Mattern Stacking

Arnaud Mattern
Arnaud Mattern

Arnaud Mattern called Martin Papiernik's shove to put the Slovakian at risk. Mattern was ahead with {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} to Papiernik's {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}. The door card was the {q-Spades}, but the flop was spread {q-Spades}{j-Clubs}{4-Clubs} to reveal a few outs for Papiernik. The {7-Diamonds} turn and {k-Diamonds} river were blanks, however, and Mattern picked up the knock out. He's on 200,000 now.

As tournament staff moved a player in to fill Papiernik's spot, Mattern kindly requested a weak player. "Maybe an Italian? Or a French player? Definitely a French player," joked the French pro.

Neuville Making Most of New Life

Pierre Neuville has raising chips again after his double up earlier. He opened to 10,700, and the big blind, Peter Cerven, reraised to 24,000. Neuville moved all in for a total of 83,000, and after a minute, Cerven called. Neuville instantly flipped over his cards, one stacked on top of the other, so the table could see the {a-Hearts}. He waited a beat before moving the top card to reveal the {a-Spades} under it. Cerven angrily threw down his {9-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} when he saw Neuville's hand. The board ran out an uneventful {10-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{2-Spades}{3-Hearts}{k-Spades}, and Neuville doubled up.

Rode Hard, Not Put Away Yet

Pokerstars qualifier Martin Papiernik has doubled up to a much more healthy 72,000 after he found {a-Clubs} {A-Spades} at the same time that Lorenz Roder found {A-Hearts} {9-Clubs} and was willing to give him a spin.

The {10-Spades} {8-Hearts} {6-Hearts} flop gave Roder a few outs but none managed to appear on the {K-Spades} turn or {J-Spades} river and the Slovakian survived once more.

Ready, Aim, Vaserfire!

Oleksandr Vaserfirer has doubled up through Volodymyr Pilyavsky with a nicely timed dose of binkage. Vaserfirer was behind with his {A-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} to Pilyaysky's {Q-Hearts} {Q-Spades} but a board of {2-Clubs} {10-Clubs} {5-Spades} {A-Hearts} {10-Spades} soon changed that.

Vaserfirer is up to 60,000 while Pilyaysky drops to around 170,000 which is still fairly healthy.

No Final Table for Montgomery

The shorter stacks are wasting no time getting their chips in, and one of the folks who will not be progressing any further in this tournament is Scott Montgomery, who finalled the WSOP the same year that Ivan Demidov did.

Montgomery found himself very short early on but managed to double up with pocket kings against Igor Ivashkiv's {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} - Ivashkiv hit both an ace and a ten, but Montgomery rivered a king to stay in the game.

However, just a hand or two later and Montgomery got it in again with {a-}{7-}. This time he was well behind Artem Litvinov's pocket nines, and after failing to spike, Montgomery hit the rail.

Neu Lease of Life

Pierre Neuville does the math
Pierre Neuville does the math

We found EPT Online Qualifier of the Year Pierre Neuville all in preflop with {a-Clubs}{k-Spades} against Paul Pires-Trigo's {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} - that classic coinflip.

"It's now or never," Neuville announced good-naturedly to the table.

Board: {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Hearts}

"Now I win the tournament," said Neuville as he doubled to around 80,000. "One chip, one chair."
