Wong Runs Into Set

Jimmy Wong has joined the ranks of players who are under half of the starting stack. He reraised to 1,650 after an opponent opened in middle position for 500. That player made the call to a flop of {5-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {8-Hearts}, then led into Wong for 2,500. Wong called that bet.

The {4-Spades} hit the turn. Both players checked. On the river {J-Clubs}, Wong's opponent bet 5,500. Wong quickly called, but mucked his hand when he was shown {5-Spades} {5-Diamonds} for a set of fives. He's now down to about 10,000 in chips.

Wardak's Monster Draw Gets it Done

Saidal Wardak during the Bounty Event
Saidal Wardak during the Bounty Event
Winner of the $1,650 Bounty Event, Saidal Wardak will live to fight another day in the Main Event after he moved in on a monster draw and made it at the river.

On a flop of {6-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{q-Spades} Wardak holding {5-Hearts}{7-Hearts} on an up and down straight flush draw, moved in the last of his chips in, and found himself up against an opponent hold {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}.

The turn {2-Diamonds} wasn't the card Wardak needed, but the river {9-Clubs} would make him a straight, enough to double through to 15,000.

The Champ Departs!
The Champ Departs!

Perry Friedman limped from early position and with it folding round to Alexander Kostritsyn on the button he raised to 600 with Josh Malone making the call in the big blind as Friedman passed.

The flop fell down {8-Spades}{J-Spades}{6-Diamonds} and Malone led out for 1,600 and was immediately re-raised to 4,000 by Kostritsyn with Malone making the call. The turn fell the {4-Hearts} and following Malone's check, Kostritsyn led out with a bet of 6,550. Malone proceeded by shipping it all in putting Kostritsyn to a decision for his tournament life.

With only a few thousand left, Kostritsyn made the call tabling {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs} to be ahead of Malone's flush draw and overcard with {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}, but when the {4-Spades} on the river landed a flush for Malone, the defending champ was sent to the rail.

As he packed his belongings he swapped a kind few words with Michael Chrisanthopoulos and a long handshake before he exited the tournament floor.

Maya Gellar-Antonius and Sam Vakili chop it up

Maya Gellar-Antonius
Maya Gellar-Antonius
Our field reporter picked up the action with the flop showing:

{a-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {7-Spades}

And approximately 8,000 in the middle.

Maya was first to act and checked it over to Sam who led out for 2,300.
Maya responded with a check-raise to 4,900, which then prompted Sam to reraise all in for a healthy 16,300.

Maya called and both players exposed their cards:

Maya: {a-Diamonds} {k-Clubs}
Sam: {A-Clubs} {k-Spades}

With neither player holding a heart, the turn and river card were meaningless and this was going to be a split pot.

Maya Gellar-Antonius is better known for her association with poker superstar Patrick Antonius, they have been a couple since last year's WSOP.

Sorry ladies. Sorry lads too, as she is most certainly not hard on the eyes either.

Vengrin Rivers Quads

Matt Vengrin moving on up
Matt Vengrin moving on up
Shortly before the break Matt Vengrin moved up to 51,000 after a stroke of luck at the river.

Vengrin bet out 2,500 at a {j-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{8-Spades} flop and his opponent played back for 7,200. Vengrin made the call.

At the turn {9-Clubs} Vengrin's opponent jammed for 17,200 and he made the call, tabling middle set {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}, but his opponent had turned a straight with {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}.

"Repeat the board" shouted Vengrin as the dealer burned and turned. He duly complied by dropping the {j-Diamonds} to give Vengrin rivered quads to send his opponent to the rail.

Flopped Flush Holds for Marcos

Michael Marcos limped into the pot from the cutoff position, and then called a raise to 650 from Zhi Hong Ma. On a flop of {K-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds}, Marcos led out with an overbet of 2,100. Ma made the call.

The turn was the {Q-Clubs} and brought a bet of 6,000 chips from Marcos. Ma called again to the river, where the {8-Diamonds} came down. Both players checked, with Ma tabling {K-?} {9-?} for two pair. That was no good; Marcos showed {Q-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds} for the flush and the winner.

Roeg Eliminated

Team PokerNews player Nicky Roeg summed up his elimination from the tournament thusly: "Bad turn. Bad river." He took a three-way flop in an unraised pot of {5-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {3-Clubs}. He and Jeff Madsen both checked to the button player, who bet 550. Madsen check-raised that bet to 1,600. Only Roeg called.

The turn fell {J-Diamonds}. Madsen made it 3,500 to go and again Roeg called. On the river {A-Clubs}, Madsen moved all in. Roeg tanked for over a minute before calling and tabling {A-Hearts} {J-Hearts}. He flopped the nut flush draw and then made a running top two pair. The problem was that Madsen turned over the nuts, {4-Clubs} {6-Spades} to bounce Roeg from the tournament.

"Never go broke in an unraised pot?" Roeg queried us as he left the tournament area.
