Rodrigues Crippled, Then Benefits from Oaquim's Non-Standard Play

Level 20 : 6,000/12,000, 1,000 ante

A strange day for Jose Carlos Rodrigues got a little stranger a few moments ago. The standard part came first, as he open-shoved his small blind for 131,000 with {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} and was called by Eduardo Costa in the big blind with {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}. Rodrigues couldn't catch, failing to improve on a board of {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{10-Spades}.

The countdown of both players' stacks revealed that Rodrigues had Costa covered by 7,000. Those chips went into the pot on the next hand after Fabio Colonese opened for 29,000. Big blind Walter Oaquim also called. Oaquim and Colonese checked the {10-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{8-Spades} flop. Oaquim fired for 34,000 on the {5-Spades} turn, inducing Colonese to fold {a-Spades}{q-Clubs} face up. Oaquim collected the 50,000-chip side pot, then showed an unimproved {k-Clubs}{3-Clubs}. Improbably, Rodrigues tabled {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}, a hand that had been behind Colonese for the main pot. Colonese was disgusted as the river came {2-} to give Rodrigues the main pot.
