Habernig's Rockets Hold

Matthias Habernig has been quiet today, until recently that is. Over at his table the under the gun player raised to 2,500 and received a call from the player in Seat 2. Habernig was next to act and reraised to 9,000, which both players called. With nearly 30,000 in a three-way preflop pot, it seemed like the fireworks might fly.

Action checked to Habernig after {Q-Hearts}{7-Spades}{5-Spades} flop and he fired out 23,000. The under the gun player mucked, accidentally exposing {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}, while Seat 2 moved all-in for a total of 36,000. Habernig made the call and the two turned over their cards:

Habernig: {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}
Seat 2: {K-Spades}{J-Spades}

The {K-Diamonds} on the turn gave Seat 2 even more outs and Habernig looked a bit nervous. He breathed a deep sigh of relief however when the {8-Diamonds} fell on the river. Habernig sent his opponent to the rail and increased his stack to around 110,000.

Phillips Shows Some Skill

Action folded to Dennis Phillips on the button when he raised to 2,800. The small blind got out of the way but the big blind reraised to 10,000. Phillips made the call and the two watched the flop come {K-Spades}{3-Hearts}{J-Spades}.

The big blind checked and opened the door for Phillips to bet 12,800. The big blind looked frustrated and mucked the {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} face-up. Phillips coyly turned over {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} as he approached 60,000.

Break Time!

Players are on their first 15 minute break of the day. At this point, right around 87 players remain. A little more than half the field needs to be eliminated before we make the money.

Back in Action

Players are back in their seats to play another two levels. It's getting to be lunch time for us heathen Americans, who are used to a wide variety of options available for a quick bite on break or food delivery to the table. But in Argentina, a meal is an affair to be savored. From the looks on the wait staff's faces, we might be the first people to request take out food. So it's back to the grind with rumbling bellies for some. For others, business as usual.

No Go for Nacho

Jose Barbero

There was about 10,000 in the pot with a flop reading {2-Clubs}{A-Clubs}{K-Hearts} when Jose "Nacho" Barbero checked to his sole opponent in the cutoff, who bet 4,500. Barbero made the call and then checked the {4-Clubs} on the turn. The cutoff didn't slow down and pushed out a bet of 10,000. It was enough to push Barbero off the hand.

Barbero hasn't gotten much going today and is currently sitting with 33,000.

Eight is Enough

Now that they are under 90 players, the tournament staff is breaking one person from each to make all of the remaining ten tables eight handed before they break another one. They will play eight-handed for the rest of the tournament.

Not Habernig It

Matthias Habernig raised to 3,300 ("three-three," he said) from middle position. Angel Guillen defended his button, wishing Habernig good luck. They both quickly checked down the {k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{4-Clubs} board.

"Ace," Habernig announced.

Guillen rolled over {8-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for a pair of eights. That was good enough to best ace-high, but more importantly, it beat Habernig's actual hand. He showed {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} with a laugh. "You suck," he teased Guillen.

"Hey, I was suited," Guillen responded, collecting the small pot.

De Leòn Pounces

With about 12,000 in the pot preflop, Christian De Leòn and his opponent both checked the {K-Hearts}{9-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop. When the {K-Spades} hit the turn, De Leòn checked and his opponent bet 5,000. De Leòn immediately moved all-in for a total of 22,400 and his opponent mucked. De Leòn is now up to around 40,000.
