Kanit Joins Late; Soars to the Lead in the 2018 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge

Level 9 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Mustapha Kanit

The 2018 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge kicked off one hour late with Sam Greenwood leading the line up at the start in the poker room of the Crown Casino. After nine levels of 40 minuteds each, a field of 16 entries including two re-entries emerged and only six players bagged up for the night. Fresh off a runner-up finish in Event 22 $5,000 6-Max, Mustapha Kanit jumped into the competition in the penultimate level of the night and went through the field like a wrecking ball to bag up 1,141,000.

Second in chips is Jan-Eric Schwippert with 853,000, who had to fire a second bullet and also already finished 2nd in the $25,000 Challenge and the $50,000 ANTON Challenge during the festival here in Melbourne. Fellow German high roller regular Christian Christner (719,000), Michael Lim (534,000), Kahle Burns (428,000) and Manig Loeser (306,000) all made it through in their first attempt.

Among those to bust were $8,000 Satellite winner Sam Higgs, Kazuhiko Yotsushika, Tsugunari Toma, Jack Salter, Dietrich Fast, Fedor Holz, Sam Greenwood and Claas Segebrecht.

The day kicked off with a bang after Sam Greenwood took all but three big blinds off Jan-Eric Schwippert when turning trips treys and Fedor Holz failed to get there with ace-six against the ace-ten of Kahle Burns. Sam Higgs won a big pot right after the action had kicked off but it all went downhill from there to see the Aussie bow out in level six.

Kazuhiko Yotsushika failed to get there with ace-ten suited versus pocket jacks and fellow countryman Tsugunari Toma's queen-ten suited ended up second best to the ace-trey of Dietrich Fast. The run good of Fast ended right there, though, and Mustapha Kanit doubled twice in quick succession through the German soon after sitting down in level eight.

Fast bowed out soon after and was joined on the rail by Fedor Holz on his second entry, who got it in with king-nine for a gutshot to see Jan-Eric Schwippert hold up with ace-jack for second pair, and Kanit then took care of Sam Greenwood with pocket aces versus top pair. Before bagging and tagging, Claas Segebrecht also ran out of chips and Kanit ended up as the only chip millionaire.

While the other table was waiting for the remaining eight players to merge, one more hand was being played over on table eight. On a flop of {9-Clubs}{4-Spades}{2-Clubs}, Sam Greenwood check-raised a bet of Mustapha Kanit to 70,000 and the Italian called to see the {3-Hearts} on the turn. Greenwood was first to act and made it 65,000 to go. Kanit moved all in and Greenwood called it off for his last 246,000.

Sam Greenwood: {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Mustapha Kanit: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}

The {Q-Clubs} river failed to improve Greenwood and he also joined the rail. Kahle Burns walked over to Kanit and said "you are a wrecking ball" while Kanit, who had just entered in the penultimate level of the day, moved up to five times the starting stack.

Schwippert Sends Holz to the Rail

Level 9 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Fedor Holz
Fedor Holz

Fedor Holz limped in and called a raise to 35,000 by Jan-Eric Schwippert in the big blind. On a flop of {Q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{3-Hearts}, Holz checked and subsequently check-raised from 20,000 to 48,000 in order to pick up a call from Schwippert. The {J-Diamonds} followed on the turn and Holz moved all in for 107,000, Schwippert called and both Germans tabled their cards.

Fedor Holz: {K-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Jan-Eric Schwippert: {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

Holz needed a king or ten to avoid elimination, but the blank {8-Diamonds} on the river brought no help to see Holz run out of chips for the second time today.

Fast Eliminated by Lim

Dietrich Fast
Dietrich Fast

Michael Lim limped in the small blind and Dietrich Fast three-bet all in for just under 80,000. Lim snap-called.

Dietrich Fast: {q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}
Michael Lim: {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Fast picked up more outs on the {5-Spades}{6-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop, but it was all for naught as the {j-Diamonds} and the {a-Spades} completed the runout, eliminating Fast.

Higgs Eliminated

Level 6 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Sam Higgs
Sam Higgs

Sam Higgs moved all in for 29,000 from middle position. Sam Greenwood just called in the cutoff before Dietrich Fast three-bet to around 400,000 from the button. The blinds folded and Greenwood called.

Dietrich Fast: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Sam Greenwood: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Sam Higgs: {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

Higgs had live cards, but the flop of {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{6-Diamonds} was all Fast, giving him a flush draw to eliminate both players. The turn {4-Spades} and river {10-Clubs} however failed to complete that draw. Higgs was eliminated, with the other two players chopping it up.

Holz Doubles With Quads; Busts After

Level 5 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Fedor Holz
Fedor Holz

Hand 1

Fedor Holz moved all in first to act and Sam Higgs went all in over the top from one seat over.

Fedor Holz: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Sam Higgs: {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

"That's fair game," Holz said and the board ran out {J-Clubs}{9-Spades}{6-Spades}{Q-Spades}{9-Diamonds} to give the German wonder kid quads in order to double up for 33,000.

Hand 2

Kahle Burns on the button moved all in against the two short stacks Holz in the small blind and Higgs in the big blind. Holz opted to call while Higgs folded.

Fedor Holz: {A-Clubs}{6-Hearts}
Kahle Burns: {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

The board of {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{J-Spades} ensured that the kicker played and Holz was eliminated on his first bullet.

Schwippert Left Short After Huge Pot

Level 1 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Jan-Eric Schwippert
Jan-Eric Schwippert

Sam Greenwood raised to 2,500 from middle position and Jan-Eric Schwippert three-bet to 9,000 from the button. Greenwood called.

The flop came {5-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{3-Clubs} and Greenwood check-called a bet of 7,500. The turn was the {3-Hearts} and Greenwood check-called another bet of 30,000.

The river was the {8-Diamonds}. Greenwood checked a third time and Schwippert bet 80,000. Greenwood then check-raised to 213,000. Schwippert took his time before calling.

Greenwood showed {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for trip threes and Schwippert mucked. The $25,000 Challenge winner now has around 3,000 chips behind.

Welcome to Day 1 of 2018 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge

2018 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge
2018 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge

Now in its 13th year, the Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge has handed out just over A$38m in prize money to some of the best players in the world, and the 2018 edition gets underway at 2:15pm local time here in Melbourne.

The tournament has been won by some of the biggest names in world poker. Inaugural winner John Juanda has garnered quite the poker resume since 2006, with the 2008 WSOPE and EPT 12 Barcelona among the highlights. Sam Trickett followed up his 2011 win by finishing runner-up in the $250,000 Challenge the same year, and winning it two years later.

Last year Nick Petrangelo took home the title after beating small field, densely packed with some of the greatest poker players in the world. Petrangelo beat Mike Watson and Fedor Holz into second and third respectively, and it will be interesting to see if any of these players will take to the felt this year.
