Lim Flies Straight

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante

Former Day 1C chip leader Yah Loon Lim was getting short so when Zhu Qi raised his big blind he decided to take a gamble and moved all-in with Qi calling instantly – usually never a good sign if you have just shoved…

Lim, holding the speculative {5-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} would need some help against Qi’s {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades} and picked up a gutshot draw when the flop fell {k-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}.

While the {2-Clubs} turn was a blank the {7-Spades} river sure wasn’t and the rest of the table burst into hysterical laughter.

“What?” asked Lim, “I have like, 2 big blinds left there if I fold…”

So there you have it, folks, sometimes taking a gamble pays off. Lim climbed to 200,000 while Qi took the hit good-naturedly and dropped to 500,000.

Soyza Takes From Cheong

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante

We caught the tail end of an interesting hand the recently played out between Sam Cheong (cutoff) and Michael Soyza (button), picking up the action on the turn with over 500,000 in blinds, antes and bets in the pot.

With the board reading {q-Spades}{a-Hearts}{7-Clubs} the {4-Hearts} had just hit the turn and Cheong had fired out a bet of 60,000, leaving himself 100,000 behind. Soyza thought it over for a few seconds before sliding out the call and it was off to the river.

The dealer peeled off the {8-Diamonds} and Cheong now checked the action over to Soyza. The Malaysian player did not take long to pull the trigger, moving all-in for over 350,000 and Cheong folded instantly, to disbelieving gasps from the rest of the table. Of course, if he was bluffing there then there was no way Cheong could call, so it’s not really all that crazy…

Zhi Busts Cheong

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante

Sam Cheong’s Main Event is now over and he has become our most recent casualty. Down to his last 100,000 in chips Cheong moved all-in from under-the-gun with ace-queen and big blind Lin Zhi woke up with pocket fives and made the call. Cheong failed to pair either his ace or his queen and that shrinks the field down to 33.

Farrington Folds Out Weiyi

Level 21 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Denmark's Frederik Farrington
Denmark's Frederik Farrington

Denmark’s Frederik Farrington is holding on to his tournament life with a firm grip and has just emerged triumphant in a battle of the blinds against tablemate Zhang Weiyi.

We picked up the action on the turn with the community cards spread {a-Clubs}{8-Spades}{10-Clubs} {8-Clubs} just as Farrington fired for 40,000 into the 80,000 pot. Weiyi thought long and hard about his decision and did not seem to find Farrington all that believable apparently as he made the call to grow the pot to 160,000.

The {4-Spades} river saw Farrington think things over for a minute or so before reaching for chips and the Danish player bet big, leading out for 135,000 leaving himself just 60,000 behind.

That looks pretty believable to us and Weiyi evidently thought so too as he grudgingly folded, leaving Farrington to scoop the pot without showdown and he climbed to around 375,000 while Weiyi dropped to 400,000.

Wang Pressures Qi

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Zhu Qi
Zhu Qi

Zhu Qi kick-started the action with a raise to 27,000 from the hi-jack with the UK’s Simon Burns making the call from the button before Jun Wang fired out a tickly little re-raise to 56,000.

The action was back on Qi and he thought long and hard about his decision, tanking for a good 2-3 minutes before deciding to raise again, making it 136,000 in total.

Burns quickly folded and the action was back on Wang, who gestured at Qi to lift his arms so he could get a gander at his remaining chips – Qi had 450,000 behind. Seemingly satisfied that he had Qi covered Wang made the standard Macau all-in triangle motion with his hands and shoved for 550,000.

This sent Qi deep into the think tank, where he remained for a good five minutes as level 21 ticked over into level 22. It was a big decision for his tournament life so Qi was given some leeway by the rest of the table, who waited patiently for the Chinese player to make his decision.

Eventually, Qi chose to wait for a better spot and slid his hand face down into the muck and Wang won 170,000 without showdown.

Chan Departs in 28th Place to Set Up Redraw

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Justin Chan finishes in 28th place
Justin Chan finishes in 28th place

Hong Kong’s Justin Chan has just narrowly missed out on the money ladder, departing in 28th place for HK$43,000. All remaining 27 players are now guaranteed at least HK$49,000.

It was chip leader Anson Tsang who was applying the pressure pre-flop with a raise to 35,000 from the cutoff. Chan, sitting on the button, looked down at his hole cards and moved all-in for 103,000 in total and action folded to Weizhou Zha in the big blind.

Zha glanced over at Tsang, who easily had him covered, and decided to flat call. Tsang gave a little chuckle and threw in the extras and the flop fell {10-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. Both Zha and Tsang checked the whole way with the turn and river running out {2-Spades} and {4-Diamonds} respectively.

Chan turned over {a-Diamonds}{7-Spades} but could not beat Zha’s {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}, Tsang mucked and we lose another. Play has paused for a redraw now we are down to three tables.

Six Depart

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante

We have just lost six players in quick succession with Zhang Tianchun and Australia’s John Chi just two of those who have recently departed. Fortunately, we managed to catch Chu’s exit hand.

It was not long after the redraw and action folded around to Chu in the small blind. With only 150,000 left Chu moved all of this into the middle pre-flop with big blind Lin Zhi making the call and the cards were turned over.

John Chu: {j-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}
Lin Zhi: {q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

Unfortunately for Chu, the board ran out {k-Spades}{j-Spades}{4-Hearts} {a-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} and he headed for the rail while Zhi stacked up to 590,000.
