Day 1b in the Books

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Rybachenko fired multiple bullets, but didn't make it to Day 2
Rybachenko fired multiple bullets, but didn't make it to Day 2

Day 1b of the Live Events International Main Event was another spectacular one. A total of 113 entries were made, pushing the prize pool well past the $200,000 guarantee the organization put on the event. Of those 113 entries, just 55 players remained after nine 45-minute levels of play.

Throughout the entire day players were able to reenter, and a lot of them made use of that possibility. As to be expected, lots of players who played and busted on Day 1a made for a second (or third, or fourth, or fifth) appearance.

Headlining the group of players taking the revolving door in expectation of better luck, were Unibet Open winner Dmitry Varlamov, one time chip leader Aleksandr Pak, and high roller Vladimir Troyanovskiy.

For Varlamov, Day 1b wouldn't be much better than Day 1a. Once again he fired more than one bullet, but once again the chips wouldn't last. Just moments before accomplished tournament director Thomas Kremser announced only four more hands to be played, Varlamov made his exit. On his last buy-in, he got it in very slim with king-seven versus ten-eight suited on a board where his opponent had both a higher pair and a flush.

Varlamov still has the chance to enter (and reenter if needed) tomorrow on Day 2. For the first four one-hour levels, players are able to buy back into the event. We'll see if Varlamov makes use of this option tomorrow.

The same goes for Aleksandr Pak, who was the chip leader on Day 1a for a while, but busted before the end of the day. He busted again today, as things didn't work out for him either.

Vladimir Troyanovskiy doesn't have to make use of the possibility to reenter. Troyanovskiy had a terrible day of poker yesterday, seeing all of his bluffs fail and all of his good hands cracked, but today was much better. The eleventh player on Russia's all-time money list (with $1,958,404 in live tournament earnings) busted players left and right today and won his fair share of pots. Most remarkable about his presence today was the fact he was playing online poker most of the second half of the day, using the green felt as his mouse pad to accompany his play on his Windows tablet.

There were also some players playing who we didn't see on Day 1a, though there weren't many. Dutch player Jorn Walthaus, who made a deep run in the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event, was one of them. He skyrocketed and was up to 85,000 before we knew it, but he ended the day with a somewhat disappointing 43,200 after not being able to make many hands the remainder of the day.

The story of the day was Sergey Rybachenko. A Russian high roller, with $1,282,921 in live tournament earnings, fired multiple bullets today to try to amass a stack. His strategy didn't pay dividends, though, and he busted just before play ended. We'll most likely see him try again tomorrow, though, so all is not lost.

Nedelcho Karakolev proved the chip leader after Day 1b with 184,200 in chips, and Mustafa Biz, with 160,400, finished right behind him in second place.

Day 2 will start Monday at 1 p.m. local time, and players will be able to enter and re-enter for the first four levels. It's just then that we'll be able to give you a prize pool for this event, but things are already well past the guarantee and looking very exciting, as there's already $374,517 to be divided by the players who cash.

Dmitry Varlamov Eliminated

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Dmitry Varlamov
Dmitry Varlamov

On {5-}{9-}{7-} (with what we believe to be two diamonds, but it might have been all diamonds) the small blind bet out 2,100 and the big blind folded. Dmitry Varlamov made the call from the hijack and the {8-Spades} popped up on the turn. The small blind now checked, and Varlamov bet out 5,000 with 15,800 behind. The small blind raised to 20,000 and Varlamov shoved all in for 800 more. The small blind made the call and the cards had to go on their backs.

Varlamov had {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and was in trouble against the small blinds' {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. The {10-Clubs} on the river didn't change that, and Varlamov made his exit.

Kings Versus Queens Versus...

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Sergey Bagirov
Sergey Bagirov

As we approached table one, the turn was already out there displaying {6-Spades}{5-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{A-Hearts}{9-Clubs}. Somehow the {3-Spades} was also out in the open, but it turned out the dealer had made a small mistake. After everyone confirmed their checking, the dealer put the {3-Spades} back in the deck, shuffled, cut, shuffled, cut, and shuffled again. There was no need for another burn card and the {9-Clubs} eventually completed the board.

Once again all three players involved checked. The small blind smashed his hand in the muck displaying some anger in the process. The button showed {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} and had a glimpse of hope on his face. That glimpse was soon gone, Sergey Bagirov tabled {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} and took it down.

Sergey Rybachenko Eliminated

Level 8 : 300/600, 100 ante
Sergey Rybachenko
Sergey Rybachenko

On an {8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} flop the small blind bet out 2,600. One player folded, but the player in the hijack, and Sergey Rybachenko in the cutoff, made the call.

The turn brought the {4-Spades} in play and the small blind checked. The hijack checked as well, and Rybachenko bet out 5,500. The smallblind now pushed all in and the hijack quickly released. Rybachenko reluctantly called.

The small blind showed the {4-Clubs} instantly, and you could see the disappointment on Rybachenko's face. The {4-Clubs} was accompanied by the {7-Spades} and Rybachenko tabled {9-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}.

The river {K-Clubs} was a blank and Rybachenko and the small blind counted their stacks. It turned out both players had exactly 31,300, and Rybachenko made his exit from the tournament area.

He didn't head to the exit of the tournament room though, so he might just take one more shot at it. Only time will tell.

Troyanovskiy Busts Another One

Level 8 : 300/600, 100 ante
Vladimir Troyanovskiy
Vladimir Troyanovskiy

Vladimir Troyanovskiy just casually raised someones 2,400 bet to 5,700 without even looking up from his tablet. The flop read {J-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and a third involved player folded. The initial better shoved all in for 16,400 and Troyanovskiy made the call.

Troyanovskiy was in the lead holding {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts} as his opponent had an unimproved {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades} to show for. The {6-Hearts} was a beautiful card for Troyanovskiy as it took away the {A-Hearts} as an out for his opponent. The {10-Diamonds} on the river was a blank and Troyanovskiy eliminated a player without even really putting any effort into it.

Rybachenko Doubles

Level 8 : 300/600, 100 ante
Sergey Rybachenko
Sergey Rybachenko

As we walked up to table 1 we saw Andrea Klasovich check from the small blind to Sergey Rybachenko in the hijack. On the table was {Q-Spades}{5-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and Rybachenko bet out 1,800. Klasovich made the call, and check called another 4,200 on the {10-Spades} turn.

The river came the {6-Spades} and Klasovich checked for a third time. Rybachenko moved all in for 9,600 and Klasovich made the call. Rybachenko tabled {J-Spades}{9-Spades} for the backdoor flush, and Klasovich open mucked his {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}.

Gueorguiev Doubles Through Rybachenko

Level 7 : 250/500, 75 ante
Ace King no good for Rybachenko
Ace King no good for Rybachenko

The player under the gun limped in for 500, and under the gun plus one we saw Sergey Rybachenko raise it up to 1,700. His neighbor made the call for 1,700, but Atanas Gueorguiev right next to him had bigger plans. Gueorguiev shoved all in for 8,400 total and all players folded to Rybachenko. Rybachenko raised almost all in, leaving himself just 225 behind. The caller folded, and Rybachenko and Guerguiev opened their cards.

Sergey Rybachenko: {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}
Atanas Gueorguiev: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

The board stayed free of aces and other problems for Gueorguiev: {2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}. Sergey Rybachenko still has about 23,000 left,
Atanas Gueorguiev plays 20,350.

Troyanovskiy Bluffs All In

Level 5 : 150/300, 50 ante
Vladimir Troyanovskiy
Vladimir Troyanovskiy

We arrived on a {Q-Hearts}{6-Spades}{K-Spades} flop and Troyanovskiy just called a big raise to 4,700 from Maurizio Musso. Troyanovskiy had just 7,150 behind and pushed those chips all in without any doubt once the {A-Hearts} hit the turn.

Maurizio Musso, a well known Italian player with a lot of cashes on his curriculum vitae, thought about it for some time. "It's just seven thousand" said Troyanovskiy with a smile. Eventually he folded. Troyanovskiy smiled again, and threw {10-Spades}{8-Spades} on the table.

Chop It Up!

Level 5 : 150/300, 50 ante
Jorn Walthaus
Jorn Walthaus

The German player in the cutoff opened before the flop, and Jorn Walthaus in the big blind was the sole caller.

The flop came {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and Walthaus checked to his opponent. The German player made a continuation bet and Walthaus raised to 1,500. Walthaus' opponent raised to 3,600 and Walthaus three bet to 8,500. The call followed and the dealer got busy dealing a turn: {10-Diamonds}.

Walthaus pushed 30,000 worth of 5,000 chips forward. His opponent had to make the decision for his tournament life as he only had 22,250 left. After about a minute or so he made the call.

Walthaus proudly showed his {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}, but would soon find out he was about to chop the pot. His opponent had {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} and the river {Q-Spades} was of no importance.
