Big Names in Day 2

Greetings once again as we return for Day 2 of the PokerStars.com Barcelona EPT. Although there were plenty of new faces littering the opening days, a plethora of big names have survived through to Day 2. As well as former EPT winners Jason Mercier, Glen Chorny, Mark Teltscher and Arnuad Mattern, we also have recent WSOP bracelet winners Jesper Hougaard and Davidi Kitai. Of course, there's the star-studded likes of Chad Brown, Sorel Mizzi, Robert Mizrachi to add to the melting pot, but surely the biggest name here today is Wouter Wilhelmus van den Bijgaart. That's 29 letters!

Maria Maceiras Doubles Up

Tobias Reinkemeier opened for 2,200 from the cutoff, Maria Maceiras moved all in for 13,300 from the small blind and Reinkemeier made the call. Though Maceiras' {J-Clubs} {10-Clubs} was dominated by {A-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} , the board ran out {5-Clubs} {4-Hearts} {3-Hearts} {10-Hearts} {6-Diamonds}, and she doubled up with her pair of tens. She's now up to 28,000.

Bedlam Early Doors!

As so often seems to be the case on day two, the good night's sleep has instilled a refreshed vigor in the players, as the short-stacks transform their 'grind' mentality into a 'push any spot' mode and search for opportunities to make their move. The result of which is bedlam, with double ups and exits occurring on multiple tables simultaneously.

The first such encounter I spotted involved a hairy moment for Jean Amsellem as the Frenchman took on Steven Thompson with {A-Hearts}{A-Spades} versus {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}. Although dominated, Steven threatened the great escape as the board came {9-Spades}{j-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}, but it was merely a tease and Steven was gone.

"Flush draw, straight draw, every draw," said Amsellem as he wiped his brow.

"I had two of his outs," added Jesper Hougaard.

"I wished you'd told me before the board came out," replied Amsellem.

The 19th Hole

He may share the name of a Fijian golfer, but the Vijay Singh of the poker world won't be seeing any more clubs in this event having just been eliminated by Italian Danielle Mazzia. All in with {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts} versus {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}, Singh had renewed hopes on a {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{8-Spades} flop, but after a {J-Clubs} turn and {J-Hearts} river, he was left to trundle over to the 19th hole.

Good Start for Naughty

Maz 'Naughty' Nawab of Sheffield, England has enjoyed a smashing start to today's proceedings. "Yeah," he started, "I called a raise preflop with A-6 and hit an A-A-J flop. He checked, I bet and he called. On the ten turn, we both checked, but on the jack river, he checked, I bet 6,500 and he called. I didn't see what his cards were."

As a result, Nawab is now up to 80,000.

Jason Mercier Mixing It Up

Jason Mercier - Day 1a
Jason Mercier - Day 1a
EPT San Remo Champion Jason Mercier is seeing his fair share of action. The American recently got mixed up in three pots in a row. Mercier came up short on the first two pots when he had to fold after opening for a raise only to see a short stack move all in over top of him.

Not to worry, Mercier came out on top on the third hand which saw him take down a pot against Voitto Rintala when Rintala folded to Mercier's post-flop continuation bet.

Mercier broke about even on the deal and is currently sitting on just over 50,000 chips.
