Day 3 Started

Day 3 Dawns; Daniel Dominates

Daniel Negreanu, yesterday
Daniel Negreanu, yesterday

Good morning and welcome back to Vienna's Kursalon where things are about to get very serious indeed.

Last night we made the money when the unfortunate Gianni Giaroni smacked his {a-}{k-} into Riekus Wijermars' pocket aces. Everyone is now guaranteed to get paid a little something, but there is a whole world of difference between an €8,000 min-cash and the €700,000 on offer for first place.

Our big chip leader as we head into the day is Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu. Negreanu was already a big stack after doubling up with aces against kings , when he rivered a set of tens to eliminate two players and lurch into the chip lead. Negreanu only increased his stack as the evening progressed, and at 893,000 is almost 200,000 chips ahead of the next man.

Also still in the running are Team PokerStars Pros Martin Hruby, Nacho Barbero and Angel Guillen, Luke "_FullFlush1_" Schwartz and 2006 EPT Grand Final winner Jeff Williams.

Play is due to get underway at noon, so go get yourself einen grossen kaffee, have a nice stroll around the Stadtpark, and join us back at the Kursalon then.

A Lot Can Happen in Five Minutes

They've hit the ground running here in the Kursalon, but some have made a beeline for the exit. Michael Schürpf's {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} lost an all-in preflop race against {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} (which he had to find out after it was done and dusted - he stood with his back to the table while all five cards were dealt including the {A-Spades}) while we're not sure what happened to Jens Weigl but he was spotted getting up from his seat and walking slowly away.

Better news for Alain Medesan supporters - the chatty Romanian, who yesterday had no fewer than three of his fellow Romanians on his table, has doubled up to over 40k. He moved in on the button when it folded round with {K-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, and big blind Charles Combes asked how much it was before making the call with {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}. The board ran out {10-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{7-Spades}{6-Diamonds} pairing Medesan's Ten and giving him a little breathing room.

"When you instacall you win this," he said. "You can't think about it!"

Medesan's previous EPT best result is 4th at Snowfest - he'll be looking to better his record at this second Austrian venue.

Kalfas Culled

Stavros Kalfas came back today as an extreme short stack with just 38,000 and wasted little time in getting it in with {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}. However, Peter Kamaras decided to give him a spin with {8-Hearts}{9-Hearts}, quickly proceeded to spike a nine on the {k-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} board, and following some very gentlemanly handshaking and the like, Kalfas hit the rail.

Morning Madness

It is all kicking off at the start of Day 3 here in the sunshine of Vienna. As we scour the tables looking for action the Dealers are giving the familiar cry of "All-in and Call". Lets recap some of those.

Firstly, over at table 9 Dominique Papesch found himself all-in against one of the chip leaders Team Pokerstars Pro Toni Judet. Papesch held the {a-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} and Judet held the {8-Clubs} {8-Spades}. Papesch doubles up though when the board runs out {q-Spades} {a-Spades} {3-Hearts} {3-Clubs} {2-Hearts} and the Austrian keeps the local flag flying when he spikes his Ace.

Then we see some 5,000 chips being thrown around on table 10. We stride over to the next table in time to see Giacomo Maisto making an under the gun raise to 15,000 and Jose Severino making the three-bet from position. Severino made it 39,000 to play and Maisto called despite being out of position. Who cares about position? The flop was Ace high {7-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {a-Clubs} and Maisto led out with a bet of 35,000 and Severino folded a pair of Kings face up. Maisto proudly showed his bluff {k-} {q-} and high fived his friend stood next to him.

"All-in and Call" shouts the Dealer from table 2 and we whizz over to find Andrey Gulyy all-in pre flop against Luke Schwartz. Gulyy has a pair of Deuces and Schwartz a pair of Kings. The flop is the {q-Hearts} {3-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {5-Diamonds} and Schwartz shouts "2" and the dealer dealt the {2-Clubs}. Gulyy survives and Schwartz loses 60,000

Vale Maria

Maria Maceiras
Maria Maceiras

Maria Maceiras has bitten the dust after moving her short stack in with {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades} in an open spot but finding the dominating {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} of Tomer Berda behind her. She was already standing up on the turn, as the {A-Clubs} had placed her in the 'drawing dead' category, and took her leave with a rueful smile.

Big Sweat for Combes

It was surely exciting for Charles Combes to pick up {A-Hearts}{A-Spades} in the big blind when big-stacked Michael Eiler had raised in the cutoff to 12k - his shove (120k total) looked suspicious enough for Eiler to call with {K-Clubs}{Q-Spades} and Combes was poised to double up.

The flop, however, was {Q-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. It's hard to imagine a worse one for the Aces in this match-up. Combes had to sweat the {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} turn and river at full fever pitch, and exhaled as the pot came over to him, saying, "My heart was pounding."
