Final Table Is Go

Good morning and welcome back to the Casino San Remo for the last time this year.

1,240 players started. Eight remain. Out in front with more than a third of the chips in play right now is young Swede Jakob Carlsson, but as we've seen time and time again, a chip lead going into the final table does not necessarily translate into a trophy and a title going away from it.

Among those still in contention we have Liv Boeree, 2008 European Ladies Champion. Atanas Gueorguiev, who final-tabled the Irish Open in 2009. Russian entrepreneur Alexey Rybin, whose passion for gambling has already earned him a VIP card at this casino for services to the roulette tables. And let's not forget Mike Piper, the online qualifier who is hoping to intimidate the opposition into submission with his awesome moustache-and-aviator combo.

Either way, things should be getting underway at around the noon mark, CET - that's in half an hour or so. Don't forget that EPT Live is up and running today as well, but don't stray away from this page as we'll be bringing you all the action, direct as it happens.

Seat 1: Claudio Piceci, 39, Italy – 4,460,000

Piceci is an Italian living in Siebnen, Switzerland. He works in insurance and mainly plays poker with friends in the Swiss Poker Casino. His best live tournament result before making the final of EPT San Remo was 16th place in the €1,000 CAPT Bregenz Open in Austria in February 2010 for €1,645. This is his second EPT – he also competed at EPT Snowfest but didn’t cash.

Seat 2: Alexey Rybin, 29, Moscow, Russia - 1,890,000

Rybin has prospered with gaming businesses back home in Moscow – so much so that when one of his opponents here in San Remo offered to pay euros to see Rybin's second card, he refused saying: "I don't need money, I only need chips." Later he told another player considering a call on the river: "One for free, two for chips." This is Rybin's second EPT; he does not consider himself a tournament player, specializing mainly in very high stakes live cash games in Moscow.

Alexey is already a VIP-member of Casino SanRemo after considerable success at the roulette tables. He is known for his open, kind and cheerful personality.

Seat 3: Atanas Gueorguiev, 39, Sofia, Bulgaria – 2,520,000

Gueorguiev is a familiar figure on the EPT circuit and has already enjoyed some success including a fourth place finish at EPT Warsaw in 2008 for €87,973. In April 2009, he had the biggest cash of his career when he came fourth at the Irish Open for €163,300. He also won a WPT side event in Barcelona last June for €52,300 and cashed in the €1,000 EPT Barcelona side event in September. A former backgammon player, Gueorguiev now plays poker full time and his lifetime tournament winnings total more than $570,000.

Seat 4: Jakob "mendieta19" Carlsson, 22, Jonkoping, Sweden – PokerStars player – 13,525,000

Carlsson has been playing poker for around three years, mainly online but he’s also competed at three PokerStars Caribbean Adventure events in the Bahamas and around ten EPT events. He came 25th at EPT Prague for €12,800 and also min-cashed in London. His best result before making the EPT San Remo final was sixth place in the $5,000 side event at the 2009 PCA for $57,200.

Seat 6: Liv Boeree, 25, London, UK – 3,440,000

Boeree is a professional poker player, TV presenter and winner of the European Ladies Championships in 2008. Liv studied astrophysics in Manchester – as did fellow Brit Michael Piper – and was introduced to poker when she became one of five contestants in a reality TV show about poker. Following that experience, she studied studying poker intensely and has since notched up several tournament wins and final tables around the world, including the European Ladies Championships in May 2008. As of January 2010 she had live tournament cashes exceeding $230,000. In her spare time, Liv is a huge heavy metal fan, accomplished rock guitarist and talented table football player.

Seat 7: Toni Pettersson, 18, Helsinki, Finland – PokerStars qualifier – 5,035,000

Toni has just finished school and is currently playing poker full time. This is his first ever live event which he is attending with his father. The pair are planning to buy a car here in Italy to ensure they can get home! Toni is also considering playing next week’s EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo as well. His favourite game is Pot Limit Omaha.

Seat 8: Michael Piper, 25, London, UK - PokerStars qualifier – 4,600,000

Piper is a poker professional from London. This is his first EPT but not his first big tournament – he competed in several WSOP side events last summer as well as WSOPE side events in London last year. He failed to cash in those events but won £15,000 in a recent tourney at the International Club in London two weeks ago. He said: “Whatever happens at San Remo from now on, I’ll be delighted. I haven’t had a single bad beat, all my hands have held up and I’ve had action on most of them.”

Any Minute Now

Players are now posing in front of the feature table in a pally, Friends-trailer sort of way while cameras flash in their faces from out of the surrounding darkness, and we surmise from this that various players have finished vomiting in the bathroom and we are mere minutes away from kick-off.
