So Long, Santiago

Santia-gone
Santia-gone
We were too far from his table to know what happened, but we saw Santiago Terrazas walking toward the exit, staring at the floor and shaking his head. A quick pass by his (former) table found his chips being stacked by the player that had been to Terrazas' right. Sorry, Spain; Santiago is out.

Glo and the Goats

Around the EPT circuit, the players tend to party just as hard as (read: much, much harder than) they work at the poker table. Last night, PokerStars put on another fine welcome party just up the mountain at the Goass Hall. All of the typical sights were on hand: cocktails flowing freely, bare-breasted women dancing on tables, PokerStars logos spinning on the ceiling, goats wandering around the bar. Okay, that last one is unique to Snowfest as far as we're aware. In any event, Gloria Balding was there with a VIP pass, and she caught up with a few of the players to find out their thoughts on coming here to the Alps to play poker. Check it out:

Switch!

The dinner-eating group of players have returned to the tournament room, and they've been replaced at the buffet by those who've already played five levels. Seventy-five minutes from now, we'll all be back together again like one big well-fed family.

Matternal Instinct

We caught up with Climber Of The Day Arnaud Mattern on the turn of the {A-Diamonds} {9-Spades} {K-Spades} {A-Spades} board. The gentleman in the big blind checked and Mattern bet 1,400; Mr. Big Blind had called even before Mattern's chips were across the line.

They saw a {4-Clubs} river and Mr. Big Blind checked and quickly called another 2,650 from Mattern, and when the cards were turned over Mattern's {K-Hearts} {Q-Spades} just pipped his opponent's {K-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds} to the pot.

Mattern, who was down to just 3,000 earlier on today, is now up to a commanding 60,000 or so.

Negreanu Slides Again

The gentleman in the hijack opened for 1,100 but Daniel Negreanu on the button made it 3,000. Back to Mr. Hijack - who made it 11,000 to go.

Negreanu dwelled up for a long time before throwing his {A-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} theatrically across the table. His opponent showed him a very respectable {10-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} and took the pot.

Negreanu dips to 23,500.

Table Chatter

The action is still a bit timid in there, so we're killing time by eavesdropping on some of the table talk. Daniel Negreanu's table is particularly chatty with a few of the amateurs giving Daniel the twenty-questions routine.

The latest question came from a middle-aged gentleman in the five seat: "Do you ever take a break? Like, when you are running bad?"

Negreanu: "Nah. I've been playing a long time. I don't need to quit."

Player: "Even when you are running bad five, six, seven, eight months?"

Negreanu: "Honestly, that hasn't ever happened to me in my career. Or if it has, I've found a way to keep winning in spite of it. I feel like I'm running really bad today, but I'm still here. It's about heart for me."

Run-bad or not, Negreanu's still doing just fine over there. He's below his starting stack, but 25,000 gives him plenty of play for now.

Lose Some, Win Some

We got to Daniel Negreanu's table in the midst a hand between him and an opponent. The board read {5-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{4-Spades} and the action was on Negreanu, faced with a decision of whether or not to call 5,000.

He made the call and when the {6-Hearts} hit the river, his opponent immediately bet 10,000. Negreanu knocked over his chips Phil Hellmuth style, but with a little more cheer. He thought for a for a few moments but gave up his hand and said he folded kings, slipping to under 20,000.

The following hand, the same opponent limped under the gun and Negreanu raised to 1,200 from middle position. Action folded around to the limper and he called, bringing out a {K-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{5-Clubs} flop. The limper dark check-called 1,600 from Negreanu, and both players checked the {5-Spades} turn. The river brought the {A-Diamonds} and the opponent bet 5,000. Negreanu quickly called and saw that his {A-Spades}{K-Spades} was good, besting his opponent's {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}.

He's back up over 25,000.

The Artur They Come...

Artur Wasek
Artur Wasek
Artur Wasek, who finished fourth at EPT Berlin just recently, will not be making another deep run here in Hinterglemm.

He got his last in with {7-Spades} {10-Spades} on the turn of a {3-Clubs} {5-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {4-Spades} board, but found his opponent holding {Q-Spades} {Q-Diamonds}. No flush came on the {8-Diamonds} river, and the plucky Pole hit the rail.
