Day 2 Coming Up

Negreanu sits with an above-average stack coming into Day 2
Negreanu sits with an above-average stack coming into Day 2
Welcome back for Day 2 of the PokerStars.net NAPT Venetian. Yesterday, the event took the Venetian by storm with 872 players packing the room and taking to the felt. When the day was all said and done, 475 of them remained.

Topping the leaderboard is Andy "BKiCe" Seth with 245,600 in chips. Phillips Collins, Mark Ketteringham and Team PokerStars Pro Chris Moneymaker round out the list of names who bagged up over 200,000 chips. The average stack going into Day 2 is just over 55,000 chips.

Other members of Team PokerStars Pro joining Moneymaker on Day 2 are Barry Greenstein (40,700), Jason Mercier (41,000), Bill Chen (43,100), Tom McEvoy (50,900), Joe Cada (67,000), Daniel Negreanu (76,500), Victor Ramdin (16,900), Greg Raymer (144,100), Joe Hachem (35,600), Vanessa Rousso (144,900) and Dennis Phillips (16,400). Friend of PokerStars Orel Hershiser bagged up 84,000 chips and is also still in the mix.

The remaining players will kick off play at 12:00 p.m. local time here in Las Vegas. The schedule says we're going to be plying down to 54 players or finishing six levels, whichever comes first. It doesn't look like we're going to get anywhere near 54 players, so it looks like after six levels we'll be done.

Hamilton Doubles Up

The reigning Ladies' Event champion from the WSOP is Lisa Hamilton and she just doubled up to about 50,000 after her pocket kings went up against an opponent's pocket eights. The money went in preflop and after a board of {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}{2-Clubs}{3-Spades}{9-Diamonds}, Hamilton earned the win.

Baker Looks for Better Spot

With a full night of sleep (presumably) under their belts, the players have come ready to mix things up. Sorel Mizzi and Amanda Baker were involved in an early pot on one of the far outer tables. With 9,800 chips in the pot, they took a ragged flop of {3-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {5-Hearts}. Mizzi had to act first and opted to lead for 4,500. Baker thought things over before calling.

Baker's call didn't scare Mizzi out of betting 12,000 on the {4-Hearts} turn. Either he was extremely strong or he thought Baker was weak. Either way his bet got a positive result: Baker folded her hand.

Mercier Avoids a Trap

Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier is fearless and aggressive, but that doesn't mean he doesn't run into solid hands once in a while -- or even two at the same time.

After an early-position player limped into the pot, Mercier raised to 3,900. He was called by a late-position player and the early-position player for a three-way flop of {10-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {8-Diamonds}. Mercier must have sensed something was amiss; when action passed to him he checked. His two opponents wound up all in, one with {J-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} and the other with a set of tens, {10-Diamonds} {10-Clubs}. By that point, however, Mercier had already wisely folded his hand.

Ramdin Gets Unlucky

In the first thirty minutes we've already lost several notable players. Dennis Phillips is out; he was followed shortly thereafter by a very unlucky Victor Ramdin. Ramdin moved all in for 7,000 on a flop of {6-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {J-Clubs}. His lone opponent called with {7-Clubs} {7-Spades}, a hand far behind Ramdin's {K-Hearts} {K-Spades}.

Ramdin didn't say a word when the {7-Diamonds} fell on the turn to give his opponent a set. He just shrugged and left the table when the river was no help, {Q-Clubs}. He's out.

Lawson Adding Some Chips

Ted Lawson
Ted Lawson
The cutoff set raised to 2,500 and then the button reraised to 8,000. Ted Lawson moved all in over the top from the small blind and then the cutoff folded. The button went into a painful tank. By painful, we mean that he was grimacing on the face and it looked like he was giving birth in his seat. Eventually, he asked Lawson if he would show and Lawson nodded yes. The player tanked a little more in pain and then folded {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} face up. Lawson showed two queens and added the chips to his stack.

Mercier and Wachtel Blind vs. Blind

Jason Mercier raised from the small blind to 2,600 after action folded around to him. Nate "njw11" Wachtel was in the big blind and made the call.

The flop came down {A-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and both players checked to see the {J-Diamonds} fall on the turn. Mercier fired 1,900 and Wachtel called.

The river completed the board with the {3-Diamonds}, pairing it with threes. Mercier fired 7,100 and Wachtel folded.

Mercier moved to 45,000 after this hand and Wachtel dropped to 68,000.
