Giovannone's Jacks

Roberto Romanello opened to 6,100 from middle position, Marat Begenov called on his direct left, and Luca Giovannone moved all in for 76,500 on Begenov's direct left.

The action folded back to Romanello, who quickly re-shoved, and Begenov folded. Romanello ripped over {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}, and Giovannone examined Romanello's hand before slowly revealing {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}.

The dealer burned one card, dealt three face down, then revealed the window card: the {k-Spades}. Slowly, she spread the flop, first revealing the {7-Spades}, giving Romanello a set of sevens, but following that was the {j-Diamonds}, giving Giovannone a set of jacks.

The turn and river bricked {5-Spades}, {8-Spades} respectively, and Giovannone doubled to around 165,000 chips. Romanello dropped down to around 175,000.

Staying Alive

The money bubble looms, which means play has tightened up. Mauchev Ibraim seems to be trying to sneak into the money, and his chances recently improved.

After dwindling down to just three big blind, Ibraim got his last 10,700 all in holding {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} and was in great shape against the {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} of Ioakim Papadopoulos. The board ran out a clean {3-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{5-Spades}, and Ibraim received a much-needed double.

"What a time to pick up aces," someone chuckled at the other end of the table.

Roberto Romanello on Day 2
Roberto Romanello on Day 2

Two of the three former EPT champions who started the day could not have more differing approaches to the game. While Lundmark is utterly silent, Romanello takes a motormouth approach. PokerStars Blog looks at the start of their days and finds contrasting fortunes.

Crazy Hand During the Break

During the break, Atanas Kavrakov and Cesar Garcia Dominguez played a very interesting hand against one another.

As the tournament clock ticked down to triple zeroes, Kavrakov opened to 6,000 from the hijack seat. Dominguez called on the button, and after the blinds released, he tabled {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}.

Apparently, the Spaniard didn't see that Kavrakov had raised, and thought that he had won the pot. A floor person was beckoned, and after the dealer told him what had happened, he ruled that the hand would be played as is.

The flop fell {a-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}, giving Dominguez a pair of aces, and Kavrakov tanked for a considerable amount of time before checking. Dominguez checked behind.

The turn was the {j-Spades}, giving Dominguez two pair, and Kavrakov checked again. Dominguez tossed out 8,000, and Kavrakov tank-called.

The river was the {2-Spades}, Kavrakov checked again, and Dominguez quickly checked behind. Kavrakov turned over {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a turned straight, and Dominguez mucked his hand.

Dominguez was then given a one-round penalty, which he will serve here at the start of Level 16.

Benvenuti Soft Bubbles

Michael Benvenuti came 14th in the most recent EPT - San Remo. There will be no second cash in a row after he fell to the burgeoning Manuel Bevand.

The Frenchman opened to 8,000 from under the gun and snap called when Benvenuti moved all in for less than 60,000 from the big blind.

Bevand: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Benvenuti: {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}

The board ran a Gallic {5-Spades}{4-Spades}{a-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{4-Clubs} to make Bevand two-pair.

Koutoupas Takes A Little From Beskrovnyy

Sotirios Koutoupas opened for 8,000 and picked up callers in start-of-the-day chip leader Iosif Beskrovnyy and Marlek Tatar in the cutoff and big blind respectively. When the flop came down {2-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}, Tatar checked, Koutoupas bet 12,000, and Beskrovnyy made a quick call.

After Tatar folded, the dealer burned and turned the {J-Diamonds}. Again Koutoupas bet, this time 21,000, and it was good enough to win the small pot as Beskrovnyy tossed his cards to the muck.

Despite losing that hand, Beskrovnyy is still off to a good start on Day 3, up more than 200K from where he started in the first level.

Klosinski Climbs, Cazals Busts, Hanowski Would Have Won!

A huge pot just took place in the center of the room that resulted in Aubin Cazals being eliminated.

A preflop raising war broke out that resulted in Cazals pushing all-in for around 100,000; Mariusz Klosinski moving all-in for over 350,000 and Martin Hanowsky sat wondering what the best course of action was.

The longer Hanowski took to decide his play, the more members of the media surrounded his table, until there were 12-15 media people watching intently. Eventually, Hanowski folded and showed pocket queens.

"That's a good fold," acknowledged Klosinski.

And it was a good fold because although Cazals could only muster {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}, Klosinski was sat their with the daddy of all Hold'em hands, {A-Spades}{A-}.

The dealer burned a card as the crowd watched on eagerly, wondering what the five community cards had in store for them. The first card out of the deck was the {Q-Diamonds}, which would have gifted Hanowski a set of queens — much to his disappointment. The queen was followed by the {7-Diamonds} and {10-Hearts}, then the {j-Clubs} and finally the {4-Hearts}.

Had Hanowski called preflop he would be sat on almost 1,000,000 chips right now, as it is he is armed with around half that amount.
