Scheduling Note

Day 2 is well underway now, and the players have begun to settle into their seats. Today's levels are 75 minutes, and that's how they'll stay for the rest of the event. Tournament Director Thomas Kremser initially announced that we would play five or six levels today, depending on how play progressed.

It took just about a half hour for Kremser to realize that five levels would be enough as players are following each other out the exit door at a brisk pace. That means we'll finish up after the 1,000/2,000 level somewhere around 7pm.

Ziv Picked Off

David Jaoui raised from middle position, and it folded around to Oleksandr Ziv of the Ukraine who called from the big blind. The flop came {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{K-Spades} and both players checked. The turn brought the {3-Hearts} and a bet of 3,000 from Ziv. Jaoui counted out his stack -- about 30,000 -- then made the call.

The river brought the {10-Hearts}. Ziv quickly fired 6,000, then settled behind his large sunglasses. Jaoui fretted for a couple of minutes before finally making the call. Ziv continued to sit motionless until Jaoui repeated he had called, thus inviting Ziv to show his hand. The Ukrainian sheepishly turned over {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. Jaoui showed {A-Spades}{6-Spades} and claimed the pot.

Ziv is still quite healthy, though, with a stack of 85,000. Jaoui now sits with 45,000.

Demidov Sliding

The action for this hand isn't exactly clear as we walked up with a flop already out on board. It showed {K-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} {6-Clubs}, and there were 21,300 chips already in the middle of the table.

In front of Yulius Sepman were laid all 17,300 of his chips putting himself all in pending the decision of his lone opponent, Ivan Demidov. It would take several minutes for the Team PokerStars Pro to mull over his decision as he once or twice flashed that familiar eye roll of his. "It's like... sometimes he has eight-nine here... or king-ten..." he trailed off, talking to nobody in particular. Finally, he dropped the calling chips into the pot with a regretful look on his face.

At least he knew he was wrong. Sepman tabled {A-Spades} {A-Hearts}, and Demidov turned over {K-Hearts} {J-Hearts} with a shake of the head. The turn was a blank {9-Spades}, and the {9-Clubs} that filled out the board was a useless card as well. Sepman's overpair holds, doubling him up close to 60,000 while that slip-up drops Demidov back down to 17,000.

Thater Thwarted

Katja Thater (from Day 1b)
Katja Thater (from Day 1b)
Jason Kudron -- in the top ten in chips when Day 2 began -- had a rough first level today and found himself down to just 15,000 when he was moved to Katja Thater's table. Soon afterwards he doubled through Thater, moving back up over 30,000 and leaving Thater with just a piddling 400 chips.

Forced to go all in from the small blind, Thater found herself heads up with {10-Clubs}{4-Spades} against an opponent's {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. The first four community cards came {K-Spades}{7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{3-Clubs}, and Thater started to stand up. But the river was the {10-Spades} and she retook her seat.

On the next hand, a player in early position raised to 2,300, then Luca Falaschi reraised to 12,000 from the hijack seat. Thater looked at her cards, shrugged, and pushed her tiny stack all in. The blinds and original raiser folded, Falaschi showed {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}, and Thater {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}.

The flop came {7-Hearts}{J-Spades}{7-Clubs}, eliciting a few "oohs" from the table. The turn was the {3-Clubs}, and Thater looked comfortable remaining in her seat. But the river brought the {Q-Clubs}, stealing the hand away and eliminating the German. Falaschi now has 46,000.

Hold the Clock

We've reached the end of the first level today, and the players are taking a 15-minute break. During the down time, those pesky green T25 chips will be colored up and raced off.

Level: 9

Blinds: 500/1,000

Ante: 100

We're Back

Players are back and cards are once again in the air. A lot of exits during that first level today -- we're down to 160 now as Level 9 begins.

Demidov Deleted

Ivan Demidov - Out
Ivan Demidov - Out
After watching his stack slide in the wrong direction all day, Team PokerStars Pro Ivan Demidov has just been sent to the rail. He'll be sweating girlfriend Lika Gerasimova for the rest of the day, and she's showing no signs of struggling with her stack of 60,000+.

News from the Top of the Leaderboard

Dragan Galic (from Day 1b)
Dragan Galic (from Day 1b)
Bouncing around the room...

Mihalyo Demidenko has accumulated a few more chips, moving up to 172,000 and into the lead.

Just behind him is Viktor Ivanov. Ivanov was just in a small hand with "Miami" John Cernuto. Both checked the {7-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{10-Spades} flop. The turn brought the {4-Spades} and a bet of 2,000 from Ivanov, forcing Cernuto to fold. Ivanov has 165,000 now. Cernuto has chipped up a bit today, too, and has 69,000.

Over at Table 3, a player in the hijack limped, Alexander Rykov called from the small blind, then Dragan Galic raised to 5,500 from the big blind, prompting both opponents to fold. When tossing the cards dealerward, Galic tried to throw them face up. The {A-Clubs} was visible, while the other turned over and was scooped by the dealer before showing. The table quizzed Galic. "I show my aces and you don't see?" he asked. "We saw one," was the response. Galic grinned and offered no further explanation.

Galic has reason to smile, having built up to 158,000. Rykov, meanwhile, has struggled so far today, slipping to 74,000.

Deeb, Fitzgerald Climbing

Shaun Deeb on Day 1
Shaun Deeb on Day 1
From late position, Shaun Deeb came into the pot with a raise to 2,600, and he found action only from big blind Yaroslav Boyko, one of the native Ukrainians still remaining in the field.

Heads up then, the flop came out {2-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} {8-Clubs}, and Boyko checked. He would call a bet of 3,200 from Deeb, and he would call another 7,200 after the {7-Spades} fell on the turn. The river came the {J-Diamonds}, and after Boyko checked, Deeb quickly announced, "All in," having the covering stack. That would send his opponent deep into the tank, and the local would regretfully fold after a long pause.

Deeb flipped over his airball {3-Clubs} {6-Hearts} as he raked in the nice pot. His work today sees him moving up the board, sitting with just about 125,000 after that confrontation.

American Alex Fitzgerald is on the move as well. The young pro came into the day with just under 50,000 in his chip bag, but he's seen that stack grow three-fold over the first two hours. He's sitting on about 1480,000 now and he's decided a table massage is the perfect reward for his early climb.
