Same Day, Different Feel

The Crown Poker Room today doesn't have quite the feel that it had yesterday. Things are much quieter, perhaps because of the fact that yesterday was the first day of the Main Event and perhaps because there is no AU$100K final table in the room today. While yesterday there was electricity in the air, the tone is more subdued today. It does not seem particularly more charged than any of the days of the preliminary events here at the 2009 Aussie Millions.

Nguyen Continues to Surge

Minh must win!
Minh must win!
Minh Nguyen is continuing to surge hard as we approach the dinner break.

Most recently, he eliminated a player when his {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades} was too strong on a {Q-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{2-Spades} board against {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}, with the board running out {5-Hearts} and {5-Spades}.

With his opponent on the rail, Nguyen raked in the pot taking him to over 72,000 in chips.

All I Need is to Fold Kings Against Aces a Few Times...

Nik Lackovic can lay down kings preflop
Nik Lackovic can lay down kings preflop
Nik Lackovic must have soul-reading skills beyond the means of the average poker player. Facing a newly-arrived opponent at his table who opened to 1,100 preflop, Lackovic proceeded to play back to 3,000.

The newcomer didn't flinch, and moved right back over the top all in for around 10,000 chips.

After some time in the tank, Lackovic looked over at his opponent and said, "I can't believe I'm going to lay this down."

After a little bit more playing with his cards in his hands, Lackovic open-mucked {k-?}{k-?}. Normally a newsworthy thing in itself, his opponent then opened {a-?}{a-?} clearly in awe of the massive fold by Lackovic.

Portaro Wins Round Two

Johnny Solomons opened to 1,100 and found two callers including Bruno Portaro.

The flop fell {8-Spades}{J-Hearts}{7-Spades} and Solomons led for 3,500 and only Portaro called. The turn landed the {2-Clubs} and Solomons' 9,100 bet was check-raised to 23,000 by Portaro.

Solomons sat in the tank for over two minutes before laying his hand down as he slipped to 30,000 while Portaro jumped back to 59,600 in chips.

Lots of Chips for Small Cards

Ivan Demidov
Ivan Demidov
Ivan Demidov has quietly amassed a small fortune of chips in today's tournament. His aggressive style backfired for him, however, in a recent hand after joining Harry Demetriou's table right along the rail.

After an early-position player opened to 775, action passed to Demidov in the small blind. He put in the second raise, to 2,250. His opponent, with position on Demidov, made the call. Demidov fired a continuation bet of 3,375 chips on the {8-Clubs} {6-Hearts} {8-Spades} flop and was again called. After that, he shut things down. Both players checked the {2-Spades} turn and the {10-Spades} river. Demidov tabled {A-?} {2-?} for a pair of deuces, but lost the pot when his opponent showed {5-Clubs} {6-Clubs}.

Demidov probably didn't mind the loss much. He's still sitting on roughly 65,000 in chips.

Berec Busted

Berec Quacks Out
Berec Quacks Out
Jozef Berec moved all in preflop with {2-Spades}{2-Hearts} and was called by his opponent holding {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}.

The board ran out {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{A-Hearts}{6-Spades} to see Berec hit the rail only a few hands before the dinner bell will be rung.

Fletcher Felted

Patrick Fletcher out
Patrick Fletcher out
Patrick Fletcher has been eliminated from the 2009 Aussie Millions Main Event.

After earlier taking a fairly sick bad beat, he found himself on the short stack and in need of doubling up. He took a shot holding {k-?}{q-?} on a {10-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{9-Clubs} flop and was called by an opponent holding {j-Clubs}{q-Spades}.

Needless to say things didn't get better for Fletcher, the {a-Clubs} turn and {4-Diamonds} river completing the board and sending Fletcher to the rail.

Tassie Devil Hunted to Extinction

Unfortunately Heath "Tassie Devil" Chick has gone the way of the Tasmanian Tiger, both now extinct.

In the final hand, Chick moved all in for 3,500 over an opponent who had opened from early position. It folded back to the under the gun player who made the call and tabled {a-Hearts}{q-Spades} racing with Chick's {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

The flop was all clear for the Devil coming {4-Hearts}{7-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, but the {q-Hearts} put the death knell on Chick who calmly rose from his seat before the {6-Clubs} hit the river.

Harry Demetriou Eliminated

Harry Demetriou has been eliminated from the tournament after a cold flop. Having called his opponent's preflop raise holding {6-?}{8-?}, Demetriou would have been delighted to see the {7-?}{6-?}{6-?} flop.

He led out 700, which is opponent then raised to 2,100. Demetriou moved all in over the top for a large amount of chips and his opponent snap called.

Demetriou was sick when his opponent tabled {7-?}{7-?} leaving him drawing to only the case {6-?} to win. It didn't happen the turn {j-?} and river {j-?} left him heading to the rail.
