Break Dance

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

We've hit the midway point of the day -- three levels down, three to go. The players are headed out for another ten-minute break, but we'll be back soon!

Level: 12

Blinds: 1,000/2,000

Ante: 200

Mattern Mystified

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

A player in early position opened with a raise to 4,800 before Arnaud Mattern three-bet shoved for about 37,000 total. Next door, Cynthia May was working with her own short stack, and she tanked for a while before calling all in for 15,000 even. The initial raiser folded, and May said, "Well, goodbye everyone," as she stood from her chair.

Showdown
Mattern: {Q-Spades} {9-Spades}
May: The ol' {3-Clubs} {4-Clubs}

Mattern was puzzled, and you probably know the rest of the story. May flopped a pair, and the board ran out {8-Spades} {2-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} {K-Spades} to secure her double up. A mystified Mattern counted out his debt and slid it to his neighbor without a word, dropping down to 22,000.

"When you're short-stacked, you gotta make a move sometime," May said. "That's pot odds."

Fitzgerald Doubles Through Ramdin

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

From early position, Victor Ramdin raised to 4,500. Action folded all the way around to Alex Fitzgerald on the button and he moved all of his chips into the middle. Everyone folded back to Ramdin and he called the all-in bet that was worth 15,100 total.

Ramdin: {A-Spades}{J-Hearts}
Fitzgerald: {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}

The flop came down {J-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} and Ramdin added a pair of jacks. Fitzgerald still held two overcards to the board and an open-ended straight draw. As he started to stand up from his chair, Fitzgerald said to Ramdin, "I hope you make two pair."

After the {6-Clubs} fell on the turn to give Fitzgerald more outs to a flush, the {A-Diamonds} hit the board on the river and he made his straight while Ramdin made an unwanted two pair. Ramdin sent the chips over, but it wasn't a big loss as he's still on 440,000 in chips.

Kings for Wheeler

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

An under-the-gun player raised to 4,500 and received a call from the player on the button. Action was then on Jason Wheeler in the small blind and he three-bet to 14,700. The UTG player did not take kindly to the gesture and promptly four-bet to 25,000. Wheeler responded by moving all in and put the UTG, who had about 53,000 back, to the ultimate test. After a solid two minutes, the UTG player made the call:

UTG: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Wheeler: {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}

The board ran out clean for Wheeler when it came {9-Hearts}{7-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{A-Diamonds} and he eliminated his foe. He is now up to 220,000.

Win One, Lose One for DeMaci

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante
Chris DeMaci
Chris DeMaci

After George Lind raised to 4,500 from middle position, big stack Chris DeMaci reraised from the small blind to 12,300. Lind folded and DeMaci won the pot.

On the next hand, DeMaci raised from the button to 4,500. The big blind three-bet to 14,500 and DeMaci folded.

Moral of the story? DeMaci picked up 3,800 over those two hands.

Cheong Crippled

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

We missed the action, but we just caught the tail end of the hand as Joseph Cheong was sending more than 60,000 of his chips over to an opponent. The board showed {10-Spades} {2-Spades} {Q-Spades} {4-Hearts} {A-Spades}, and we found out that Cheong had flopped top set with pocket queens. His opponents' {K-Spades} {J-Diamonds} ran down a flush by the river though, leaving Cheong with just about 12,000 chips with which to mount a comeback.

Hachem Shoves It, Sees What Happens

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

The table folded around to the blinds, and Joe Hachem moved all in for 43,200 from the small. The player in the big asked for a count, then called as he was able to get a better eyeball on the stack. Hachem was working with {K-Spades} {8-Spades}, and he asked the dealer for some spades as he saw his opponent table {A-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds}.

"Well, that's not spades," Hachem astutely noted as the dealer ran a suited {5-Hearts} {10-Hearts} {9-Hearts} flop. The turn {7-Spades} opened the door for Hachem, however, and the river {J-Spades} was a good card indeed. Runner-runner goes Hachem to make his straight, doubling up to 88,200.

"That's how you do it," Hachem concluded as he stacked up. "Shove it and see what happens."

Words to live by.
