Massive Pot Alert

With at least 50,000 in the pot by the river of the {5-Hearts} {9-Spades} {Q-Clubs} {3-Hearts} {10-Spades} board, William Kassouf dwelled up for a very long time from early position. He finally bet out around 17,000. The bet was large enough to cover Lise Vigezzi, his opponent, and so it was Vigezzi's turn to dwell.

Approximately one ice age later (or so it seemed to the casual observer), Vigezzi folded, consolidating Kassouf's enormous stack.

Think Outside the Cube

Rumit "The Cube" Somaiya raised to 2,500 from the hijack, only for Breandan Reaney to make it 10,500 from the big blind. Somaiya thought about it for a while. "I'm beginning to not like you," he sighed in a resigned fashion. After another moment's pause, he passed.

Febers Charges Levi

Nicolas Levi had been enjoying the start of his Day 2, gradually but mercilessly accumulating chips, with several small pots taken without showdown. However, his gains from the day were just sent to short stack Paul Febers, who moved in preflop with {A-Clubs} {J-Diamonds}. Levi, who had initially raised, called immediately with {9-Spades} {9-Hearts}.

The flop paired Febers twice, {A-Hearts} {J-Clubs} {3-Clubs}, leaving only a small window for Levi to eliminate him, which failed to open.

Where There's a Williams, There's a Way

Derek Williams is now sorting a lake of 70,000+ chips into neat stacks after eliminating Karl Mahnkle. The dealer was asking for more players to fill the spaces (they've gone from ten-handed to nine-handed tables today), while the short stacks at the table eyed the new chip towers nervously.

Davey Jones Sunk

Dave 'LeKnave' Jones has been eliminated by Tom Hanlon. Having grown his stack of 100 chips to what looked like 20,000 or so, he raised preflop to 3,800 after Paul Zimbler limped in for 1,000. Action passed to Tom Hanlon on the button, who moved all-in for 21,000.

Zimbler started furiously writing in a small black notebook after passing. This left the decision back to Jones, who eventually called with {J-Clubs} {J-Diamonds}. Hanlon, who had Jones covered, flipped {A-Clubs} {A-Spades}, which held up.

"Cold," was all Jones said on his way out.

Three Double Ups

Eddie Cavanagh enjoyed a bit of luck when his pocket jacks became good against a hapless Emmett Davis' aces, thanks to a third jack on the turn. Davis is now woefully short on roughly 10,000.

-----------

Gregory Hunt held {9-Spades} {9-Hearts} and found himself looking good against Risto Polojarvi's {A-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds}. Two diamonds came out on the flop, one of them a nine to give Hunt a set, but no more came out on the turn or river, doubling up Hunt.

-----------

Frank Dunleavy enjoyed a double up to 20,000. His dejected opponent Michael Purcell was down to just six big blinds after the hand.

Dunleavy: {K-Clubs} {J-Clubs}
Purcell: {A-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds}

Board: {7-Clubs} {5-Hearts} {5-Clubs} {J-Spades} {9-Hearts}

Finn Scythes Through Sea of Opponents

Finnish player Mathias Knaapinen has doubled an already impressive stack in the second level. He now sits on over 150,000 as the clock ticks down into the first break. No doubt he's now usurped the chip lead and looks very confident. His tablemate said, "Don't bother blogging us short stacks, just watch him!"

Others doing pretty well for themselves are:

Andrew Pantling - 100,000
Lee Brooke-Pearce - 94,000
Roar Wang - 70,000
Martin Lynch - 86,000
William Kassouf - 80,000
Julian Thew - 78,000
Charlie Ciresi - 70,000
Dave Penly - 60,000
Tony Cascarino - 56,000
Jon Kalmar - 41,000

Last Year's Champion Hits the Rail

No crown this year
No crown this year
Neil Channing, 2008 winner of this event, has busted after running {A-?} {K-?} into {Q-?} {Q-?} in an all-in preflop race. There was no spike of the overcards and a disappointed Channing is forced to pass on his Irish Open title. Having nursed a short stack which dropped to 6,000 today, he made a good go at getting back in the running. He finished just outside of the top 200 players.
