Joking Around

Spot the Joker
Spot the Joker
Strange things afoot at table 42 which features Men Nguyen, Roland de Wolfe, James Dempsey and Phil Ivey and Steve Sung. A couple of players had limped before the player in seat one revealed he had a joker in his hand but after having put money in the pot. The blinds folded and the first limper ended up revealing {2-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} face up as the players sat in confusion about what to do.

"Is this his first tournament?" laughed de Wolfe, "he's playing with the joker in his hand?"

By this time, the floor had been called while the dealer had turned the offending card down keeping it separate to the muck.

"Please can I see it?" pleaded Sung, ready to take a photo, but the dealer would not turn it over.

"Is there a hobgoblin too?" inquired de Wolfe, "I think Phil brought it!" referring to Ivey who had disappeared away from the table ahead of a gathering media presence.

Meanwhile, the floor ruled that the player in seat one could get a new card and continue the hand. De Wolfe and Dempsey protested that the deck had not been checked and might contain another joker or a "Lunkin" as De Wolfe cheekily referred to it.

The hand though was played out with a replacement card given and a non-descript board checked down between seat one and Men Nguyen in the small blind. Straight after this a new deck was brought as a replacement.

Montenegro in Monte Carlo

Oh, it's Felipe Montenegro that has 60,000.

It helps when you pick up aces against kings in the first level of the Grand Final. Montenegro and his now-extinct opponent engaged in a preflop raising war that put about 15,000 chips in the pot heading to the flop.

The dealer spread out {10-?} {8-?} {5-?}, and the player with pocket kings bet out 10,000. Montenegro shoved, and the rest of the money got in there. Montenegro's aces held, and he is the early pace setter here in Monte Carlo.

Call it 59,500.

"Nanonoko" Unloads A Clip

Randy 'Nanonoko' Lew raised preflop from early position to 250 and got called by both small blind Andrew Chen and the big blind too.

The flop came {A-Clubs} {J-Clubs} {3-Clubs} and it was checked to the raiser Lew who bet 350. Chen made the call and the big blind quickly folded allowing the hand to go heads up.

On the {K-Spades} turn, Chen checked a second time and Lew bet 1,000. Chen made the call again and the pot swelled to over 3,000.

The river {8-Diamonds} did not seem to change much and Chen checked a third time, Lew bet 2,150 and the Canadian youngster then gave up the hand pretty quickly.

Laak of the Draw

An unknown player opened for 250 and Andrew Chen called behind; Phil Laak, for some reason always an easy player to recognize no matter how far he pulls his hood over his face, also called, and they saw a flop.

Flop: {9-Clubs} {3-Spades} {3-Hearts}

The raiser bet out 625 and Chen flatted. Laak, however, made it 2,125. The original raiser called, and Chen gave it up.

Both remaining players checked the {7-Diamonds} turn but come the {6-Hearts} river Mr. Raiser bet out 3,500. Laak folded almost instantly, and dropped to 25,000.

Chidwick Up, Chidwick Back to Even

Stephen Chidwick had rather a good start, before losing an interesting small pot to put him back at his starting stack.

We caught up with him betting out 400 on an {8-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} flop and getting called by another player behind and seeing a {7-Clubs} turn. Chidwick check-called 1,000, but come the {3-Hearts} river he check-folded to a 1,500 bet from his opponent.

Seat Open!

"Table Five!"

That's the first call we've heard today, and it appears that we've just lost our first man at the EPT Grand Final. We'll try to pick our way over there and see who has 60,000 chips now.

So Who's Here?

Well, as expected, this is a very familiar-looking field.

Phil Ivey is here, sharing a table with Roland de Wolfe and Men Nguyen as well as wild card James "Flushy" Dempsey. Furthermore we have Phil Laak and his other half the lovely Jennifer Tilly, Chad Brown, Ben Kang, Dennis Phillips, Marc Naalden, Neil Channing, Greg Raymer, Alex Kravchenko... Indeed the now curtained and dark ballroom is a veritable who's who of international poker. This is going to be fun.

Technical Woes

We apologize for our technical failings over the last half hour or so. Our site is back up and running, and so is the EPT Grand Final. We've got a few posts to fill in, and then it should be business as usual from here on out.

With sincere apologies, thanks for your patience.

Welcome to the 2010 PokerStars Grand Final!

It is a beautiful day for poker in Monte Carlo
It is a beautiful day for poker in Monte Carlo
Good morning all and welcome to Le Sporting Club, the venue for the PokerStars.com EPT Grand Final. It seems like just yesterday that we were here watching Pieter de Korver take down the tournament, the title and the millions, but is in fact a whole year ago and there is a whole new field all itching to take thei shot at EPT glory.

Last year year 935 runners assortedly satellited in, won a seat via the medium of winning another EPT, or just plain coughed up the whopping €10,000 to play cards in the beautiful sun-drenched ballroom overlooking Monte Carlo Bay. We're not sure of numbers yet for this year's Big One, but one thing we can be sure of is quality. Among the players on the list for today are Team PokerStars Pros Katja Thater, Chris Moneymaker, Julian Thew and Arnaud Mattern, former Grand Final champion Gavin Griffin, EPT Berlin champ Kevin MacPhee and serial qualifier Pierre Neuville.

Dealers have taken their seats and chips have appeared at tables, and furthermore the removable roof of the tournament area has been cranked open and subsequently closed after the poker players just cowered in the shade. We were due to get this party started at noon, but clearly we are running a little late. Please stand by...
