Robert Panitch on Day 2 of the 2014 WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open Main Event

A player in middle position opened for 4,400 and the folded around dutifully to Robert Panitch in the big blind. As anybody who has come to know "Uncle Krunk" during the last few years - as Panitch became a consistent tournament player capable of playing on the big stage against the game's best - he does not give up on anything easily.

So we weren't surprised Panitch announced a reraise while tossing out a 12,000 three-bet. His much younger opponent did not appear to be pleased after being played back at, but he flatted to take the {6-Clubs}{q-Spades}{9-Hearts} flop in position.

Position didn't matter for long though, as Panitch fired away with a 15,000 to force a quick fold. With the win Panitch neared the 350,000 mark one hour away from the dinner break.

Gerassi Getting Gabby

Level 13 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
David Gerassi is Back for More After Reaching a Final Table Earlier in the Series
David Gerassi is Back for More After Reaching a Final Table Earlier in the Series

David Gerassi is a talkative fellow no matter how he's running, as we've heard him relay the details of his wins and losses with relish, seeming to savor the details of a poker hand no matter if he won or lost.

On a recent pass through the room, Gerassi was kind enough to fill us in on the details of a recent hand that pushed him over 245,000 and padded an already large stack.

Gerassi told us that he held {A-Spades}{7-Spades} and called a 3,500 open to see the flop, which came down {k-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Spades}. With the nut flush draw, Gerassi pounded the pot and bet 6,000 after a check to him. When Gerassi's opponent flatted out of position, the turn came {2-Clubs} to increase Gerassi's selection of outs - as he could now spike a three to make the wheel straight.

The other player in the hand checked for a second time, and Gerassi made it 6,000 to play, only to see the man to his right shove all in for about 35,000 more.

The glee with which Gerassi told us that he "insta-called it with nothing" recalled the time another player told Gerassi he was "a sick, sick man," and it was obvious how his story would end.

"The... it was the eight of spades that come," Gerassi said with a laugh, letting us know that he is beginning to run like he did this past week while rampaging his way to a final table appearance.

Heartbreaker

David Gerassi Has Had Plenty to Smile About Here at the Borgata Winter Poker Open

We found the familiar sight of David Gerassi dragging a big pot his way, so we stopped by to investigate.

The gregarious Gerassi - who made a name for himself earlier in the series by dominating the latter stages of Event 8 despite his unconventional play - is no stranger to playing big pots with little more than a hope and a dream.

Against Cliff "JohnnyBax" Josephy though, Gerassi wasn't messing around. He told us he held {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts} when the flop brought three hearts on board. Holding the stone cold nuts, Gerassi managed to build a 40,000 pot with Josephy as the primary contributor, and just like he did during his who made a name for himself earlier in the series by dominating the latter stages of Event 8 despite his unconventional play - is no stranger to playing big pots with little more than a hope and a dream. Steve Gee bet 13,500 when his opponent checked to him on the end on a dangerous board: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}. The player thought for about two minutes before finally calling. Gee slowly turned over {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}, and his opponent mucked.

It's Getting Mighty Krunk in Here

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Bob Panitch spiked an unlikely out.
Bob Panitch spiked an unlikely out.

We found Robert Panitch calling an all-in shove from an opponent on a flop of {4-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{5-Spades}.

Panitch: {10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Opponent: {q-Spades}{10-Spades}

"Uncle Krunk" found himself miles behind with only two outs, but one materialized immediately on the {7-Hearts} turn. A {9-Hearts} river completed the board, and Panitch clapped before stacking his opponent's chips.

"You take some chances, sometimes you make 'em," Panitch said after Filippi commented about the unlikeliness of the win. "It coulda been a flush draw."

"It was a flush draw," Filippi said with a laugh.

The Best of it With the Worst

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
K.C. Nam on Day 2 of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open Main Event
K.C. Nam on Day 2 of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open Main Event

In many of the lively home games played on kitchen tables across America, players liven up the game by awarding a bounty to anyone who wins a pot after tabling deuce-seven. A one dollar chip or a free beer are the usual prizes pocketed for dragging a pot with the {2-}{7-}, but for K.C. Nam, a 110,000 chip pot and a chance at a life-changing six-figure score.

After an opponent opened for 2,600, Nam looked down to find the {2-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} in the hole. A holding that would ordinarily be mucked without a second thought was a weapon to be wielded for Nam, and rather than folding he three-bet to 7,600. His opponent flatted the reraise and the flop fell {j-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} to give Nam bottom pair, bottom kicker.

Nam then led into his opponent for a 15,000 wager, and after the other player called the turn card came {q-Spades} to pair the board and bring flush possibilities to bear.

Reading his opponent for a drawing hand, Nam went with his instinct and shoved all in for about 38,000, with his opponent rising from his chair to make the call. Nam was covered by his opponent's stack, so this all-in move was made with his tournament life on the line.

When the other player tabled {8-Spades}{9-Spades}, Nam discovered his read to be spot on, but he was still fading nearly half of the deck considering his opponent's array of outs. Any eight or nine would hit his overcards, any ten filled in the gutshot straight, any jack would double-pair the board to counterfeit Nam's pair of sevens, and of course a spade on the river would flush Nam's chances away. With many players at the table now standing in awe to await the river card's arrival, the dealer burned and turned.

River: {4-Diamonds}

"What is going on here?" asked one of Nam's tablemates as the river bricked off. "What just happened here?"

Nam's response to the sight of a safe river card was a pump of the fist and a quick "yes!" to congratulate himself. The other player took the loss like a pro and never said a word about playing the worst hand in poker, while Nam quietly stacked his new chips to put himself in strong position midway through the day.

Haugen May Be Leader

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Matt Haugen may be the chip leader.
Matt Haugen may be the chip leader.

Matt Haugen bet 4,000 after an opponent checked to him on a flop of {j-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}. The player, who was in the small blind, check-raised to 10,000. Haugen made the call, and the small blind pushed all in for about 36,000 on the {9-Diamonds} turn. Haugen once again called, this time after thinking for a few minutes.

Haugen: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Small blind: {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}

The small blind had been purely speculating on the flop, but turned a diamond flush draw and decided to try to force Haugen out. Unfortunately for him, Haugen wasn't folding his overpair, and a {7-Hearts} river meant Haugen got all of his opponent's chips.

Haugen has cleared the 400,000 mark, and he appears to be the chip leader.
