Wow. Team Australia, represented by co-captain Tony G, is going crazy on Outer Table 2. "Yeah baby! Yes!" said the G, bouncing out of his chair. He started slapping high fives. But apparently he chopped the pot with Team USA.
"I don't even care!" said the G. "I'm just happy I won. I'm happy I made the nuts!" So is all of Australia -- their hopes are still alive.
I wish I could tell you what just happened on Outer Table 2. On the last hand of Pot-Limit Omaha, Team USA was all in against Team Brazil. We didn't catch the cards or the board, but Team Brazil was crowded around their man, Leandro "Brasa" Pimentel, for the river. They shouted triumphantly when it hit, with Pimentel thrusting a fist in the air and shouting, "BRAZIL!" Team USA, represented by Howard Lederer, shook hands with Team Brazil and retired to the rail.
The elimination of Team USA from Outer Table 2 brought that table down to just two teams: Brazil and, improbably, Australia! Australia is through to the final table after 4/5 of the team was eliminated in early play.
Team England's hopes of a final table run have been vanquished. Ben Roberts, playing the last surviving Team England stack, was just eliminated at the hands of Johnny Chan.
Chan, holding king-three, hit two pair on the flop of . Ben Roberts who held was drawing dead by the turn and Team England was eliminated from the competition.
The elimination of Team England from the feature table means that Team China and Team Vietnam will both advance to the final table, where they will join Team Australia and Team Brazil. Three other first-round tables are still playing.
A fifth seat at the final table has just been determined. On the back table, Outer Table 4, Team Greece and Team China were the last two teams standing. Team Greece puts its first stack at the final table, while Team China will now start with a double stack.
There are still two tables in action. At the outer table, Team China and Team Greece are battling with Team Brazil, each trying to add to their final-table chip stack. At the feature table, the last Team USA stack is being played by Phil Hellmuth. He's against Team Vietnam's Men Nguyen and Team Greece's Georgios Kapalas. It's do or die time for Team USA.
Outer Table 3 is over. The short-stacked Team Brazil moved all in pre-flop with . Team China called with . That ace was enough to take down the pot after both teams whiffed on the board.
Team China will now start with a triple stack at the final table, having put three players through. Team Greece will have a double stack.
One match remains. The fate of Team USA rests in Phil Hellmuth's hands.
Substitution time for Team USA in the last match. With Team USA riding the short stack, Chris Ferguson has taken over for Phil Hellmuth. He's battling the team captain for Vietnam, Men Nguyen, and one of the Team Greece co-captains, Stavros Kalfas.
All three of the Teams on the last table have susbtituted players again. Howard Lederer is playing Team USA's stack; Greece is represented by co-captain George Theofanopoulos; and even Team Vietnam has taken a very tired-looking Men Nguyen of the table.
The last stand of the United States was made by Jen Harman. She got the USA's stack in with after flopping two pair, . Team Vietnam had a flush draw, which promptly filled when the turn fell . That left Team USA looking for a river four-outer to stave off elimination. It didn't come. The river was the , ending the USA's hopes of putting anyone at the final table. Vietnam and Greece will each add to their final-table chip stacks.
The tournament is (again) on a break. This one is supposed to be fifteen minutes and will allow the tournament staff to set up the final table. Five countries will be reprsented:
China
Greece
Vietnam
Brazil
Australia
We'll try to get the exact chip counts when they're available.
