The Shaping of a Champion

Tureniec has the biggest stack.
Tureniec has the biggest stack.
We've made it to Day 15 of the 2009 Aussie Millions Poker Championships. That means it's Day 4 of the Main Event. For the twenty-eight players remaining in the tournament, there's probably no more important day than this one. Their chances of making the final table will be made or broken during the day.

One player has a leg up on the rest of the field. Swede Michael Tureniec is the only player to start the day with more than a million chips. Will he have the right combination of luck, aggression and skill to make the final table? Two other players of Scandanavian origin also have big stacks. Annica Ivert, a Swedish-born player hailing from Japan, and Norwegian Annette Obrestad were one-two in chips at the start of Day 3. Each is in the top ten at the start of Day 4.

At the start of the Main Event, Joe Hachem threw down the challenge gauntlet to his fellow Aussies. "I think it's about time an Aussie took home the title," said Hachem. "Get your acts together!" Hachem is long departed, but several Aussies still remain in contention. Christopher Chronis leads them all with 862,000 chips, but someone else that you may have heard of is lurking in the middle of the pack: Grant Levy.

Today we play until seven remain, however long that takes. Play starts in twenty minutes.

Shuffle Up and Deal!

After a brief Aussie Millions promo on the big screen, Jonno Pittock let the players know we're in for a long day ahead before he uttered the immortal words "Shuffle Up and Deal!"

Aces, Aces, Everywhere!

The very first hand of the day, Grant Levy raised to 22,000 from under the gun. Michael Tureniec decided to try to show Levy who was boss by raising to 70,000. The table folded around to Levy who put in the third raise to 160,000. That was enough for Tureniec.

"Didn't expect that the first hand," said Levy. Someone else at the table asked him to show the bluff. Levy showed {A-Diamonds} {A-Spades}.

A few hands later, Stewart Scott was on the button and re-raised Sam Capra to 37,000 after Capra opened with a raise. Capra called, then laid his hand down on a flop of {8-Hearts} {7-Clubs} {4-Clubs} to a bet of 80,000 from Scott. Scott showed {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds}.

Lechich Folds Top Set

Tino Lechich, during Day 3 action
Tino Lechich, during Day 3 action
Rajkumar Ramakrishnan limped from under the gun and the action folded around to Tino Lechich, who raised to 26,000 from the small blind. Ramakrishnan made the call.

They saw a flop of {Q-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and Lechich checked to Ramakrishnan, who fired 28,000. Lechich made the call. The turn brought the {10-Hearts} and again Lechich checked to Ramakrishnan, who this time slid out 100,000. Lechich rocked back in his chair before making the call as a big pot was developed in the early goings.

The river landed a brick with the {4-Spades}. Lechich checked, and Ramakrishnan fired for a third time for 250,000. This represented most of Lechich's stack and he went into the tank.

"Did you miss your flush?" posed Lechich as he considered the make or break decision. He eventually gave it up and flashed {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} face up!

Ramakrishnan is now up over one million chips as Lechich slips to 350,000.

Scott Gets Three Streets of Value from Capra

Stewart Scott raised to 19,000 from middle position and Sam Capra made the call from the big blind.

The flop arrived {A-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} and Capra checked to Scott, who fired 25,000. Capra made a very quick call. The turn was the {2-Spades} and again Capra hastily check-called the 75,000 bet from Scott. The river brought the {J-Spades} and Capra checked for a third time to Scott, who fired a third barrel worth 120,000. Capra snap called, but mucked when Scott revealed {J-Clubs}{10-Spades} for a full house.

Scott is now up to 870,000 with Capra taking a dent to 520,000.

Tureniec Falls Back to Earth

So much for Michael Tureniec's huge chip lead. He was at the river of a {K-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds} {J-Clubs} {A-Spades} board and heads up with Peter Rho. Rho was first to act and made it 50,000 to go. Tureniec raised enough to put Rho all in, about 270,000 total. Rho tanked for several minutes before trusting his gut and made the call. Tureniec showed {A-?} {J-?} for a running two pair, but Rho had the only better two pair possible -- {A-Hearts} {K-Clubs}. He's up to 600,000, while Tureniec's chip lead is completely gone. He's now on roughly 700,000.

Lechich Hits Another Set, This Time with More Success

Tino Lechich raised to 22,000 from the cutoff and Natan Meylakh reraised to 82,000 from the button. The blinds folded and Lechich made the call.

The flop landed {Q-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} and Lechich checked to Meylakh in position, who fired 190,000. Lechich check-raised all in and Meylakh made the call.

Meylakh: {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}
Lechich: {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}

Meylakh had flopped top two pair, but Lechich held a set of fives for his second set of the day! The turn was the {8-Diamonds} and the river the {6-Spades}. Lechich doubled through to 805,000, leaving Meylakh short with only 61,000.

Chen Can't Get Away

Andrew Chen was in the big blind when Annica Ivert opened for 21,000 from the big blind. Chen called to see a flop of {K-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {9-Clubs}, where he check-called a bet of 30,000. The turn came {J-Diamonds}. Again Chen checked, and again Ivert bet. It was 50,000 chips to see the river. Chen made the call.

The river was not a club. It was the {6-Diamonds}. Chen checked a third time and Ivert settled on 93,000 as the right amount to bet. Chen tanked for a couple of minutes before finally calling. We never got to see his hand; as Ivert showed {10-Diamonds} {8-Spades} for the turned straight, which was a winning hand. She's up to roughly 900,000.
