Ronny Johansen Cracks Aces to Stay Alive

Ronny Johansen moved all in from under the gun for roughly his last 26,500. Action folded around to Pier Paolo Ruscalla on the button and he cold called the raise. The blinds folded and the players showed:

Johansen: {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs}
Ruscalla: {A-Clubs} {A-Diamonds}

The flop was dramatic as it fell {J-Spades} {10-Hearts} {6-Spades}. Another player commented that they folded a pair of nines, thus turning Johansen's six-outer into a virtual four-outer. Nevertheless, he hit the turn squarely as it fell the {9-Spades} . The {5-Clubs} on the river was of no consequence Johansen doubled to just over 58,000.

When Shorties Attack

No, don't worry, the Oompa-Loompas haven't turned on Willy Wonka, I'm talking about the short stacks here in Barcelona. One of those is Fowzi Baroukh. With one player limping in the cutoff, he made it 11,000 from the small blind. After his foe called, both players saw a flop of {J-Spades}{2-Hearts}{4-Hearts}, where Baroukh led out for another 11,000. After much deliberation, his opponent made the fold, allowing Baroukh to collect the pot and recompile a now-50,000 stack.

Another short stack is heading in a similar direction, Michael Greco's start-of-the-day stack of 7,700 now reaching the dizzy nose-bleeding heights of 80,000.

Other short stacks, however, are finding life somewhat harder, as Petre Ionescu, Simone Coppari and Stavros Kalfas are all at the wrong end of the spectrum with 24,000, 17,000 and 24,000 respectively.

Simone Coppari Doubles Through Diogo Manuel Sampaio Pereira

Simone Coppari just picked up a clutch double-up when his {J-Clubs} {J-Spades} held up against the {A-Spades} {9-Diamonds} of Diogo Manuel Sampaio Pereira. The chips went in before the flop and, much to the delight of Coppari's cheering section, the board ran out {10-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} {6-Hearts} {K-Hearts} and Coppari's hooks were best. He doubled up his remaining 18,600 chips and now sits on just shy of 40,000.

British Invasion

Like a snake in the grass, the British players have been laying low for the majority of the tournament (well, the whole year, in fact), but have survived the flurry of recent exits and are now braced and ready to pounce. The following are still flying the flag of her Majesty the Queen, with the likes of Stephen Chidwick and Mazhar Nawab looking very dangerous indeed. And the "Honey Man" Albert Sapinao may ruffle a few feathers too.

Mazhar Nawab -- 140,000
Albert Sapiano -- 125,000
Stephen Chidwick -- 118,000
Michael Greco -- 80,000
Steve Jelinek -- 72,000
Mark Dalimore -- 53,000
Stuart Rutter -- 51,000
Stuart Taylor -- 38,000

Robert Mizrachi Eliminated

Robert Mizrachi got the rest of his chips in the middle before the flop, holding {9-Clubs} {9-Hearts} vs. Felipe Ramos' {8-Diamonds} {8-Spades}. Ramos spiked a set when the flop came down {J-Hearts} {8-Clubs} {4-Diamonds}, Mizrachi recoiling as if he'd been shot. The turn was the {Q-Clubs}, the river the {K-Diamonds} and the last Mizrachi standing hit the rail, just short of the money.

Mizrachi Gets Some Back

Robert Mizrachi
Robert Mizrachi
Just a few hours after losing a lot of chips to Felipe Ramos and his flush draw, Robert Mizrachi just got a few of them back. Dren Ukella opened for a raise to 4,000 from the cutoff seat and Ramos called from the button. A short-stacked Mizrachi wasted no time pushing his remaining 24,700 towards the center.

Ukella folded straight away, but Ramos went into the tank. He counted out the raise and then eyeballed his remaining stack. After a bit of deliberation, he pushed out the call. The players showed:

Ramos: {6-Clubs} {5-Clubs}
Mizrachi: {A-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds}

The board helped neither man as it came {K-Spades} {9-Spades} {2-Spades} {3-Spades} {Q-Clubs} and Mizrachi's ace-high was best. He scooped up the pot and is now sitting on just under 60,000. Ramos, meanwhile, is still above average with about 90,000 chips.
