 Aussie Millions Poker Championship comes to its conclusion. This two-day event attracted 731 runners across two Day 1 flights. 110 of them will return the felt today to chase the AU$150,000 first prize; 72 are guaranteed at least AU$2,193, almost double the AU$1,100 buy-in.

When all of the chip bags were logged last night, Dean Blatt emerged as the far and away chip leader with 145,300. No other player has more than 100,000 chips, making Blatt an early favorite to make the final table. This is no-limit hold'em, however. As evidenced by Alexandre Gomes' stunning exit from the 2009 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure tournament just a few hours ago, anything can happen.

Play kicks off in one hour. PokerNews will be there, from the first flop to the last river.

Tables of Death

As we commence Day 2 of the opening event of the 2009 Aussie Millions, a couple of interesting tables have emerged from the overnight redraw.

Table 24 caught our attention as a table to watch today featuring Steve Goldwater, Patrick Fletcher, David Saab, James Potter, Martin Cardno and a short-stacked Sam Khouiss. Expect plenty of fireworks and chatter from this table!

Meanwhile Table 31 is looking promising as it features James Broom, Mel Judah, Petar Lackovic, Emad Tahtouh and PokerNetwork Young Gun of the Month, Ben Delaney.

Rochford Continues Where He Left Off

Overnight Paul Rochford held the second-biggest chip stack in the tournament and he just increased that by eliminating the short-stacked Manuel Hansimikali.

Hansimikali moved all in from under the gun for his last 10,200 with {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} and Rochford made the call, tabling {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}.

The board of {2-Spades}{A-Spades}{J-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} paired Rochford to send Hansimikali to an early exit. Rochford is now up to 115,000.

Chrisanthopoulos Moving Up

Michael Chrisanthopoulos opened with a raise from middle position to 5,500, with Samuel Gerber making the call. Igor Banjac called off his last 4,400 in the big blind and the players went to a flop of {3-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}.

The two live players checked and the {10-Hearts} fell on the turn. Chrisanthopoulos checked and Gerber bet 7,000. Chrisanthopoulos then check-raised all in and Gerber called!

Gerber: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}
Banjac: {Q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}
Chrisanthopoulos: {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

While Gerber and Banjac had flopped trips, Chrisanthopoulos had spiked a ten on the turn to make a full house! The river bricked the {5-Clubs} and Chrisanthopoulos more than doubles up, sending Banjac to the exit.

Lights... Camera... Action!

The shortest stacks have wasted no time mixing it up this afternoon. Eleven players have already busted and several others have doubled up. Sam Khouiss was one of the lucky ones; he moved all in preflop for roughly 20,000 over the top of an opening raise to 5,550 from Christian Heich. Heich snap-called with {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs} and was in an excellent position to eliminate Khouiss, who showed {A-Diamonds} {J-Spades}. Heich's 3-to-1 edge failed to hold as Khouiss hit top pair on a flop of {8-Spades} {J-Diamonds} {2-Hearts}. The turn {Q-Diamonds} and river {7-Clubs} allowed his pair of jacks to hold.

Khouiss now has about 42,000 chips. Heich is down to approximately 50,000.

Kroger Runs Into Rochford's Set

Michael Kroger has been eliminated after shoving his last chips in on a flop of {9-Spades}{7-Spades}{8-Diamonds}. Paul Rochford quickly called with top set holding {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} as Kroger was in trouble with his {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}.

The turn and river blanked out and Kroger was sent to the rail. Rochford is closing in on the tournament chip lead with 135,000 chips.

Sejnovski Wins Blind Battle With Harvey

In a battle of the blinds, the action had folded around to Haki Sejnovski in the small blind who raised to 8,000. Martin Harvey then moved all in from the big blind and Sejnovski made the call for his last 24,000 chips.

Sejnovski: {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Harvey: {3-Spades}{3-Clubs}

Sejnovski took down the pot when the board delivered {A-Spades}{2-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for a pair of nines to double up to 50,000. Harvey was down to close to the felt with only 1,100, but he managed to triple up the next hand to stay alive with around 3,000.
