Hansen Takes the Bridge at the Edge

Level 2 : 300/600, 0 ante

We saw Gus Hansen intently focused on a book instead of the poker action, and we couldn't help but wonder what he's reading. A quick over-the-shoulder look revealed that he's reading Bridge at the Edge by Boye Brogeland and David Bird.

Here's how Amazon describes the said book: "A fascinating 'over-the-shoulder' look at top-level bridge. While describing almost 200 deals that he played in World and European Championships, one of the world's best players discusses bidding and card play, as well as his approach to the mental side of the game. A fascinating glimpse into the thought processes of a champion bridge player, as well as a look at state-of-the-art bidding methods, some of which are described here for the first time."

It seems Mr. Hansen is more focused on improving his bridge game at the moment than keeping up with what's happening at his table.

Bloom's Firing Wins Him This One

Level 2 : 300/600, 0 ante

John Juanda checked the paired {J-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop. His opponent, Tony Bloom, bet 1,600. Juanda called.

The turn was the {9-Hearts}, and Juanda checked again. Bloom stayed on the gas with a bet of 3,100. Juanda wasted little time in making the call.

The river was the {8-Spades}, and Juanda checked. Bloom bet 9,000, and Juanda folded right away.

Yu vs. Gruissem

Action folded around to Philipp Gruissem on the button and he opened for 800. Jason Mercier folded the small blind, but Winfred Yu, who has a beautiful woman right behind him sweating the action from the rail, opted to push back from the big blind to the tune of 2,000.

Gruissem made the call and then took his time before calling a bet of 3,100 from Yu on the {9-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} flop. The latter then slowed down with a check on the {5-Spades} turn, and Gruissem seized the opportunity to bet 5,500. It got the job done as Yu relinquished the hand and went to his supporter on the rail for consolation.

Kurganov Pushes Out the Sydney's Pritchard

Jason Pritchard seems to be the dark horse of the tournament thus far, with numerous spectators on the rail wondering who exactly the guy in the sunglasses is.

Pritchard isn't your typical high roller. He hails from Sydney, so he's essentially playing on his home turf, and has just over today's buy-in in lifetime earnings ($105,684 to be exact). His best score to date was back in the 2010 Aussie Millions Poker Championship Main Event when he finished in 29th place for A$40,000.

In a recent hand, Jason Mercier opened for 1,200 from the hijack only to have Pritchard three-bet to 3,100 from the button. Igor Kurganov then opted for a four-bet to 9,000 from the small blind, Mercier folded, and Pritchard called, bringing about a flop of {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{4-Spades}. Kurganov continued for 8,000, Pritchard called, and the dealer burned and turned the {2-Hearts}.

Again Kurganov bet, this time 18,000, and Pritchard took his time before conceding the hand.

Trips for Robl

From under the gun, Martin Finger raised to 1,200. Andrew Robl called from the hijack seat, John Juanda called in the cutoff seat, and Dan Shak called from the big blind.

On the {K-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} flop, action checked through to Robl. He bet 3,000, and Juanda and Shak folded. Finger called.

The turn was the {6-Spades} to pair the board. Finger checked, and Robl checked back.

The river completed the board with the {A-Hearts}, and Finger led for 5,500. Robl tanked for a couple long minutes, then called with the {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} to beat Finger's {K-Diamonds}{10-Spades}.

A Genius28 Move

Gus Hansen opened for 1,300 under the gun and was met by a three-bet to 3,000 by Chris "Genius28" Lee from the button. The blinds folded, Hansen called, and the flop fell {7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{9-Clubs}. Hansen proceeded to check-call a bet of 4,200, and then both players checked the {4-Clubs} turn.

Hansen checked for a third time on the {4-Hearts} river, and Lee thought for about 30 seconds before betting 10,600. Hansen double checked his cards and then sent them to the dealer.

Despite that hand, Lee is still up above the starting stack, as is Hansen.

Two $100K Challenge Legends Square Off

Back in 2006, John Juanda topped a field of 10 players to win the A$100,000 Speed Poker Million Dollar Challenge right here at the Crown during the Australian Poker Championship (now called the Aussie Millions) to win A$1,000,000. It was a glorified Sit n’Go tournament featuring Phil Ivey (10th), Tony G (9th), Michael Sampoerna (8th), Ralph Burd (7th), Tony Bloom (6th), Barry Greenstein (5th), Mike Sexton (5th), Jason Gray (3rd) and Jeff Lisandro (2nd).

Speaking of Bloom, he’s had quite a bit of success here at the Aussie Millions. Back in 2004, he won the Main Event for A$426,500, and then won a ring in the A$1,500 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event a year later for A$24,650, not to mention his runner-up finish in the A$5,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em tournament for A$32,000 that same year. Then, in 2009, Bloom made his presence known in this very event by finishing as runner-up to David Steicke for A$600,000.

His $100,000 Challenge success continued in 2010 when he placed fourth for A$200,000, and then again in 2011 when he finished runner-up again, this time to Sam Trickett. That performance earned him A$975,000 and made him perhaps the most storied player in the $100,000 Challenge that has never claimed the title. Could this be his year?

In a recent hand (that happen just before the level went up) between Juanda and Bloom, who’re both receiving massages, the former opened for 1,600 from the button and the latter defended from the big blind. The {6-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{K-Clubs} flop saw Bloom check-call a bet of 2,400, and then he promptly checked the {8-Hearts} turn. Juanda took the opportunity to bet 6,300, but this time Bloom woke up with a check-raise to 17,500. Juanda gave up on the hand and Bloom was pushed the pot.

Kurganov Cruising on Table 19

Igor Kurganov has been on a roll over at Table 19 and appears to be the early chip leader.

We caught the action in a recent hand with 40,000 already in the pot and a board reading {6-Hearts}{4-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. Jurganov had just bet 16,000 from the small blind to put the pressure on Jason Mercier in the hijack. The latter thought for about 30 seconds, and then folded his cards. We didn't catch the juicy stuff, but it still gave us the chance to update you on both their stacks.
