Notables Falling Fast

Most of the pros and experienced players that come to the LAPT stops rave about how soft the fields are. In general, we'd have to agree as some of the early play is questionable at best.

Still, it's not always such easy going for the top-tier players. Just in summary, take a look at the notables who've already been sent packing in the first five levels:

Gualter Salles
Jose Brenes
Juan Jose Perez
Alexandre Gomes
Pieter de Korver
Andre Akkari
Neil Channing

That's about a third of the players we recognize by sight, and they've already made their way out the door. Perhaps it's that pristine beach just down the road that's partially to blame for all of the early exits.

Lucky (or Unlucky) Chop

"stevie444"

On turned board showing {J-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {7-Diamonds} {8-Clubs}, Stephen "stevie444" Chidwick and an unknown player got it all in, Chidwick having the slightly covering stack.

When the cards were turned up, Chidwick's {A-Clubs} {J-Clubs} was in trouble but drawing live against his opponent's pocket aces. The river was a bit anti-clamactic. The {10-Diamonds} dropped off the deck to give both players the matching jack-high straight. Everyone gets their money back, keeping Chidwick planted on about 24,000 chips.

Adios, Akkari

Andre Akkari
Andre Akkari
We walked up to Andre Akkari's table to see him putting out 6,700 chips on a preflop four- or five-bet. The man in the big blind came along with the call, and it was heads up with a big pot brewing.

The flop rolled out {9-Spades} {10-Clubs} {2-Hearts}, and the big blind checked. Akkari continued out with a small bet of 4,500. His opponent asked for a count on the remainder (about 17,000) before moving all in. Akkari shrugged, nodded slowly, and made the call to put himself at risk.

Showdown
Akkari: {K-Hearts} {K-Clubs}
Big Blind: {A-Diamonds} {A-Clubs}

There wasn't much of a reaction from the Team PokerStars Pro; he seemed to know that there was a good chance his overpair was no good. The turn {5-Clubs} and river {3-Spades} failed to provide him any help, and he's been knocked off here in the fifth level of Day 1.

The hopes of Team PokerStars Brazil now lie with "Maridu" and her stack of 32,000.

De Korver De-molished

Pieter de Korver
Pieter de Korver
Pieter de Korver opened the pot with a raise, and he found two callers, including his nemesis from an earlier hand.

The flop came out {10-?} {K-?} {A-?}, and de Korver knocked the table. When one of his opponents bet 1,000, de Korver check-raised to 2,300. That raise was quickly called, and the turn brought a {Q-?}. De Korver led out now, pushing 3,000 chips across the line. His opponent was right there with the call once more.

The river paired the board with a repeat {A-?}. De Korver didn't have much left in the tank by this time, and he moved all in for less than 10,000 total. The call came instantly.

The Dutchman tabled {Q-Spades} {J-Spades}, having flopped the Broadway straight. But it was no good by the time the river rolled around. His opponent proudly flipped up {A-?} {10-?}, his full house plenty good enough to earn him the pot and send De Korver packing.

You'll get a chance to see Pieter de Korver again soon enough. He's over on this half of the world preparing to play the televised NBC Heads-Up event next month.

Maridu Looking Doubly Good

We walked past Maria "Maridu" Mayrinck's table to see her sitting with a healthy 34,000 in chips. That's twice as many chips as she had last time by, so we asked her what the deal was.

Maridu three-bet her opponent before the flop, each player putting in 2,200 chips. On a two-spade flop of {3-?} {4-?} {J-?}, Maridu bet another 2,200 on the flop, and her opponent came right along. The {A-Clubs} fell on the turn, and the rest of the chips got in there. Maridu was working with ace-king for top-top, and her opponent was drawing doubly live with {5-Spades} {6-Spades}. The river "somehow" bricked off for Maridu, securing her double up to her current stack.

"I was getting it in there whether I hit my ace or not," she told us. "Swear to god. But you don't have to write that." You should know better than that by now, Maridu!

The Shark is Circling

The Shark
The Shark
Humberto Brenes is back above the starting stack. A player in early position put in a raise to 700 and the player in the hijack seat called. Brenes was on the button and bumped it 3,700. The original raiser called and the flop came down {10-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}.

It was checked to Brenes and he bet 7,000. His opponent thought for a few moments, but gave it up, boosting Brenes' stack to 21,000.
